It wasn’t supposed to be a Netflix movie. There was a fight with the two producers, one of which wanted to edit the movie to be more accessible, the other wanted to keep it as is. The compromise was keep it as is, but sell international distribution rights to Netflix to guarantee a return on investment.

So it’s theatrical in the US, but Netflix a week later everywhere else.

FINE!!!

I’ll get my own Netflix movie with the hookers and liquor and whatever else is in that quote, and forget all of it.

Napoleon Dynamite > Nacho Libre

Equivalent of saying Conquest of the Planet of the Apes > Battle For the Planet of the Apes

Yes, Conquest is good. Battle is not.

Lady Bird (2017) - 8/10

There was a free screening in town, and I went kinda last minute. It worked really well for me. If I was any older or younger when this came out, I probably wouldn’t care about it, but it was good timing.

Nice to see you enjoyed it. I also find it very nice. One of the plot threads felt a little cliche but the core of the movie was about her relationship with her mother which was very interesting and touching. Overall, it’s a very genuine film with great acting and though it’s not my favorite of the year, I’d be fine with it taking home Best Picture. I just can’t accept Shape of Water winning.

I mean of course, whatever wins will win, I just find Shape of Water overrated. Not nearly as much as Darkest Hour which has no place in the nominations whatsoever in my opinion. I find CMBYN or Three Billboards deserving of the award. If they nominated BR 2049 then I’d give it to that in a heartbeat.

I agree Darkest Hour is really the only one there that shouldn’t be in the conversation. I wasn’t as in love with Shape of Water as many people were but I liked it at least as much as Three Billboards.

After having seen every Best Picture winner, I’ve come to find satisfaction in the small victories, because I know 9 times out of 10 my favorite movie won’t win (or even be nominated). This year, the little victory - if Shape of Water wins - would be that it’s a kind of movie that’s pretty out there for the Academy (sci-fi fantasy fish romance drama thriller). There isn’t really any little victory to be had for Three Billboards except that I liked it. So, in the race between the two, I’m Shape of Water all the way (not to mention it’s a passion project for Del Toro, a director I admire who might not be in the conversation again anytime soon).

For the record…

  1. Dunkirk
  2. Phantom Thread
  3. The Post
  4. Get Out
  5. Lady Bird
  6. Call Me By Your Name
  7. The Shape of Water
  8. Three Billboards
  9. Darkest Hour

What a Way to Go! - This was amazing.

I don’t go to movie theatres, and almost nothing that came out this year interested me.

Haven’t seen It yet. Waiting for both parts to be out, preferably both in extended cuts (either interwined or as two films).

You saw one movie this year, and it was It.

It was better than any movie I’ve seen in theaters in the last four years. Granted, all I’ve seen have been a couple Marvel movies and a couple Star Wars movies, and I hated all of them.

Yikes, ok then.

In fairness, It was one of the better films of 2017.

Was it? Ok, I’ll take your word on that.

I doubt it was one of the better films in the last four years. I also doubt it was better than any of the three Disney Star Wars movies. Or Guardians of the Galaxy. Off the top of my head.
