DESTROY ALL JEDI: The unfinished Tarantino-inspired prequel edit

Author

A few weeks ago I watched Darth Lunar’s The Blackened Mantle and it changed the way I look at fan-editing. Not only was it emotionally engaging, it actually made me feel emotions other than boredom!

This was entirely due to the superb Japanese voice acting and the brilliant dialogue changes. This got me thinking, “Why don’t I make my own version of this?”

And so DESTROY ALL JEDI was born!

////////

My list of changes:

Non-linear story structure
This is done both to pay homage to the films of Quentin Tarantino and to provide better flow and emotion to the story. For example: the first scene in the edit is Anakin’s immolation. This sets the tone that this film is a tragedy.

No John Williams score
This is also done in order to achieve a Tarantino-esque feel. I have made sure to match the song to the tone of the scene.

Re-written dialogue
This is done for obvious reasons.

Maybe:

No spoilers!
Vader won’t be named and the suit won’t appear in this movie. Leia won’t be mentioned either.

Soundtrack:

Way To Fall - Starsailor
New Beginning, Part 1 - L.A. Noire OST

Blue Monday - New Order
Man with Harmonica - Ennio Morricone
Jungle Boogie - Kool And The Gang
Little Darlin’ - The Diamonds
The Braying Mule - Ennio Morricone
Norme Con Ironie - Ennio Morricone
Lonesome Town - Ricky Nelson

I want as much criticism as possible! Please tear apart my new dialogue!

This edit will be relatively quick to put together, I just want to slow down and take my time with the dialogue.

You liked the preview? My main goal with it is to make Anakin and Obi-Wan seem like genuine friends, did it work?

Also, thanks for all of the name suggestions. I don’t know which one to pick, so we’ll see.

Thoroughly enjoyed the new preview, and yeah, the new dialogue all worked wonderfully for me. Shame it would be next to impossible to dub it that way in a convincing manner…

^ I concur… (Master Kenobi should go)

Wow, the beginning is just amazing. Surpassed my expectations by miles!

How soon is this gonna come out?

The dialogue is better than the actual prequels. Nice work.

I’m not sure. The actual editing process will be relatively quick. What I’m doing is editing the movie first, adding in music and removing it etc., and then afterwards I will actually write the subtitles. While I’m editing I have an idea in my head about the purpose of each scene and what the characters will be talking about, but the actual writing will be done near the end.

That’s the easy part 😛

JEDIT: Does anybody have any suggestions for the bar scene’s music? I want to have the music be diegetic (actually playing in the world). Keep in mind that I don’t want too many songs in this to just be from Tarantino’s movies.

I feel like this movie needs a purpose in the grander Star Wars saga. In a hypothetical universe where this edit was the prequel trilogy we got, what kind of twist could happen that would re-contextualize the Original Trilogy? Some great truth that would be revealed that would make you watch the originals in a new and exciting way?

Perhaps Anakin’s turn is entirely Obi-Wan’s fault, even if he didn’t mean it? Maybe Anakin was doing fine and then Obi-Wan recommended that he talk to Palpatine about something, introducing both of the characters. Palpatine senses potential - maybe his decades long scheme can finally come to fruition with Anakin as his enforcer.

When Obi-Wan confronts Anakin on Mustafar, he pleads for Anakin to return to the good side. Anakin then offers Obi-Wan join him - give him a place in the new Empire. Obi-Wan rejects him.

I don’t know what to do about the twist?

Since Tarantino loves using Samuel L Jackson, why not imply that Windu turns into Vader?

That way you could still have the suit and the Vader hints if you’d like.

I don’t know how that’d be executed, but it sounds lovely!

I also feel like the Vader footage, if it’s present and not implied to be Anakin, would be confusing.

Music suggestion: The Force by Lettuce.

Feels right out of Kill Bill, but never been used in a Tarantino movie. And, you know, the title.

Oh my God this is exactly the sound I wanted! Thank you!

Damn, I missed it, but now I really wanna know what it was. 😦

Anyway, glad you liked the suggestion! They’ve got some good stuff to choose from - Phyllis might be another good choice (from the same album, actually).

Here’s a hint: another common Tarantino actor besides Samuel L. Jackson will make an appearance, and not in the background mind you.

JEDIT: For the bar scene, Blue Monday by New Order is going to be used.

I think that Darth Lunar’s dialogue from that scene is pretty much perfect, but I feel bad just taking it. I also fear that if I don’t use their lines mine will just be poor imitations of them!

I also feel like the Vader footage, if it’s present and not implied to be Anakin, would be confusing.

Characterize Windu as a Jedi who believes in the light side because he thinks that it’s naturally stronger. When he confronts Palpatine and sees his companions cut down effortlessly, he gains more respect for the power of the Dark Side. Anakin senses that Windu wants to assassinate the Chancellor and take his place, so he goes to stop him. Anakin here could be painted as a stalwart defender of Republic ideals. Anakin arrives just as Windu raises his saber to strike down the Chancellor, but then disfiguring lightning rains down on him. Palpatine screams about unlimited power. Scene end.

There are plenty of directions to go after this. One way to do it would be to show the attack on the Jedi temple without showing Anakin’s involvement. Show only one shot of a mysterious hooded figure, then the activation of a purple lightsaber.

Obi-wan discovers the massacre at the temple as Palpatine consolodates power. He has sent Vader to Mustafar to wipe out the Separatists, and we see brief flashes of a figure with a purple lightsaber striking down these enemies. Obi-wan fears that Anakin has done these things, and goes to Mustafar. It is here we see Anakin on that planet.

When Padme confronts Anakin, he explains that it was Vader that murdered so many, and he arrived too late to stop it. He further explains that he hoped to destroy Vader here, but he had already gone when he arrived. After he destroys Vader, he plans to capture Palpatine and put him on trial, and in so doing learn from him how to save Padme. Obi-wan then appears, and Padme collapses, perhaps in part due to the volcanic air along with the shock of Obi-wan’s anger. Anakin wants to bring her to the ship, but Obi-wan seems convinced that Anakin is a threat. He wonders just what happened in Palpatine’s chambers and how Anakin escaped the Chancellor unscathed. He believes that Anakin is really this Vader, and they fight.

In their final shouting match, Anakin laments how all the Jedi could turn against him and the ideals of the Republic, whereas Obi-wan blames Anakin for not helping Windu end the Sith.

Implying that Anakin is dead on the volcanic slope, and that Windu was disfigured from Palpatine’s attack like he himself was, would be all the justification needed for a mysterious masked figure to appear in Episode 4. Unfortunately, there’s still the problem of Obi-wan’s line ‘A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine before he turned to evil’. Though if this is only a fanedit of ROTS, you might be able to get away with the idea that Obi-wan taught Windu.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m really digging your idea man. If you don’t mind me making a suggestion, I also think it would be interesting if you were to use some genre music in certain places as well. Tarantino occasionally does this in his own films. For Bill’s death scene, he uses Ennio Morricone’s track “The Demise of Barbara and the Return of Joe” from Navajo Joe. At least one Morricone track is almost a MUST if you’re going full Tarantino.
I feel something from Morricone would be appropriate for something like the finale montage, when Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooine and such.

Another suggestion I really wanted to throw out here would be the use of Toru Takemitsu’s powerful and haunting score for Akira Kurosawa’s Ran. I think something like this could fit well with the Rumination scene or when Anakin falls to the dark side. Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood also has a pretty haunting soundtrack. Just some thoughts though!

I was already planning on using his music 😉

I will look into that! Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you NeverarGreat for the suggestion, but I don’t think that I’ll be using that idea. I definitely won’t show the Anakin’s involvement at the temple, though. 😃

First of all this edit looks really neat!

Maybe it could stand alone- this type of movie, while compelling, doesn’t fit the OT. By that I mean if they made an anthology movie like this people would say “it isn’t sw!” People complained about no crawl…

But more importantly by not connecting it with the originals you can tell a complete story. For the first time a PT edit doesn’t have to end leading into ANH. The dubbing let’s you tell an improved story and change scenes to have a completely different meaning.

For example, what if Anakin dies on Mustafar? Obi-Wan’s greatest fear was to fail a mentor, and he does. He now has to directly confront his fear and kill his best friend. Well, more like leave him for dead. Most PT edits need to warp a bunch of stuff up for the OT, but this isn’t needed for a story like this. It’d be a bit weird if this movie ends with Anakin reborn as Vader but the conclusion of the story told in a traditional English trilogy with all new characters (unless you made an all in one OT Tarantino).

BTW how are you doing this? Are you using a Japanese dubbed ROTS with custom subtitles or are you recording the Japanese lines?
