RE: Editing / jumps between the three sequences of ROTJ’s climax.

I recently listened to a Rian Johnson podcast where he spoke about editing TLJ

Why would you use TLJ as a source for editing tips? I don’t want this to turn into a slag off session of TLJ but apart of some question plot decisions (Leia flying), the editing department was what really let the movie down.
Now I liked the climactic battle between Ray, Kylo and the guards but I hated that every time I got invested in it, it cut away. If you are going to cut from a tense moment, it’s best to cut to another tense moment and keep going back and forth regularly to give a sense of urgency. Other wise you should leave it to play out in full, but that is less effective if the situation is meant to be a climax, as it makes it makes it appear to happen sequentially rather than concurrently.

Oh my god, thanks so much for your valuable insight. What would adywan have done without you? Thought that TLJ was good? Try to change ROTJ to be better? You’re a real hero!

The rude sarcasm seems a bit uncalled for.

Agree to disagree!

This just doesn’t seem the thread for someone’s hot takes on a movie that isn’t the movie being discussed here.

He was using said movie to explain his position on re-editing the movie being discussed here. It wasn’t off topic and was directly responding to the discussion. There’s no need to be rude because someone doesn’t share your subjective opinion.

Disagree.

JEDIT: To clarify, I disagree with your assessment of what he was doing. Or certainly how he managed to do it.

Darth Vader is Luke’s dad.

OK, now that the discussion of off topic discussion has gone off topic. I need to lie down…

You and I are advocating the same thing.

Adywan is adding to ROTJs three-sequence climax (and likely removing a bit too), he will have a decision to make about how to incorporate the B-Wing sequence and perhaps other newly shot footage as well. He did do some editorial re-ordering of the Kenobi hovel in SW:R (improving it imho) but whether or not he’d want to reorder ROTJ to make the final act a little less choppy I don’t know. I saw on facebook that he apologised for being so quiet, due to internet problems, but hopefully when normal service resumes he can come back and update us a bit on his plans.

I really loved how ESB:R was the theatrical version with improved effects. Any thoughts on making a purist version of ROTJ:R and ANH:R HD?

I’m not sure if anyone’s already suggested this (I haven’t exactly been reading this forum regularly), but here’s an idea I have: Anakin’s death feels kind of out of place in the tail end of the Battle of Endor. It’s an emotional, quiet scene, but as soon as it’s done we jump right back into high paced excitement and heroic triumph. The two tones clash and it always felt a bit jarring to me.

So what if instead it were made so Anakin died on the shuttle after it had already escaped the Death Star? Then we transition back to Han and Leia on Endor and any celebration there that might happen, then have the ending Adywan described (Luke burning his father’s body alone as the Jedi ghosts look on).

That actually sounds pretty awesome, I’d love to see that in the edit. The only hitch is how difficult it might be for Adywan to pull off, he could probably do it but it would take even more time and effort.

Another question for Ady when he gets Internet service back:

Concerning the Star Wars Rebels finale:

Now that we know who does and doesn’t survive Star Wars Rebels, do you have any plans to insert [spoiler] into the battle? Rex is already on Endor, retconned as White Bearded Rebel (not a spoiler - that was suggested in March 2016 and all but confirmed in April 2017).

They told me they’d fixed it!

I haven’t watched it yet, and decided to read this thread and was almost spoiled. Could you guys please spoiler tag that?

I did! Now no one knows what someone did to Rex.

If any references are made I’d rather them be subtle, back-background one. We don’t want to end up with the special editions or Rogue One again.

Oh and also HelloGreedo brought up an excellent point about the Han Rescue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhvDfkQK2gQ
Any ideas on how that can be “solved”/made less flimsy?
