Here’s a revised option B with a final “Hello?” at the end. I’m not sure it works better, though. Looking forward to your thoughts about which option B is the best option B.

Yep, I’m sold. If you’re going with option B, this is the one to go with.

Thanks for all the input on that point. Sounds like 'The Fallen Knight’s option A vs. this as option B.

Also, re: the ending. I don’t really see any merit in swapping the order of scenes, especially since up to this point every film has had a final scene without any (English) dialogue.

Leia only has 15 seconds of screen time in Rogue One, she’s no main character.

I’m leaving the ending alone; to me it would be a mistake to remove it in a fan edit. But it’s just MHO.

Here are two clips required in order to remove BB8 with the [Rich Evans] AT-ST [/Rich Evans]. The only problem, apart from potential less-than-perfect editing, is that we do not see BB8 explicitly rejoin our heroes until Poe cuddles him on Crait. Might be okay, though. I took a lead from Buzzclub (the German TLJ edit thread guy).

Not bad, especially the first one. What about the fact that we see BB-8 gunning people down in the AT-ST in the background of the Finn vs Phasma long shot? I think it’d be nice for some of the BB antics to be removed, but I think that shot alone makes it hard to remove this one seamlessly.

Also appreciate the Rich Evans gif.

Any thought on removing the “Lifting rocks” line when Rey does lift rocks at the end of the film? It felt too on the nose, if the shot before transitioning to Luke and Kylo was just her facing the boulders, I think it would work a lot better.

I think this is one of a few instances of deliberate irony in the film. Luke tells Rey that the force isn’t about lifting rocks, but it’s how she saves the resistance in the end. Similarly Luke insists Rey’s wrong to expect him to pick up a lightsaber and face down the First Order, and then that’s exactly what he ends up doing. It’s fate’s jest.

One more thing about the switching the ending before I shut up about it…

I do believe that there is merit in reordering the scenes as it helps to show how quickly Luke’s act is already spreading, it also fixes the weird pothole where Broom Boi appears to be watching the Falcon go into hyperspace which it would already be in at that point. Also, it adds more to Leia’s “We have everything we need.” line as the audience would already see that people are willing to help the Resistance, i.e. Broom Boi, and it provides a clearer resolution to the “no one is coming to help” problem on Crait.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like a more optimistic ending if we end with Rey and the gang (characters we can relate more to as we know their place in the story) as opposed to Broom Boi, a character with next to no lines that will cause people to make theories about him for 2 years. I agree that the kids need to stay, but the focus at the end of the movie should be on where are characters are currently at and focus on leading into the next movie and where they will be, similar to the ending of The Empire Strikes Back, or any other Star Wars movie for that matter.

Okay, I’m done now 😃

True. And that’s why Rogue One’s ending (among other things) didn’t work at all for me.

Those are pretty good there Hal. If there is someone who can do some good CGI work, it is possible (but difficult) to have BB-8 come out from off the camera while Rose and Finn run to the shuttle to catch up to them. The advantage of the possibility is it is not a close up scene, it’s from a distance. So a skilled CGI artist POSSIBLY could make something like that.

Just a small criticism of Phasma 2. The audio crossfade is a little heavy from when they’re running to the shuttle to when they blast out of the shuttle bay and the music gets “mushy”. I did a quick cross-fade right on the cut and the score flows more smoothly I think:

I prefer your option B. It makes Hux seem a lot more sure of himself, reminiscent of Tarkin.

As for the ending, I personally don’t see the problem with the original ending. I’m fine with Brom Boi.

Yes! This musical transition works better. Also, I appreciate your inclusion of the deleted scene.

The visual transition from looking up to Finn after Phasma falls to Finn and Rose running towards the shuttle is a little jarring.

Thanks for the tip about the audio crossfade; that’s the kind of feedback I need sometimes!

I’m not sure either about the shuttle thing and being able to seamlessly remove BB8 in the AT-ST. I’m unwilling to attempt anything that would be at all jarring, so we’ll see. I’m still hoping someone can blow us all away with a seamless Phasma removal from the entire movie.

“Oh, it’s beautiful.”

I know some people said they still missed it even with the shots of the lightsaber turning, but I think this is perfect. We know something is up with his hand, and we saw Snoke lay the lightsaber down earlier…
I just think it is a good example of rewarding the audience for paying attention, it could be a pretty satisfying moment for a person watching this edit for the first time.

EDIT: One little note. There is a moment where we see Kylo turning his saber, but then in the very next shot, a close up of Rey, it is static. Sort of a jump cut. Not a big deal, but I wonder if you could swap that shot of her with the next shot, a close up of Kylo. So when Snoke says, “He ignites it” we see Rey instead of Kylo. Maybe it is just me though.

It’s clips like this, that make me very excited to see your full edit. In my opinion this adds to the badasary of Kylo, leaves a bit more audience suspense and doesn’t diminish Snoke’s character as much because we as the audience find out he’s been betrayed the same time the character does.

What reason would he have to think she isn’t?

By the way, the “Poe meets Rey” scene at the end really needs to be removed, it’s very inconsistent with TFA ending and even is with LTJ.

I am not sure I’ll remove that scene, though it felt to me like Poe needs to have his smirk smacked off his face; he’s too chipper for the death count that his attitude has had this whole movie.
But that was ‘cynical first viewing me.’ So we’ll see.
