Really well done edits, feels natural all the way trough and not just like somethings is showed in there, really great. The only thing that bugs me a little bit is there seems to be a a little grey stribe on the egde of the black bars in HBP, DH-P1 and P2, which isnt present on 3-5, and in terms of the quality it seems that maybe DH-P1 and P2 are a bit washed out in the colors where as all the others seem fine. So if you ever redo them maybe you could consider these things. But overall it doesnt take anything away from the fantastic work you have done and the end product is top-notch 😃

Thanks for the feedback on the edits. I have a feeling I know where the gray edges are coming from. I had to insert artificial black bars due to some of the editing I did. I also increased the contrast on those last 3 movies slightly, so the gray bars are likely the original black bars that have been lightened and aren’t fully being covered by the 2.35:1 bars I put on. I can probably put on 2.39:1 bars to fix those. The contrast difference is probably causing the slightly washed out look on colors too. I’ll keep those points in mind for any future edits I may do.

I would love the edit of Prisoner of Azkaban. I do own all the movies and books. I just bought the extended second one and was disappointed when I found out that besides a digital copy of the first one, the rest don’t exist. Your work is great, I love the color correction too. I can’t figure out how to dm you for the code. I would be very happy and grateful for it.

Would love to see these films. What is a “PM” is it just a response like this?

I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter so an extended edition fan edit would be AMAZING for me. Thank you.

I didn’t even know Chamber of Secrets and Philosopher’s Stone had official extended editions. Thank you so much for informing me of this. I went I bought them off ITunes straight away.

These look great ill definitely need to nab these at some point btw what did you mean by the extended versions "coming to an end on Freeform’ did they not retain the airing rights or get new masters ?

Freeform lost the rights to the HP movies on 12/31/17. The rights are currently with NBC Universal and HBO. Currently, HBO has the rights to stream the movies, but they only show the theatrical versions of the films. It is not known at this point whether NBC Universal stations, like USA, will show the theatrical versions or the extended versions when they begin showing them later this year.

JJPotter: Have you had the opportunity to see my extended version of Half-Blood Prince?

There were some real challenges that left me traumatized. Chief among them was the quality of the delete scenes (on DVD, the BD was better), matching the color timing, and adding back the Harry/Hermione discussion of the Marauder’s Map.

The last item reveals a ridiculous piece of business where they split a scene in half and tried to treat it as two scenes. (Details of changes are in the first post: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Harry-Potter-and-the-Half-Blood-Prince-Extended-and-Enhanced-by-Doctor-M/id/12793 ) PM me if you are interested in seeing it.

Anyway, I love that you took on some of the green screened deleted scenes. I assume you did that for Deathly Hallows as well?

When final full versions are available I would love to see these as well.

Doctor M,

I haven’t had a chance to look at your edit so far, but I will certainly give it a look. There are definitely some challenges with HBP that I fought with on my edits. I did some green screened scenes in PoA, but I didn’t do much with DH except for some of the green screen areas when the battle begins. At some point once I learn After Effect better I want to see if I can do anything with a couple of scenes that I didn’t work on with these first edits.

I remember the Harry/Dudley shaking hands scene had some massive green screens. I’ll have to see if I can find which of your links has that scene.

Edit: Technically, SORCERER’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets have official extended cuts, but they definitely were not done very professionally. I think it was most likely someone at ABC not Warner.

Chamber of Secrets had obviously recycled shots, wrong music cues and various other issues. I’ve been sticking staunchly to my extended DVD only because all I see are the seams when I watch the retail version.

I can’t recall anything in ‘Stone’ that smacked me in the face (of course I didn’t spend hours dissecting all the scenes either), but even just going over the official version and dubbing in ‘Philosopher’ wouldn’t be awful.

JJPotter, if you wanted to add those to your impressive collection here, there is a reasonable argument to be made for the effort.

I actually made a change to Philosopher’s Stone for my own personal collection. There was one scene in the “official” extended version that always seemed jarring to me. Right before the scene with Dudley, there is a short clip of an owl flying in and perching close to the house. But there is NO music behind it and it sounds horrible. For my personal version, I added music that connects those scenes together. I made some other small changes as well. I have thought of going back and doing my own Chamber edit, but just haven’t done it to this point.

Hello again! 😃

Reading your message and also having read your thread about making your “Enhanced ABC Cut”:

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Harry-Potter-and-the-Chamber-of-Secrets-The-Enhanced-ABC-Cut-Finished/id/8252

I was wondering if your complaints are mainly about the ABC Family Version, or the actual Extended Version on Blu-ray?.. I ask because, for example, you mention:

“Extended footage editing flaw fixed/Deleted: Aunt Petunia laughs without her face or neck moving (was probably a bad overdub).
Extended footage editing flaw fixed/Deleted: Mrs. Mason moves lips without talking (again bad overdub).”

These two mistakes are not on the Extended Blu-ray.
You also mention:

“Replaced: Theatrical’s wider shot used just before the hand of glory tag close up.”

And I know that the “hand of glory tag close up” is not on the Blu-ray at all. I know it was in the deleted scenes and in the ABC Family Version, but not in the Blu-ray Extended Version.

So, that’s why I was wondering if there were more mistakes fixed between the ABC Family release and the Blu-ray release. By the way, I do think the first two Extended Versions were actually made by Warner, but especially the second one was rushed, causing some oversights, some of which were apparently fixed when they redid it for Blu-ray five years later.
The only real mistakes left, I think, were:

  • the “overdub of Hermione telling Ron and Harry to put on Crabbe and Goyle’s robes”;
  • “Harry flipped to the end of the book twice in a row (without going back to the front), then starts flipping back to front only to suddenly be seen flipping to the end again from a different angle.”;
  • and the complete extended “Pudding with the Masons” scene, which is too long and not really funny, completely ruining the tension of the scene leading up to that moment.

But, what do you think?..

P.S.: Philosopher’s Stone also has an Extended Version on Blu-ray.

@Freddy2 - Wow, I never bothered with the official extended cuts because I just assumed they were as seen on TV.
Something to definitely look into.

I stumbled across your site looking for the extended versions of the last 5 Harry Potter films. I own both the blu rays of each film and the digital versions. I would appreciate a link to download the "extended fanedit " versions you have built.
Thank you.

I own all 8 movies, I started watching again, and stopped at 3, because only 1 and 2 have extended editions. Can you share with me the link and download for the other movies you have with the extended editions? Great movie to have scene cuts from the book that you know its missing.

(Finally) watched the first of these tonight, Prisoner of Azkaban.

A few thoughts:
Great picture quality and a completely professional editing job.

I’m pretty sure the BD doesn’t have a stereo track and IIRC the deleted scenes are stereo, so I can completely understand why JJPotter went with a full downmix instead of trying to upmix the extra scenes.
I just don’t love the audio. I felt like I was moving the volume up and down a lot, and even through a DPLII tuner, I don’t recall hearing anything behind me. Maybe if I pushed it through two speakers it would have sounded better.
I think I’m going to sync some English subtitles in the future though.

I was ready to say something about the Whomping Willow catching the same bird twice with the deleted scene addition, but I recall a conversation with ADM, who said that officially that’s how they edited it. So if it’s wrong, it’s at least wrong officially.

Overal, I love it and I’m ready to toss ADM’s old DVD.

Edit: Wow, I completely forgot to mention the extra extra scenes. The Knight Bus spin was fun, but Sirius breaking into Griffindor Tower was so well done you wouldn’t know the scene was incomplete. ❤️ having that back in the movie.

Edit 2: Goblet of Fire - My opinion is the same. I did switch my AVR to 2-channel output and the volume was fine. The tracks don’t upmix well.

Got a nasty cold so I had an excuse to binge-plow through these.
Absolutely phenomenal; much better than the older edits I had from various sources (no disrespect to the older stuff, love their work, but obviously as technology progresses so does quality). The scenes blend together much smoother than before, it’s great.

@Doctor M, In terms of the audio there’s really only so much you can do. Until WB releases official extended versions (which I doubt will ever happen), we’re just going to have to make do with a stereo downmix for now.

I’ve got both a quality soundbar for things like this, and a surround sound system for 5.1/7.1 4K/BD/etc when it calls for it. I just alternate between the two depending on what I’m watching. Hope I don’t sound antagonistic, just trying to clarify that there’s only so much that can be done!

Great job JJ, I’m really impressed.
