TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 74

The primary problem with the revenge angle is that it is not dramatically established in the film. You just sort of have to assume that’s the case, and with a sizable reduction in climactic stakes.

Since TFA establishes that they discovered the location of the Resistance base and TLJ relies on that, seems better to keep that plot point if at all possible. V1 felt off, and it was in part due to the Resistance just keeping on their attack for seemingly no reason when they ought to retreat. V2’s structure lets the movie stick closer to the theatrical TFA while keeping all the intended gains. I suppose one could make an argument for the ‘revenge’ angle, but I feel it’s more complete the way we did it for V2.

Okay, you have the better argument. I was not considering continuity with The Last Jedi.

Hello mates! I just registered, though I have been reading in this forum for a couple of years. I just tried out the 1080p version of TFA: A Gentle Restructure and to my surprise it appears to be the original movie. I made it as far as the Falcon leaving Jakku and it never jumped into Hyperspace. Rather than continue I thought I should inquire here. I used the link from the Fan Edits .info site but I have not tried the DVD5 or the 720p version. Can anyone clue me in on what is up? I will go back and read through this thread but… 74 pages. It might take me awhile. lol

I thought the .info link had been updated.

Hmmmm… Alright. Should I look for the link in Reddit then and not from FanEdit.info? The torrent pack I downloaded came from the later location.

EDIT: Seems the Google Drive location does specify that is it 2.1 so it is very possible that the Torrent version has not been updated, or maybe the tracker is wrong. Downloading from the Google drive link now. Thanks for the replies!

The Reddit link has multiple download options for 2.1.

Why WOULDN’T the Resistance keep on attacking? If anything, they would be more motivated to complete their mission after witnessing the destructive power (or at least the immense firepower) of SKB first hand. Why would they retreat from trying to destroy the thing that has just been confirmed to be the biggest threat the galaxy has ever seen? I really don’t think there needs be a justification for this. How would even the Resistance recon even learn in the heat of the battle that the FO is recharging the base?

This is one of the few issues I have with the restructure (which, make no mistake, I absolutely adore). It makes a bold move to remove a major similarity with A New Hope: the imminent danger to the Rebel base from the superweapon that they are currently attacking. And by tying two tragic events beautifully and making the final mission only a partial success, it pulls this ambition off with more than flying colors. Only to return to the very premise it wanted to avoid a few seconds after…

As for the TLJ tie-in, the movie never clarifies how the Resistance had been exposed, just the fact that it was. In fact, I think any potential fan-edit of TLJ would benefit from implying that at least a few weeks had passed between the the two movies, as opposed to mere hours. And that would be helped by removing the line that the FO had followed the Resistance recon ship to the Illenium system.

I can see it both ways, so thanks for the explanation. Fortunately this edit is a good base for others to run with, and it’d be simple enough to remove that scene as one modifies it to their own liking.
I still personally prefer the version published for the previously articulated reasons.

Yes, .info has V1. I will delete those Mega files to prevent others wasting their time until it can be updated.

Yes thanks, thanks to everyone who responded. I have it sorted.

V2 is amazing Hal. This is probably my favorite Star Wars movie to rewatch now, Empire still being the one which impacted me the most, but this one is a hell of a lot of fun. Let me just take another moment to say, your Ep. II and III are also great, thanks for that work! I watched through the Machete order for the first time using the Revisited edits and your edits together - such a good time.

I am trying to create a DVD9 or BD25 out of the 1080p file for TFA. I noticed you only have the DVD5 up. Is there a larger ISO version you created already?

Thanks for the kind words, and I am glad you enjoyed them!
Where are you only seeing DVD versions listed? There should be at least three options.

Of course you are welcome!

Okay, so I went to your Google drive and from there obtained the zip files, which I linked to from the Reddit Restructured V.2 post. The options are 720p, 1080p, and DVD5 for all of your edits.

OK, so I dl the 1080p version using the torrent but when I tried to play it, it will only play for a few minutes at a time (it seem that it breaks at specific intervals, maybe at the ‘chapter’ points, but idk for sure). When using windows video player it crashes the program (and comes up with this error code 0xc00d36cb but it doen’t do this for any of the other videos I possess so it must be something to do with this one), and when using VLC it skips half the film. Anyone else experience the problem, or know how to fix it? I’d really appreciate your help.

PS. I did skip ahead to some of the bigger changes and can I just say bravo to all that participated in this fan edit.

My 1080p copies of V5 work just fine for the record, so yeah, I’m going with “probably a corrupted download.”

Yup, most likely. What that guy said. I have had the same happen with corrupted torrents.

I just found a raw freeware program someone created which states it can create a BD file structure from an MKV! 25gb BD collection of fan edits on the way. 😃

Yay, just have to spend another day dl it then 😕 Thanks for the feedback.

OK, I got it to re-dl. It works now and can I just say, thank you. This IS the best TFA edit.
Having what it all the way through, it still has the same problem as the original: The ending. If you plan to make any additional changes, maybe to fit with a TLJ edit (if your going to attempt that) then you could try removing the closing scenes of Rey finding Luke. This way you could end it with Rey leaving (on an adventure) and they wouldn’t get repeated in TLJ. Just an idea. Still can’t love the Star Killer change enough lol.

Nah. Just like the prequel trilogy is unhelpably ‘prequel’ (in terms of assuming you are familiar with what came before), the sequel trilogy so far seems very much a serial. I have no interest in revisiting TFA in light of TLJ. There were other little things about TFA that could have been trimmed, but I liked the movie and preferred not to hack it all up. Despite how that last sentence sounded, I am looking forward to Sir Ridley’s edit which will make many of these little trims in addition to what’s in TFA:R.

Hey Hal, I was curious about the change after the Starkiller battle. After the battle in the original they jump to lightspeed back to D’Qar but in your version you just have it look like they just fly off.

All my life as I looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never in my mind did I know where I was, what I was doing.

It was to let the musical rescore transition naturally.
But, if it’s any consolation, we see the Falcon jump to lightspeed in this version after they leave Jakku, taken from this scene (by NeverarGreat).
