Star Trek: Discovery (Season 1)
Well, I finally finished it. It felt like someone commandeered the series in the last third and did a major course correct. Had the entire season been as solid as the last third, the major departures in design might have been more forgivable. They nailed the execution of the Vulcans, Andorians, Orions, even the Tellarites! But they just had to royally screw up the Klingons.

As it stands, the last third just cannot make up for the rest of the season. And while I’m interested to see where they go from here, it’s still not a series I can recommend. But it is nice that it finally found its moral center and adopted Starfleet’s ideals in the end.

Interesting. the last third is the exact part I haven’t seen yet.

Is that a tumbleweed or a dead Tribble? 😉

Whatever it is, it’s definitely a huge success, and not at all a puzzling mess 😃

Discovery is the worst Star Trek show so far (imho). Let’s just hope it will be like TNG, where the first season was pretty bad, but it got slightly better during the second season, and really great during the third one

So, it’s okay to publicly like Voyager now? 😛

I’m really proud this thread isn’t a giant bitch session about how Discovery Changed Things Now It Sucks. We may be growing up as a forum.

Is Discovery even worth watching? I haven’t taken a look at it but I suspect the worst.

Oh, never mind.

Didn’t Trek already change things enough times and disappoint enough times that STD doesn’t move the scale that much?

The best thing I can say is that 99.99% of the visual effects look great. And I like one character, maybe even 2 and after seeing each episode twice I remember the names of at least a third of the characters.

Actually not really. They have done some minor makeup changes through the years, but they were surprisingly pretty consistent over the years, with not really that many inconsistencies.

Is it really so important that other people approve of you for what TV shows you like?

Also, I’d wager many people who hate Voyager haven’t really seen much of it. It might have issues, but if you’re willing to overlook them, it’s pretty good.

YES. I NEED VALIDATION FROM OTHERS TO KNOW I’M NOT A WEIRDO FREAKO.

In case that wasn’t clear, that was not meant to be taken seriously, just like SilverWook’s original post.

Not for any reason you’d like or hope.

It is worth an autopsy, though, so if cutting corpses up is your thing, DSC comes highly recommended.

The show is still salvageable, but not easily so. Actually, the main reason why I think that’s the case is that DSC is bad to the point where you can’t even consider it an honest attempt at a… thing. Whatever they wanted it to be. You can’t even tell easily what that was - beyond a launch pad for a streaming service, that is.

It’s badly written, the characters almost never do, tell instead, proclaim all their motivations aloud, and when the scripts actually do try and rely on action to tell the story you really wish they didn’t - with very few exceptions that feel almost accidental.

On the whole it’s extremely unfocused - kinda episodic, kinda serialized, in fact it throws the worst elements of the two into a blender. On the few occasions it tries to be a Star Trek show it almost gives you the impression it’s resentful in doing so. It also takes until after the mid-season break to even start feeling remotely cohesive, and for its finale it elects to do a pratfall.

In other words: it is interesting. Fascinating, even.

A completely off-topic question - does anybody know if there is a chance how to get the bits where William Shatner appeared as James T. Kirk in uniform at the Oscars with Seth McFarlane? I remember it was on youtube years ago, but I can’t find it, probably for copyright reasons. Or was it released officially or something?
