I like it too ! Perhaps it deserves to be a little less contrasty though.

Interesting! The dramatic contrast/exposure change is a little brutal but it looks like totally new (and life-like) lighting or as if you’ve properly opened your eyes in some shots. Especially the Geonosian balcony, the fireplace scene and Dooku’s lightning.

Wow. That’s a huge improvement. The younglings shot is gorgeous.

I would add that I too find the look a little dark for my tastes - the colours seem a bit “dirty” to me - but kudos all the same.

I think the changes help some things pop, but there’s a lot of lost detail in there.

There’s also some over-exposure in a couple of the scenes because of the altercations, specifically the ‘sand’ scene.

The biggest issue with the OT BDs (outside the obvious altercations) were the crushed blacks and loss of fine detail as a result, I fear a similar case here. I do quite a bit of professional editing and that’s just my opinion, but I think you could achieve the same ‘look’ you’re going for without abusing the contrast and exposure quite so much.

I hope I don’t come off as overly negative or snarky, just giving my opinion!

You did a good job color correcting things to your apparent liking, I’m just commenting on some more technical details (:

PRAISE VEXED! THE MESSIAH HAS COME!

In all seriousness, these all look better than the Blu Ray, but in each comparison I couldn’t help but prefer the DVDs on each one. The change is a little dramatic, and should probably be toned down, but you’re definitely on the right track for sure.

Those look really nice! The extra brightness makes everything really pop. It looks like the shadows are rather crushed though, and some gradients have shifted too green. But overall it’s a big improvement.

I’ve taken all critiques into account and matched the contrast better to what’s present on the discs. I’ve been attempting exports of the film with a few failed outputs, but at the moment I am waiting on a 4TB drive to arrive in the mail because I’m all out of space. (Who knew you could fill lots of TeraBytes just by being a part of these forums:P) When I get it exported I’ll upload it to the Spleen and start a new thread to avoid confusion in this one.

From there you can watch it and provide further input if you’d like, and I’ve already made note of some issues like ghosting from moving objects, but this correction is merely a single grade over the entire film so that I can watch it and not cringe. In the future I expect to do entire scene by scene corrections but for now this is good enough for me.

can these 35mm trailers be used as reference?

These are great sources, and I’ve had them bookmarked since they were posted. I might inquire about the source file from Rob, instead of settling for a YouTube compression, as they will be great for a scene by scene correction in the future! My current single-grade correction is not based on any sources–just an intuitive “repainting” of the colors built on some custom film looks.

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Rendering an opening preview of my single pass color grade of ROTS. I based it roughly on those 35mm trailers posted above but brighter and a little bit more fitting with the looks of TFA and TLJ.

I’ll post a copy on youtube and provide a higher quality download in x265 4k.

Rendering is at 90% so clip should be up sometime tonight, or tomorrow morning.

My color grade ended up doing:
-a 4K upsample (4096x1740 via the Instant 4K plugin)
-a rec709 to slog3 conversion (common sony curves which the PT was shot on, well actually it was shot at slog2 I believe but I prefer slog3)
-a slog3 to kodak 5219 cineon emulation (TFA and TLJ were shot on this stock)
-curves adjusments (to brighten up image)
-a cineon to Kodak 2283 print emulation (modern theatrical film prints are printed on this stock)
-levels adjustments (to get pure black and pure white levels)
-white balance (to remove greenish/yellow tint from film emulations)
-a Hue-Saturation-luminance curves adjustments (primarily to make teal colors appear more grey)
-and finally real 4K scans of Kodak 5219 grain overlayed on top

This isn’t the most thorough grade I’ve done, but I think it looks good. I’m debating about darkening/adding more contrast back to make it match the theatrical 35mm prints as shown in the trailers above, as well as adjusting the emulation and conversion curves for more accuracy. I thought I’d release it as it is and get feedback first. I’ll render out a high bitrate x265 4K version once I make some more refinements.

Essentially I wanna release a single pass color grade for each prequel that gives it a filmic look but retains most of the original intentions in color timing. After releasing those, I will begin work on shot-by-shot more radical color regrades that will feature more aesthetic changes some of which I’ve previewed in images I’ve posted before.

I feel good about again sharing what I’ve been working on. The haituses were necessary because of some crazy things going on in my life over the last few years, but I’m glad to be back for a bit.

To note though I will be going on a 2 month vacation starting next month so I will be gone then, but I’m happy to squeeze in some updates and previews before then.

Sorry nitpicking, but I don’t believe they had slog2 on any Sony cameras back in 2005.

Hmm, yeah I think you’re right. For some reason I thought I remember reading about them in a detailed article that was written about the cinematography behind AOTC and ROTS. Must have been different log curves than slog2.

Either way it doesn’t really matter since it’s not like I’m working with the original source files and I’m just converting back the already graded footage.

Part of the reason I convert to slog3 beyond that the films were shot on Sony cameras, is that I myself use Sony cameras in my video projects and am more familiar with color grading in that space.

Also I forgot to mention that I do still plan to do an HDR10 grade for each of the prequels, but I have yet to purchase the proper monitoring equipment for it so that’ll definitely be the last of the color grades to be completed.
