Info Wanted: The 1997 Special Edition on DVD?

 (Edited)

I figured this post belonged here since this is in regards to yet another version of Star Wars that will never see the light of day thanks to the genius of GL. I’ve been looking for a set of the 1997 Special Editions on DVD but have not been able to find one? I recently gave copies of my TR47 and EditDroid sets to a friend and he asked if I know were I could get the 1997 SE’s because he would like to remember Star Wars in all of it incarnations. The only set I know of is the FIVE STAR release but I have been unable to find it anywhere. I don’t know if there are any other preservation versions of the 1997 editions but I would certainly be interested in any information that can be provided about them. Also, if anyone out there knows where I can aquire a set of the FIVE STAR DVD’s or another equal, or better, 1997 SE preservation set then please PM me. I don’t like the SE’s but I do feel that they as well should be preserved on DVD, even if it is just to show our children what we had to put up with back in the day.

The best 1997 SE DVDs are from French DVB. They've recently been posted in a.b.sw. Might still be available with a decent commercial server.

The creator of that set wished them to be known as the "TB Release" and they are rather nice.

The other decent set is the German GKar Trilogy.

The Five Star set is sub-standard to both of these in both DVD9 and DVD5 versions.

Usually found going cheap on good old ebay............

I've joined a SE Preservation Project a few weeks ago, We have yet to "name" the set but hold tight more detais to come!

We should have it done in about 2 weeks or so and uploaded on MYSPLEEN once it's done!

The original DVD5 versions of the SEs that I have are ok; certainly better than the 5 Star editions. For starters, the 5.1 audio isn't screwed on Empire (as it was with the 5 Star set) and the prints appear to be slightly better. They certainly did me before I got hold of the Dr. Gonzo set and the official DVDs.

So what does one have to do to go about getting into this stuff. My computer isn't that great but I'd love to start collecting/trading DVD's. Any sugestions.

Figure out how to use Usenet. All the good stuff is posted to a.b.starwars. You can also figure out how to use torrents, but Usenet is better.

As long as you have a good news provider (which, sadly, I don't).

Then get one. If you're serious about collecting, a premium server is a must.

I don't think it matters all that much. There are several good ones. I use Giganews, but that's only really because their deal seemed to be the best at the time I signed up. Easynews is what my brother uses, and he's quite happy there. I think Easynews has a web interface that you can use to make downloads easier, but I've never really looked into it. Any of these commercial servers will probably give you all the Usenet you need for something like $10 to $15US per month. For me (and, I'd submit, for any dedicated archivist), that's well worth it.

I'm not that bothered about downloading, which is why I don't pay for a 'proper' server. I have the original, SE and 2004 release on DVD nd those will do me. I know someone who's making a new version of the OT from LD, so I'll wait and see what those turn out like.

Oh my God Rik, you are my hero. I have been looking for The 97 SE versions on DVD forever. Funny how today when my family were going through boxes looking for things to sell, we found the tapes, and I got them.
Rock. Nirvana. Awsomeness.

Uhh... where? 'Cause there have been three people in this thread who have pointed out that there are at least three versions available already, and they're all from DVB caps rather than LD. Why aren't any of those people your hero, for pointing out so many versions that already exist?

Not to disparage Rikter's new efforts, but I'd really like to read how a new version will be any better than what's already available.

This would be why...

The “GKar” Edition = Great set BUT has a Deutsch title-crawl, real cool and all and it's great preservation of the German set but not the SE LD's that I have.

HK "5-Star Collection" DVD9 Edition = This is a sweet set BUT its Dual Layer and it's NOT a very cheap set to share or copy for others as they do require Dual Layer media and they (asian DVD9's) are getting harder to buy as the asian "suppliers" have replaced them with DVD9 silvers of the real DVD's (that and the shrunk quality really sucks!)

The HK "LOOK" DTS Edition = shot DTS audio, tinny DD audio and the colors are screwy with every side change.

REIVAX = Only has ANH so far and French subtitles over the crawl (correct?)

What about the REIVAX set or whatever it is called, is it actually one of those mentioned or something else altogether?

I've heard good things about shemes.com Usenet service (the maker of the free binary newsreader "Grabit"). Not only do you get Usenet access, but you also get access to an automatic newsgroup indexing service which means that you can search all the newsgroups without having to rely on "human" indexing services like newzbin.com.

General Gravos mentioned it up above ^^^
I think REIVAX isn't a set but only ANH, with French subs over the crawl

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Why doesn't anyone read the early posts? The second post in this thread (by me) tells you that there's a version from French DVB that rocks. A subsequent post tells you it's the TB release (which I can confirm). And I'll tell you now that it's crawl in English, dialogue in English, no subs (at all). It's SE near-perfection.

Time
Since it sounds like the French "TB" release of the SE set is the best available release if anyone knows where I might acquire a copy of this set, preferably a hard copy via donation or trade, please PM with the relevant info.
