It bugs me how many people want to strip all humor out of Star Wars.

Yes, The Last Jedi had some attempts at humor that went too far. But instead of completely taking out those lines, perhaps just trim them a little. For example, the infamous “your mom” joke that Poe makes was too much in my opinion, but I was okay with him joking for a moment saying that he was on hold for Hux. Cut it there.

I didn’t mind “big ass door” or Luke winking. I will say that I thought his brushing off the shoulder wasn’t really appropriate, but again — don’t take out all humor. Give us a good balance.

I agree, but then again everyone would take out different bits. I like the shoulder brush, for example.

I don’t think it’s the humor itself that’s the problem, but rather that it was presented in such a way that it disrupts the narrative and emotional flow of certain scenes. The Poe’s “your mom” joke and Luke’s lightsaber toss feel out of place in otherwise dramatic scenes. Personally I think the humor level in TFA was just right most of the time (except for “so who talks first”). And I agree that not all of TLJ’s humor should be cut.

Good idea, but if the only thing we know is that Luke got his saber back we’re gonna wonder why he doesn’t have his saber.

In Force Awakens, we never see Luke accept the lightsaber. Even in The Last Jedi, we know from watching that Luke throws it and Rey picks it up again to practice with later. Perhaps the saber toss scene is not needed. Rey just holds onto the blue one.

As for the humor, it doesn’t feel right to remove every joke, quip, sight gag, and gesture. The movie should be tonally consistent with moments of levity, not a joyless slog.

I think the saber toss might be needed if you keep the end of TFA as it is. She so desperately stretches the saber towards Luke that it might seem odd to just have her keep it with no explanation. I’d keep the saber toss.

As for jokes, I would personally remove or trim about 13 of them. Poe tooling, BB-8 head smash, milk face, seen your routine, everything you said, tickling Rey (trim), coin shooting, two Finn lines from the fathier chase, iron, Finn’s reaction to BB-8 AT-ST, cowl, big ass door. I think that still leaves most of the fun intact.

The problem with that is that every faneditor will remove different jokes.

Less is more in this case. Cut only the jokes you are absolutely certain that are ruining the flow of the story at that point.

The your mom joke comes to mind here, this scene is supposed to be TENSE, but it… isn’t, mostly because of that terrible joke. It even manages to lessen the stakes of Rose’s sister’s sacrifice right after.

But you know, fanediting a movie is about making it what you believe it should be like, so yeah… ultimately, the choice is everyone’s 😃

Right. I don’t want to cut jokes because I hate fun, I want to cut the specific jokes that for me personally took something away from the movie. Jokes that are distracting or don’t fit for some other reason. I saw the movie with a friend who laughed at almost all the jokes and personally I found most of the humor funny as well so I want to keep most of it.

Has anybody mentioned removing the opera singer? Because that’s seriously my only issue with the movie.

SirRidley I think your joke cutlist is pretty good by the way

Most of them seem quite out of place when you really think about it

That’s probably the only gag that I would cut.
Well that and the BB-ST.

Exactly.

I think it’s important to keep the humour in but for me it’s the tone inconsistencies that pull me out of the film even when the humours done right. If I’m supposed to believe Luke has cut himself off from the force because he has lost faith in the Jedi as well as himself and that on top of that he has just found out his best friend was murdered by the apprentice he caused to turn to the dark side, im not sure levity of his making is appropriate. I like the caretakers gags, the R2 watch the language, but the Jakku is nowhere and the reed for me don’t fit Luke’s character tone for this part of his arc. I WANT Luke to be grumpy, depressed, destroyed, this is how we feel when we see him at his lowest and makes his return at the end so impactful. I don’t personally like the dust off or the wink at C3PO either but these don’t effect the tone too much. All the BB 8 gags, the iron (which is a hardware Wars reference), even the stupid opera balloon dog lady don’t bother me because they are light moments meant for kids that don’t affect the tone.

The only other tone moments I find jarring but that actually fit the characters frame of reference I would remove, is the lightsaber toss and the end of the hux/Poe interaction.

I think a minimal edit can easily improve this film (which i really like) one point up making it an 8/10 for me.

The reed is maybe the best/most important joke in the movie from a character/story perspective.

Close second is the lightsaber toss.

Interesting. I feel like the reed joke goes on a bit too far at the expense of Rey, making her look stupid and making Luke look mean as he says “wow, you must be really strong with the force”. I would want to shorten it a bit. What are your thoughts on it?

I’d try to tone down Hux in general, take out most of the ‘AotC R2/3PO’ BB-8 moments, but I guess that’s about it? The first scene REALLY bothered me. I thought it was a joke at first. Like, an actual joke, that the cinema wasn’t playing the actual movie, and that was some sort of TV spot. It was one of the least Star Wars-y things for me in the whole movie. Took me out completely. I wouldn’t take any of the ones with Luke and Rey out though. Maybe the one about the busy day, but I don’t think so. I’d have to give it another watch in order to make an actual cutlist though, I haven’t watched it in over a month.

I agree it’s funny, but important from a character/story perspective? You mean showing Reys naivety? I’m not sure what else you could mean, but I’d be interested to hear what you think.

With the light saber toss, this one fits the character at that time and the story, but I just didn’t like the choice. If he had simply dropped it, or even not taken it at all and just walked by her I would have preferred that. Throwing over his shoulder just didn’t work for me. So much so that I don’t even know if it’s supposed to be funny? People laughed in my theatre so I presume so but I just found it really jarring.

Oh I see, you were being sarcastic. I couldnt tell because you weren’t specific enough with your wording.

I didn’t realise we couldn’t discuss WHY we were editing and the reasons we individually don’t like certain scenes/elements. I will in future save that for the general discussion forums.

I don’t think it makes her look stupid at all. She legitimately doesn’t know what the force is or how it works (and I don’t blame her, considering). Luke doesn’t seem mean there (to me at least), he’s just teasing a bit.

Well that but also the scene is important for Luke to prove that the force is not just a simple power you have and can harness by merely reaching out your hand. It’s much deeper than that.

With the light saber toss, this one fits the character at that time and the story, but I just didn’t like the choice. Not that that matters, but basically everyone in my theater laughed. I thought it was funny. It definitely has comedic timing. But the joke isn’t “haha it’s so wacky that he throws it over his shoulder.” The joke is the subversion of what you expect, how Luke takes this object that was treated with such reverence by everyone else and just chucks it away. It’s more like “ha, wow, he just did that didn’t he.” It tells us a lot about where Luke is right off the bat.

Yes, I’m well aware. But thanks for the tip.

I just think it’s funny when someone says it fits the character and they were 99% there but they didn’t do it exactly the way I would have done it so it’s jarring.

Carry on, you guys do what you do.
