I finally caved and got a smart phone this year, but I don’t trust it to do anything beyond simple web browsing. I won’t even log into the forum with it.

…Why do you have it then? It’s just a small tablet that makes phone calls, and a tablet is just a laptop with no built-in physical keyboard. It’s a computer. Why do you have a computer if you’re too scared to use it?

Your wifi will not reenable itself (from being disabled) by itself, but it will connect if it is enabled and detects a wifi SSID you’ve connected to before (if you told it to). If you got a notification about connecting to wifi, it was probably because the business’ guest access point has a confirmation page (ie. “I’m not a robot”) you need to access before it will let you use the wifi.

Also, if your friend had an app that appeared to boot on its own, I’d bet money he has location sharing turned on, and some app (like Google Now) popped up a relevant notification for whatever business you were in at the time. You can turn off location sharing for specific apps, or altogether, if you don’t want your phone to do that.

oh, but as long as software has bugs, and apps have bugs, and apps have the ability to control wifi, and bad actors exist, then yes, wifi essentially can ‘re-enable itself’. You trust the manual too much i think.

I don’t see why enabling wifi is a big deal anyway. I would imagine disconnecting when you don’t want to would be a bother because it uses data.

Your phone is not going to connect to a random SSID it hasn’t connected to before. You can even tell your phone to stop searching for whether any new access points might be in range and notifying you about it.

PROCEEDS TO BLATHER ON ABOUT SOMETHING NOT RELATED TO POLITICS

I live in Oklahoma, and for the last week and a half the public school teachers and staff have been on strike in an effort to get more funding for public schools here. Oklahoma lawmakers have since tried to throw them a token raise and minimal increases in funding but they turned it down.

It’s my understanding that Oklahoma is 50th in the nation for funding for public education.

Well, if you really must know, my previous dumb phone started going bad on me, (poor reception, being unable to send texts) but at least it had a text keypad. (My LG is the emergency back up phone and texts are a pain in the ass.) There don’t seem to be any current models out there with the little blackberry style QWERTY keyboard anymore, and this new phone was relatively cheap and on sale. I resisted a smartphone this long because I suck at touchscreens and have to use a stylus just to type.

And I’m not scared to use it. I’m merely cautious. I don’t have to my banking on the darn thing or update my social media status every two minutes. I’m also staring at this site for too many hours a day as it is. 😉

I’m not sure if Frink wanted to be on topic as much as he just wanted to bitch about being off topic.

Plus, SW is a mod, and he’s off topic. So it seems fine to be so.

I guess there just aren’t any political/sex scandals or impending wars to discuss today.

President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with governors and members of Congress at the White House in Washington, April 12, 2018. President looking to re-enter TPP negotiations, says Republican Senator Sasse

President Donald Trump has told top economic advisors to look at the possibility of re-entering a massive Pacific trade deal, the White House said Thursday.

The president has asked chief economic advisor Larry Kudlow and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to consider trying to rejoin the Trans-Pacific Partnership, according to White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters. He wants them to “take another look at whether or not a better deal could be negotiated,” she said.

Earlier, Sens. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said the president told lawmakers about his directive. The senators were among the lawmakers from agricultural states who met with Trump on Thursday about the White House’s proposed tariffs on China, which farmers worry would lead to retaliation that hurts their businesses.

After the meeting, Sasse told reporters the 12-nation trade deal agreed to by President Barack Obama and abandoned by Trump would be the “single best way” to counter alleged Chinese trade abuses. Trump has used the threat of tariffs to punish Beijing for alleged intellectual property theft by Chinese companies.

Trump withdrew from the agreement last year as one of his first acts in office.

Lolololol.

To be fair to the greedy companies who don’t care about human life, if developments of cures aren’t profitable they won’t do it so we need to make sure there are incentives.
