PHASE [insert number]

???

Marvel movies are categorized into “phases.” Phase 1 is Iron Man through Avengers, Phase 2 is Iron Man 3 through Ant-Man, and Phase 3 is Captain America: Civil War through Avengers 4.

Apparently these covers put which phase each movie is in on the spine.

What? Lol

I’m not really sure how to explain it more clearly…? Here’s the Wikipedia article of the films in the MCU, broken up by “phase.”

It’s the same as if each Star Wars movie had “prequel,” “original,” or “sequel” trilogy listed on the spine, I guess.

Okay. So stories in the same phase happened around the same time? Seems like they’re trying too hard.

Yes and no - Captain America 1 takes place in the 1940s while the rest of Phase 1 is all 2010ish, but Cap 1 introduces the Tesseract which sets up Avengers 1 (it’s the MacGuffin of both films), and Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s while the rest of Phase 3 is all 2016-18ish.

Think of it more like seasons of a TV show. Each phase of films is loosely planned out before they start working on them as opposed to just going a movie at a time and hoping everything fits together in the end.

Seems like an odd thing to include in the marketing lingo. Seems more of an internal administrative thing.

It kinda made sense at first when The Avengers was the culmination of the previous “phase one” movies, as in like the finale of that season. Phase two and three have been like that to an extent but not completely. At this point it’s biggest use is to just compartmentalize the movies chronologically.

They’ve been doing it that way since they announced all of the Phase Two films at once around the time of the first Avengers movie. There’s also limited edition Phase One and Phase Two Blu-ray box sets.

Yep, also this. When you’ve got 20+ films that all share continuity but are also part of their own franchises, you’ve got to find a way to organize it all in some fashion.

Hmm. Given that the only Marvel films I really enjoyed are Iron Man 1 and the Guardians movies, I’ll just go with it.

Yep, that’s awful. I own the BD collection. One can only wonder what they are thinking when they have poster art like this available:

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Oil painting? Pfft. Dated.

You can’t go wrong with a movie poster done by Boris Vallejo.

I just want to know who Kevin James has compromising pictures of.

I cannot and will not accept that Jack Reacher one is real without proof 😉. Having the “Thrilling” quote bigger than Cruise’s name defies belief. Links to where it’s being sold please.

What better way to pay tribute to the late Heath, than with this DVD boxset:

Clearly a labour of love for the cover designer.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.
