Veronica (2017)

A boilerplate ouija board horror film that is elevated by interesting characters (and probably excellent direction, but I never notice that stuff). Also pretty creepy. The ending looked like it would be awesome, then disappointing, before kinda splitting the middle.

7.2 out of 8 balls.

You’d think at this point Ouija boards would have a warning label on the back. 😉

This was my first David Lynch movie and I hope to god that the rest are a little easier to follow.

Lynch’s style shines most brilliantly in works like Eraserhead and Lost Highway, but if you’re not used to surrealist, non-linear filmmaking, here are his most accessible films:

  • The Straight Story
  • The Elephant Man
  • Blue Velvet
  • Wild at Heart

For the love of all that is sacred and holy, never watch Inland Empire.

Netflix.

Curious if that’s a “where can I watch it” question or a “what the fuck are you watching” question.

And it’s the same guy that directed the first few REC movies, which are far and away the best zombie movies I’ve ever seen.

Most definitely the latter.

Um, okay?

What’s the issue with a horror film from the guy who did REC?

Well I haven’t seen it, but anyway at least in this case there’s some reason (when I asked the question I had never heard of it before). Usually your picks seem like you found a random movie choice button on Netflix.

I’ve noticed that Frink seems to watch a lot of random movies I’ve never heard of. I think that’s great.

That is my desired goal as a movie watcher. I am still trying to slowly sift through all the classic works of major directors. I don’t know why but being the guy in the room who can non nonchalantly recommend some niche films sounds too cool to not want.

Unless I’m the only person in the room, I don’t want to be there at all.

I’ve only seen Dune. It sucked, but I appreciated some of the style, so it didn’t ruin Lynch for me or anything.

Dune fails as a David Lynch movie and as an adaptation of the novel. It’s almost impressive.

Don’t let that put you off reading the book, or (assuming it’s good) seeing Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming adaptation when it materializes.

It’s long overdue for Peter Jackson-style big update.

Denis Villeneuve (director of Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario, etc.) is making the remake. Word is it’ll be two movies. I can’t wait!

I think you need a minimum of three four-hour length films to do Dune justice, but we’ll see.

I wonder if six two-hour films work then, or would that require such radically different pacing and structure than appropriate for Dune that it would not work?

The book consists of three sections. I see no reason to divide the sections.

I honestly think the first book can be done in a single 3-and-a-half-hour film, but I won’t complain about two 2-and-a-half-hour films.
