The only cgi in any of the prequels that ever looked bad to me without meticulously analyzing individual frames is the opening space battle after the title crawl. Obi Wan and anakins ship look terrible. I’ve never noticed anything else until it was pointed out to me.

I’ve been cursed with the inability to not notice all the bad CG whenever I watch.

Okay guys, wondering out loud here. How much do we care about a midichlorians reference? I’ve found a way to get rid of it in the Plagueis scene but I’m not sold, and I’m thinking, is it that bad that we hear someone mention midichlorians once? My thought process being, if it’s not explained what they are, it might actually add another mysterious wrinkle to the Force and Plagueis (plus they are technically canon). Does that line of thinking make sense? Or am I just being lazy?

I’m 99% sure HAL got rid of the midichlorians reference during the Plagueis scene and I didn’t even notice anything was missing. I’m in the process of downloading his V5 right now though, and already got rid of V4.2 to free up space, so I can’t check at the moment.

I checked, he cut out the bit about creating life, which is something I’m somewhat fond of.

I don’t remember which one, but there’s an edit which renders the line, “He could use the Force [] to create life.”

That’s L8, and he cuts away to the shot from behind to make it work. This is what I’d do if I were to do it, though I’m not crazy about the cutting away.

I think you can leave it that way. The creating life bit is interesting as it can even imply that Palpy could be Anakin’s father.

Alright, looks I’ll have an updated workprint done sometime this weekend, and I’ll send it out to all who I sent the first one to, plus Mala. If anyone else is interested, let me know.

I was going to say something but snooker pretty much got me covered, and even caught several
things I could never catch on my own. Take some and add some, his thoughts were pretty much the same as mine. I quite enjoyed it Dom.

I would like to take a look. And please, for the love of goodness, no force bacteria please…

I’m going to try to take that out for this one and see how I feel about it.

I got halfway through your first cut, but I would like to see your second one too Dom.

I did have a question about the first cut as well. If I’m not mistaken, I noticed that you had reordered a number of scenes between the Chancellor rescue and Anakin’s turn. I was wondering if you would care to elaborate on your motivation to move around some scenes (either in this thread or in a private message).

Sure thing. I hope there were reasons you didn’t make it all the way through that don’t have anything to do with the quality of the edit!

Yes I did, mostly going off L8wrtr’s reordering though with some additional heavy borrowing from Hal. The main idea being to put emphasis on Anakin’s relationship with Palpatine. With the big change of putting the Plagueis convo upfront, we’re getting Palpatine is the first and best solution to Anakin’s problem that he’s hearing. After that, hearing the Jedi method from Yoda (basically do nothing and get over it), doesn’t sit well with him. Everything that happens after on goes further to put Anakin on Palpatine’s side and against the Jedi.

I could go more in depth but I’m weary of boring people.

Also, just uploaded the second workprint cut, will be sending it out. If you’ve already seen the first, feel free to skip this one, as the changes are pretty minimal (mainly just fixing the glitches and some other small things). I’ve done a new crawl too, but I might post that by itself soon too to get some wider feedback on that specifically.

Just sent Dom a PM, but in short, I would feel very good about recommending this cut of ROTS to those who are interested in or enjoy my cut but would prefer to leave Padme’s fate alone.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Haha, not at all! Just life got in the way.

Ah I see. It’s like by sewing the seeds early on, Anakin then looks at everything else with doubt. It’s been so long since I watched L8wrtr’s version, I need to watch your new version, Hal’s most recent one and L8’s just to compare them now.

Okay, I’m trying to nail down the crawl right now. Don’t know who’s seen both cuts, but the crawl is somewhat different in each.

For reference, here’s the crawl in the first work print I sent out, which is maybe a bit too long:

The Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy. The fragile Republic is crumbling, having conceded extreme executive powers to combat the attacks of the ruthless Separatist leader, Count Dooku.

Forced to wage war across the stars, the Jedi, once peaceful protectors, have left room for the droid army to sweep into the galactic capital and kidnap Chancellor Palpatine, head of the Republic Senate.

As the Separatist forces attempt to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor…

Here’s the one from the second one, which brings the word count down a good deal:

The Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy. Its fragile Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless Separatist leader, Count Dooku.

In a stunning move, the fiendish droid commander, General Grievous, has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine, head of the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist forces attempt to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor, and bring the war one step closer to its end…

And here’s the crawl I’m feeling good about right now, which tries to marry the two somewhat:

The Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy. The Jedi Order is spread thin, forced to combat the attacks of the ruthless Separatist leader, Count Dooku.

In a stunning move, the fiendish droid commander, General Grievous, has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine, head of the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist forces attempt to flee with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor and bring the war one step closer to its end…

The final one is looking pretty good thus far.

Would “counter” work better than “combat” in your latest crawl? “Combat the attack” sounds like “attack the attack” to me.

Dom, since you aim at replacing the soundtrack on many scenes, are you going to try something with the AOTC ending in order to remove the Vader’s theme that’s quite out of place here ? I’m thinking about trying myself with Shadow of the Empire soundtrack. Don’t know if feasible though.

Yeah I want to change that, but it might be hard to get something else to fit.

I know this post was a few months ago, but have you thought about using William’s own original version?

I believe I’ve seen that before, and, as much as I prefer it, I don’t think I’d ever use it unless a recording with a real orchestra popped up. Just not quite right like that, unfortunately.

Yeah, that makes sense.

BTW I posted a bunch of restored cues (with early edits of the footage) from ROTS if you want to go through that to see if there is anything you like (for example, maybe “Goodbye Old Friend”).
