The Last Jedi regrade - One LUT to rule them all... (Released)

I created this thread to continue the discussion in kk650’s thread. The objective is to obtain the best possible LUT for regrading TLJ, that satisfies the largest number of people. Most if not all seemed to agree the contrast boost was not an improvement, however the contrast boost was not the only change I made to the LUT, and so here’s a third version, that keeps the colors from v2, but doesn’t alter the contrast of the movie.

Blue tones are drastically improved. Good job.

You’ve definitely removed that blanket tint, looks awesome.

One thing, this could be my end, but it seems that the shadows have boosted Red values – the starfields look red tinted. Is that just a byproduct of removing the blanket tint?

The red tint is in the original frame as well. It’s a helo from the explosion. The saturation has been boosted slightly for the regrade, so the helo is more pronounced.

I am personally seeing a red tinted lightsaber core and red tinted snow/salt/whatever that planet’s covered with. As JawsTDS said, the starfield also looks red tinted, though that may be just for that shot.

Dre, if you didn’t add red yourself, you most likely increased the saturation too much. The colours would look nicer and more balanced if you reduced the saturation IMHO. I prefer your V1 regrade settings.

Yes, or maybe somewhere in between. It’s nice to see the grass on the island more bright and vibrant like in tfa, but perhaps it’s a bit much in other cases. Still not bad at all, though.

Isn’t there a way to reduce the saturation of reds specifically?

I was referring to the starfield in the crawl and credits – I applied the LUT in my NLE. Looked red on my monitors, but I’m no expert so it could just be my end.

Yes, you are right. I’m in the process of fixing that issue for v4.

Looks amazing, can’t find a single thing to critique.

Curious, have you ever experimented with LUTs for TFA to fix the pink skin tones / lightsabres and red X-Wing jump suits?

No, I haven’t, but I might give it a go! 😃

V4 is definately an improvement on V3 IMHO. Nice job!

Dre, do you have any plans to put this V4 regrade out there as a proper release?

I honestly prefer the LUT’s so much more. You can customize them and simply apply them yourself without downloading the entire film.

Yes, but there are surely many people who might want to watch it without getting into the business of encoding video! That said, I think Dre has done more than his part in releasing the LUT. If enough people start asking for an encoding, I’m sure one of the many helpful people around here will get around to it at some point.

Honestly, why isn’t releasing LUT files for movies more of a thing? Quick, small, and easy to apply.

Movies often benefit from shot by shot or scene by scene corrections. But when there’s a lazy single setting grading on top, that turns out to be relatively unpopular around here, an LUT works very well to fix it.

Thanks! Your v3 is looking pretty sweet as well! 😃

Sadly, while I can produce LUTs very easily, I don’t have the software installed to quickly render a regrade with the LUT. I probably should invest some time and money to update my software and hardware, since I’m mostly working on an aging laptop. 😉
