One interpretation I’ve seen is that that particular location might have had particularly high levels of force surrounding it which would make “force ghosts” more dense and powerful there.

I actually hope that Yoda’s force ghost effects are left untouched. Force Ghosts always grow to look more real as the person seeing them gets more powerful in the Force. In ANH, all Luke can interact with is a voice, in ESB, it’s a faint, fleeting vision, and after his Dagobah training, the ghosts become much more solid and able to interact with things, or in Obi-Wan’s case, sit down. So it’s a good progression that in TLJ, the Force Ghosts may as well be living beings, as Luke has only gotten more powerful.

If you don’t feel like learning After Effects someone else (like me perhaps) will do that scene eventually. But you could try anyway, I think I have an idea of how to do it so I can give some tips if you’d like.

Tips would be highly appreciated! I want to learn After Effects.

It would be funny if I finished Firestorm and the credits went:

Not a big deal. It’s pretty much what happened with Hal9000’s TFA Restructured and we’re all very grateful for the work everyone put in it!

Collaborative edits are a great thing though! 😉

I’ll hop over to your TLJ edit thread and share my tips there.

Just watched TLJ for the second time. Didn’t hate it quite as much as I did the first time. I feel like I need to know what deleted scenes will be available, and what happens in next movie before attempting an edit

Were you forced to watch it again?

So I get you probably liked TLJ, which is fine and it is your opinion. This thread is specifically for people who didn’t like certain aspects of it and would like to see it changed, even if just for themselves if nothing else. So do you need to come in here and just shit on random comments? I’ve seen at least a few comments now of you just getting on people for not loving it like you apparently do. Go to some other thread where you can circlejerk about how awesome it is, if that is your thing.

I believe a few things need to be changed:

1 – No DJ, Rose, or Canto Bight – I truly believe we are adding too many characters and not developing them enough.
2 – Luke dying needs to be the ending, rather than the slave boy.
3 – The Yoda scene was rather awkward, and confused the lore on how Force Ghosts could interact with the universe.
4 – Remove the porgs, for the most part.
5 – Give Snoke a line of dialogue about his backstory, but keep the momentum of the throne room scene.
6 – Maybe remove the line about Rey’s parents, but I am fine either way.
7 – Change the title of the movie to remove the word ‘Jedi’ altogether.

While I have some big problems with TLJ, I’ve complied a list of small changes that would be super easy to edit but go a long way. I only wrote down ones that haven’t been suggested yet (to my knowledge).

  1. Remove Rey’s parentage reveal. This had been set up so well in TFA, it should has been saved for a dramatic moment. As of now the answer just gets blurted out by Kylo after so much buildup, not to mention the reveal is kinda disappointing. By pushing off the parent reveal until Ep 9 (which could be added in as a dream or into another Rey/Kylo confrontation) the film would feel less anti-TFA, keep Rey interesting, and give audiences a reason to see 9.

  2. Remove Captain Phasma. Honest to god what did Starkiller Base accomplish? How did everyone get off in time? Phasma is shoved into this movie for no reason and then she dies (supposedly). Cut the fight and escape (we can think Finn+Rose died with the lightspeed attack, and then we will feel the relief Poe feels). As for the shots before with her, recolor her red stripe blue and put a voice filter / dub to imply this is another, male first order captain. A line with “captain ____” could help.

  3. Leia is sick. Leia’s first “death” on the bridge is brilliant. Kylo doesn’t pull the trigger, but events have spiraled out of his control and he has no choice. You don’t play with the dark side, the dark sides plays with you. Now I’m not a fan of her return, but she is instrumental to the story plus the scene with Luke is great. How about instead the bridge attack severely injures the general and she only has a couple days to live. This could be enforced by a dubbed medic and Leia coughing offscreen moving forward. The resistance’s situation would be even more dire, Leia would be written off for 9, and Kylo’s attack now has a significant meaning.

  4. Replace Canto Bight with Tatooine. Before you start screaming let me explain. After the galaxy learned that Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi who defeated the Emperor and Vader, had humble beginnings on Tatooine tourists began to flock there. In the wake of Jabba’s death casinos started up and eventually an artificial ocean was created. After 30 years Tatooine has become unrecognizable, with the entire planet having switched to the tourism industry. This fits perfectly into the theme of “Luke as a legend” and “letting the past die”, and has some real world ties to Orlando. Plus it gives us another (but new) look at the desert planet, which is essential to the Skywalker Saga. Lastly the final scene has a whole new meaning- as Luke dies a new child looks up into the Tatooine sky in hopes to someday become a great Jedi. This would be super easy to edit- Canto Bight is actually the name of the city, the planet is Cantonica. So maybe a loudspeaker could announce “Welcome to Canto Bight, the jewel of Tatooine”.

These changes, plus trimming some scenes to cut on the runtime, would solve a majority of my problems with the film.

A few other ideas, if they haven’t been stated before:

  1. Remove references to “Three Lessons” and have Rey already sitting on the stone when Luke is giving the first lesson. This can imply at least a little more training than what we see. This could probably work even if the third lesson is restored from the deleted scenes.

  2. Another poster had already posted a good solution to the “Ben, no!” situation by combining elements. But if one wants to keep the rhythm of the three flashbacks: Show the first flashback as theatrical, but use the “saber crossing” version of “Ben, no!”… Second flashback stays as theatrical… Third flashback removes Luke’s thoughts of killing Kylo and igniting his saber, but the rest remains, thus it appears Luke is quickly igniting his saber merely to defend himself.

  3. Before I saw TLJ, I enjoyed this upbeat TV spot, featuring Finn’s “May the force be with you.” It’s really nice out-of-context:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj9qejqPNV4
In the finished film, we see Finn’s just saying it to get rid of Rose. Finn doesn’t move much in this shot, so it could be possible to move it to a different place in the film with a rotoscoped background if one would like to see Finn saying it more sincerely to someone.

  4. BB-8’s whack-a-mole at the beginning could be altered to be less OTT. The first shot could have BB-8 lowering himself down and looking around for the problem. Second shot could have BB-8 locate the problem, probe the sparking area once, then digitally add some electrical tendrils to the probe so BB-8 gets cooked a little, to explain why he’s still a little fried when he raises back up. Same joke, just a little less silly with no whack-a-mole and no headbutt.

  5. This would be tougher, but the early scene of Poe talking to Finn with the liquid spewing out of his suit is a bit silly. It would take some doing, but it may be possible to digitally remove the water streams, and perhaps the center audio channel could isolate out the streaming sounds.

As a person who really loved the movie and a lot of the themes that it tries to convey, I do think the film could be tighter and more cohesive to make it a smoother Star Wars experience.

  • Trim (not cut) the Hux and Poe phone call. If it’s shorter I think it could be effective humor.
  • Add deleted scene that happens right after “Where’s Rey?”. According to RJ that scene is basically Poe bringing Finn (and the audience) up to speed on what happened in 7 and the fact that Rey went to Luke’s island to fetch the last Jedi. Then BB8 shows Finn a hologram of Rey’s “we’ll see each other again” moment, which basically ignites Finn motivations. Why this crucial establishing moment was cut? I do not know.
  • Cut from Rey’s “I’m not leaving without you” to her following Luke up the mountain and sensing the Jedi temple. As much as I like the Luke’s daily routine sequence, it can be a real pace killer and it just demystifies Luke a little too much. His character is a question mark at this point and that sequence just answers questions we never asked.
  • Maybe trim some of Leia’s space walking. I know it’s kinda corny but I personally don’t mind it too much. She’s in Zero G so the amount of force she requires to pull her weightless body can’t be too much anyways.
  • Add more SW wipes during the intercutting between planets.
    Restructuring of Canto Bight:
  • As Finn and Rose jump into hyperspace follow their storyline all the way until to when they arrive at the Casino.
  • MOVE UP BB8 getting slotted with coins to after “This place is awesome” Then cut to Rose describing the codebreaker they have to find and we wipe to Rey talking with Chewie in the falcon which precedes the second skype call with Kylo.
  • Wipe from Kylo’s hand to champagne popping in the Casino and the whole scene plays like it does.
  • Add third lesson. This scene should explain why Rey was so willing to fraternize with Kylo. She gets disappointed by Luke and looks for answers elsewhere. ie the cave and Ben.
  • Add wipe at the end of Yoda’s scene.
  • Maybe add deleted scene of fight between BB8 and BB9E, if anything just to make his action hero moment when he saves them with that AtSt have better context.
  • Remove chrome dome line. That was just a lame one liner.
  • Remove Rey’s “I like this!” when she’s shooting in the falcon. I think the cheer that preceded that line told us as much.
  • Remove the shot of the family portrait in the falcon as to not mislead the audience into thinking that the film is over. That way when the broom scene comes up it feels less like padding.

I think when we see the deleted scenes we’ll be able to tell what’s feasible and what’s not. I pray to God that they don’t have timecodes like the TFA ones.

Anyway, that’s just me.

Honestly those are some great changes my friend, except the BB8 BB9E fistfight (in my opinion)

But yeah, great stuff!

krlozdac, I like your outline. I feel like the film really doesn’t need to be drastically restructured, just trimmed here and there to tighten it, like you said.

There’s really nothing I seriously disagree with, but I do wonder what could be done with the Leia scene. I don’t have a problem with it myself, but there does seem to be an execution issue because it didn’t seem to work for a lot of people. Honestly, I think it is the initial shot of her starting to “fly” that throws people off. I don’t know what can be done, but I’d rather not anything be changed if a good solution isn’t introduced, because I think just trimming it could throw off the music. But hey, might be worth experimenting with once it becomes available just to see.

Daxtreme, I think your hesistation regarding the droid fight is understandable. It might be weird interrupting Finn and Phasma’s fight with a more comedic droid fight, but I can also understand how adding it back in might make BB8’s ATST hijack feel less out of nowhere. I initially felt just removing the ATST gag might be better and not include the droid fight either, but I guess we should wait and see the deleted scene first.

On another note, a YouTuber, EC Henry, posted this video earlier regarding some people’s issues with the Holdo plot. He basically suggests, like others have, that if Holdo felt that there was a spy on board the Raddus, it would better justify her not wanting to openly discuss her plan. Henry suggests an addition of just one line from Holdo that could’ve helped with this, but obviously we can’t get Laura Dern to record a new line. I wonder if there would be another way to accomplish this if people felt the idea could be useful. Here’s the video link:
https://youtu.be/sNpayCpXCFM

Alternatively, I thought maybe Poe and Holdo’s interactions could be trimmed to have Poe interrupt her once or twice, maybe giving the idea that Holdo might have done more to make Poe understand, but his impatience got in the way of that. This might be most useful in the scene where Poe knocks the chair over.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will release on 3/27, with the Digital/Movies Anywhere release set for 3/13.

Expect the first few fan-edits in the following few weeks, I suppose.

So, as one point in my “fix list” I have “fix Yoda’s face”. I think most of us agree that it was great to see the little puppet, but I’ve seen many say that there was something off about his look, which I agree with. I think it’s mostly due to the mouth which looks a bit different. So for my edit I’ll try to overlay and animate the correct Yoda mouth. Here’s a simple test image (original left, fixed right):

Looks good, Sir Ridley! I look forward to seeing different results. I was a little hesistant to change Yoda since he doesn’t look as bad in the trailer as I remember in theaters. But, this will still make a good learning experience in photoshop.

Looks good Ridley. It’s surprising how much of a difference that makes.

Oh yes, that’s wonderful! Fix the mouth as you’ve done and make him a little bit transparent and I think he’ll look perfect!

I feel like the biggest issue is the skin color is too dark, which shouldn’t be terribly hard to fix (seems like you’ve already adjusted it, though I wonder if you could go further). His eyes also seem to be a little too squinty, don’t know if that’s adjustable though.
