What instruments do you play?

Author

I haven’t made a thread here in what has to have been at least a year! Man, gone are the heydays of me making a new ranking thread every other day!

So anyway, which musical instruments do you play? Are you good at them? Any that you find particularly difficult? Any that you really want to learn?

I for one play acoustic guitar and the ukulele. I really want to start playing the bass guitar but at the moment I can’t afford the one that I want. What about you guys?

Great thread!

Trumpet - I played this back in elementary school and was pretty good at it. Only played it once or twice in the last decade and a half though, so I’m not good anymore.

Piano - because I know how to read music, I can go up to a piano and (eventually) figure out how to (poorly) play familiar melodies. Never had any lessons though so I don’t think you could really say I can play it.

Guitar/Mandolin - I know these are two different instruments, but to me they are the same, as in on a few occasions I’ve picked them up and strummed for a bit and tried to figure out notes and then gave up.

Guitar Hero - I was really good at Easy and Medium difficulty back when I used to play. Never could manage that fifth button though.

Rock Band - obviously guitar skills from the previous transfer over. I like to think that I am a great singer (though I’ve only ever sang to myself in the shower and in the car) so I was great at vocals. I really liked the drums and was pretty good on Easy but anything beyond that was too much.

Mayonnaise - is gross (except for a very tasteful little bit on a sandwich).

Trumpet. In high school I was great at it but haven’t played since so probably not now.

Guitar-Depending on the genre of music ranges from above average to professional level.

I was forced to try to learn the recorder in elementary school. I never took to it.

Man, I completely forgot about three instruments I used to play. From the age of five to nine I learnt keyboard at school, which is a part of my childhood I look back on in contempt. I really didn’t enjoy keyboard lessons. In year seven I played saxaphone for junior band, and then the next semester we had to swap to a strings instrument, I did violin. At the end of year seven we had to choose which we preferred, and I chose saxaphone, not because I enjoyed it more, but because all my friends chose their brass/woodwind instruments so I would be in their class. I quit music at the end of year eight, and I haven’t picked up a violin or a sax since.

Piano lessons as a kid, dropped them as soon as my parents caved in. (The whole ‘You have to stick with it at least two years thing’. So I had two years of that I guess)

Trumpet in middle School and high school.

Lots of singing in highschool, some stuff after college.

Nothing these days.

When I was 16, I took lessons from the bassist of a friend’s band. I never really learned to read sheet music fluently or got much into music theory, but my technique wasn’t too bad. I then played in the school band for the graduation party. The drummer of that band also asked me to play the Pink Panther theme with her percussion ensemble for a concert of the local musical association. A few months later, I performed a Blue Man Group inspired piece with some of them on a wedding. Then, I played with another drummer for a while and he started to bring in more people, but before this could go anywhere, I had to leave town to go to university. I didn’t have too much time since then, so I’m a bit out of practice.

I also bought a guitar at a point when I was somewhat happy with my bass skills, but never took lessons. I can do basically the same things I can do on my bass, but I always struggled with playing chords.

Guitar. I’m “good” compared to casual players like me, but absolutely bad compared to those possessed crazy guitarists. I can also play the drums even if I never properly “learned” how to, and I am also learning how to read music. I love singing too (even though I’m god awful at that) and I listen to music as much as I can.

My dad is a musician and my mother is an instrument teacher but I can’t play any instrument myself. I would like to be able to play piano, because you see, I’m one of them newfangled computer musicians so if I knew how to play piano I could record that playing into my computer.

I can still make music happen as I compose and produce everything “in the box” so in a way I play every instrument, and yet I play no instrument.

I would say my biggest strength is in editing and producing and mixing, so if any of you real musicians have songs recorded that are unfinished or just needs a bit of polish I wouldn’t mind having a look at them.

And wouldn’t it be cool if the forum musicians recorded a song together? Could be.

I can play the trumpet and the baritone, having played both in middle school and high school.
I have taken piano lessons, but not for very long so I’m a novice at best.

I do also sing rather well, and I currently sing in the choir at my church. I know that’s not technically an “instrument”, but I’m really quite good at it (and not in the you-think-you-sound-good-but-you-really-suck sort of way.) I sing baritone, which means my vocal range has some trouble with higher tenor and lower bass.

I want to learn to play guitar. At some point (probably sooner than later), I’m going to buy a starter kit and a copy of Rocksmith.

I think I learned the Recorder in school. A few times.
Learned the Ukulele in school.
Took some guitar lessons in high school, that became my main instrument for some years, I can still play it but I prefer the keyboards these days, no training with keyboards, I struggle with two hand coordination and chords but know enough to make a good recording which is a fun hobby. I should take piano lessons.
I would like to get a violin or cello and a trumpet or trombone to mess with some day.
I find that playing along to a random station on the radio and when the song is over switching to another station and repeating for an hour or two is the best way to learn.

I used to be good at the clarinet in middle school, but not anymore. I’m still capable of playing piano but not very good. I’m primarily a vocalist, and I’ve done pretty well at local competitions at solos. I used to be in a college quartet. However, these days I just sing around the house.

I can’t play squat.

However my wife is a casual musician (flute, piano, and guitar) and my older daughter has joined the elementary school band playing the flute. Younger daughter has been asking for piano lessons.

That slang confuses me because, why a clarinet? A trombone, maybe, but a clarinet? I know I’m overthinking a simple dirty slang term but it just sounds ignorant. Like, let’s pick a random instrument and never mind if it makes sense.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING

I’m saying the actions one takes with the mouthpiece and the motion of the hand would make more sense with something else, like a trombone. To pick a clarinet for that slang just seems so random as to be musically incompetent.

I’m saying that, as a musician, it confuses me. It sounds stupid more than dirty.
