Exactly. Artwork was beautiful though, for majora’s mask the liner book even had sheet music for the ocarina songs. All the text was in japanese though except for the song titles.

Did you have to order it from Japan or was it an import that you bought from someone else?

I hope everyone will stop saying “Breath of the Wild has no music” now.
The soundtrack is five discs.
And I want it.

Breath of the Wild’s music is mostly atmospheric. It only has a few big numbers (and I can only think of three that are not recycled), compared to the many that are available in other Zelda games. Case in point: https://www.zreomirror.com/twilight-symphony/

Yes, BOTW does have music, but most of it is not catchy or at all memorable. This especially doesn’t jive with how big a deal Nintendo has made in recent years about how important music is to the Zelda franchise.

…And, doing some research before submitting this post, I found out that Koji Kondo, the primary composer for much of the Zelda franchise, did not compose at all for BOTW.

You say “atmospheric” like it’s a bad thing. I think the music in BotW is fantastic and does exactly what it should. If there was an epic catchy overworld theme you would quickly get tired of it. Instead we get quiet and unpredictable music that stays in the background and lets us be present in the world and attentive to the sounds around us. The music doesn’t have to scream at us that “wow, this is such an adventure”, it just whispers “this is nice” as we hear footsteps in the grass, birds, wind, enemies in the distance.

In older Zelda games the overworld was just the space between the important experiences, so playing some adventurous music as we head for our next stop makes sense. But in BotW you make your own adventure. The music can’t just assume that you’re out to do heroic deeds all the time. You’re exploring, you’re gathering, you’re looking for secrets, maybe aimlessly wandering. You can spend hours not doing anything in particular. The music works perfectly for that.

And then there are the themes. Lots and lots of recognizable themes with many variations. They are not always catchy or hummable (but when they are, they’re great), but they underscore what is happening in the game and feel like a part of the world.

I wouldn’t say the soundtrack is worse than Twilight Princess or Wind Waker which are my favorites. It’s not better either. It’s just different from what we’re used to, just like the game itself.

The one thing that I miss from the game and soundtrack are unique dungeons/temples with their own themes. But that’s okay.

What I’m saying is the argument for wanting more non-atmospheric music in the game is not invalid. Yes, it’s just different but I miss it. I find myself hanging around Hyrule Castle and Rito Village a lot because I enjoy listening to the music so much.

You make a huge assumption by saying that people would get bored with overworld themes. If the problem is that almost the whole game is on the overworld, there could then be different themes for different regions. (Which is also basically the case in other games.) It doesn’t have to be just one Hyrule Field track for the whole map.

And besides that, the overworld in other Zelda games is not just the in-between place from a to b. Maybe just Hyrule/Termina Field is in Ocarina of Time or Majora’s Mask, but in most games there’s more to the overworld than a to b.

I guess I made some generalizations that didn’t work for you. I agree with the points you make. But my point is that I personally appreciate that the game isn’t always playing a clear theme. There’s a lot of breathing room in the soundtrack which makes it a very relaxing experience in general, I like that. I also love how older Zelda games use music, but I appreciate that they tried something new.

That’s totally false.

No it’s not. I assert that the most memorable music is that from the five villages, the castle, the title theme (in the trailer), and music played by Kass. That is, the non-atmospheric score. The atmospheric music might still aid to set a mood, and it might also be very good for what it is, but it is not catchy or memorable in its own right.

Some other tracks I find memorable/catchy:

  • Guardian battle
  • Hinox battle
  • Molduga battle
  • Lynel battle
  • Boss battles
  • Test of strength/shrine battle
  • Korok forest
  • Dragon
  • Stable
  • Shrine
  • Tarrey town
  • Lost woods
  • Abandoned North Mine
  • Riding (day/night)
  • Parasailing minigame
  • Shieldsurfing minigame

Currently have got into a flight sim mood, so have been replaying X-Wing Alliance and am playing Crimson Skies for the first time. Sooo good! Crimson Skies reminds me a lot of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (which is fine with me, 'cos Sky Captain rocks. Giant Robots? Gadget planes?? Pulpy goodness??? HELL YES.)

What joystick do you use? I learned rather quickly that using a gamepad for PC flight games just doesn’t work.

I’ve never played X-Wing Alliance, although back in the day I did love TIE Fighter quite a lot.

I’m actually using an Xbox 360 controller. I used to use a joystick years ago but I ended up selling it off due to the fact that I was hardly using it and it was just taking up space. 😕 Crimson Skies is actually rather well calibrated for the 360 controller, I didn’t have to do any changing around with the control scheme.

X-Wing Alliance, on the other hand, did have to have some adjusting (as well as quite a lot of fiddling around to get the game to work on a modern system.) Ideally I would use a joystick, but at the mo I’m just working with what I’ve got to hand.

Haven’t played Tie Fighter yet, but I have played a lot of other DOS games. Recently completed the original Dark Forces (with some graphical enhances) and that was a ton of fun. Some of those 90s Sierra and Lucasarts games are really terrific. 😃

I have a idea for a Fanedit For a Half-life Movie. by Mixing
Children of Men, War of the Worlds (2005) , Cloverfield, Godzilla (2015) , District 9, Equilibrium, Starship Troopers, Chappie, Rakka and
Some of the Half-life Fan Films, Audio and Music from the Games. and Perhaps Some Stock Footage and New VFX and Nearly Shot Scenes.

How would you include scenes that hadn’t been shot? Story board?
