Info & Help Wanted: Accurate English Subtitles for the GODZILLA franchise

I was thinking of this a whole back when I found out that a lot of the US releases of the Godzilla movies only have dubtitles included for both the Japanese and English cuts of some movies, now there have been a fair number of accurate or close to accurate subs in some releases but overall it’s pretty mixed, what I was wondering was if their was a project that translated the original Japanese subtitles into English, if not would there be a way to get the Japanese sub tracks and translate then accurately ? I know there are programs that do that sort of thing automatically anyway just was wondering

Considering that there are multiple different groups of people dedicated to making what’s called “fansubs” for anime… from the translation to the typing them out, to matching up the timing on the screen of when to show them…
I don’t think what you’re looking for can be done with automation. And a straight translation for Japanese subtitles if you have them, to the English translation would not be that understandable.

Now there is the issue of different versions of said films and even if you found a fansub group for the Godzilla franchise, you would have to make sure the you had the correct corrosponding version of the film so the subtitles made sense.
And most projects I’ve seen on myspleen are the English dubs not to many subbed versions. So you may be out of luck. But hopefully if someone knows anything about something similar to what you’re looking for, they’d be on here. So best of luck!

I know Molly on here has mentioned that she works on fansubs of the Detective Conan anime. I don’t know if she still does, but she might know more, or have an idea of who you can contact. 😃

I can tell you that the recent Return of Godzilla DVD (Kraken) doesn’t have “dubtitles”.

Man, that English dub is really, really awful >__<

The only accurate translation for King Kong vs. Godzilla is the one from the German DVD.

The old VDK bootleg subs for most of these movies are either guesswork garbage or modified dubtitles, and King Kong vs. Godzilla’s familiar boot script is the most egregious example.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Which version of the film is it?

It’s a 576-line upscale of the already shitty old '91 LD/the 2001 DVD (the Japanese version)

Subs are obviously German but even those translated back to English actually convey what’s being said.

Which German DVD?

The 2013 Anolis Entertainment DVD.

Here’s an example of the subs from those translated to English compared against the bootleg subtitles:

Some sources for sub translations for the Heisei and Millennium flicks that AREN’T dubtitles are the Australian Madman DVDs and the Hong Kong Universe Laser DVDs.

The Universe Laser DVDs I’d be a little wary of because some look like they’re translated from the Cantonese dub back to English (the new Kraken subs for RoG are a HUGE improvement), but the Madman ones (namely vs Mothra) seem accurate.

The subbed copies that Janus/Criterion are using for their Showa titles are improvements over the Classic Media ones, too.
