Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - cool movie, had the potential to be the best Harry Potter franchise movie, but failed because of a confusing plot. I really liked the characters and the part of the story where they’re looking for the lost creatures in New York, and really liked the chemistry between the characters. Unfortunately I didn’t like the Obscurus part of the plot, and honestly it felt like it belonged in a completely different movie, given the huge tone discrepancy between it and the other subplots.

Edit: I liked how it portrayed the US as super conservative 😉

That, and the whole movie looked like a cartoon.

I agree with you both and I was most put off by the generic action movie ending.

How I felt about Iron Man.

Fantastic beasts was a terrible film. Saw it show up on Amazon prime or Netflix or something and gave it a watch. I don’t think I finished it.

Seems like a bunch of big-name actors we’re excited by the idea of being in the next Harry Potter franchise. CGI was pretty terrible and the film relied heavily upon it. But that’s just what I remember I have no intention of seeing it again to determine if my accusations are just.

Blade Runner 2049
I had no interest in seeing this. I dig the original, but have no need or even want for a sequel. The Lady of the manor wanted to watch, and tonight was the night.
I had no faith at all in it and she had very little (She’s not quite as curmudgeonly as I).
Well, we loved it. Ain’t that a kick.

And I’m about to watch this movie I was sure I’d hate for the second time already.

As far as next movie seen goes, my local theater finally got The Shape of Water, so I’ll be going to see that in a couple hours.

Beautiful film. Same ending as Pan’s Labyrinth, but a beautiful film.

Had a Christopher Nolan double feature of The Prestige and Interstellar this weekend. Now, The Prestige has been a favorite of mine since it came out, more on the strength of its tone, cast and production design than on it’s admittedly sort of preposterous story, but I was really knocked out by Interstellar, which I haven’t seen since its 2014 release. I get the sense that a lot of folks think it’s kind of middling Nolan, but after this viewing I really think it might be my favorite. It hits a lot of sweet spots for me.

Other than that, I watched A Hard Day’s Night while more than a little drunk on Friday, after listening to Ken Jennings talk about it on the Movie Crush podcast at work. I picked up the Criterion blu-ray of it a few months ago but hadn’t gotten to it yet. Sweet Christ is that ever a beautiful transfer.

As far as next movie seen goes, my local theater finally got The Shape of Water, so I’ll be going to see that in a couple hours.

Interstellar and The Prestige are my favorite Nolan movies, followed closely by Dunkirk, Inception and The Dark Knight. I still have to watch Memento. Is it any good?

Memento is great.

Interstellar is overrated though.

Of his non-Bat-movies, I’ve only seen Following and Dunkirk, the latter being better than the former.

People tend to criticize the third act a lot, and while I agree that the whole Matt Damon part wasn’t the highlight of the movie, it’s not as bad as it’s made out to be imo.

Ok, so I think we’ve proven it’s properly rated.

Which is to say it’s fine. Not great, not terrible.

I think I’d give it 8 sober Barneys, maybe 9.

Boggy Creek II (MST3K)

This might be the first film I’ve ever seen that was actually made in my home state, and its characters are from the university I’ll probablt be attending this fall. Of course…

*screams*

I hear Crenshaw is the new team mascot. 😉

 (Edited)

The Phantom Menace (1999)

Really boring but the best of the three prequels. Blu-Ray Commentary was genuinely interesting.

6/10

.

Memento (2000)

Really really engaging. Especially on a second watch.

9/10

.

Dunkirk (2017)

It’s not a war movie. There are no characters, however the audience is a character. A compelling one at that.

8.5/10

.

Interstellar (2014)

Weird. Some of the most awe-inspiring visual effects/sound design I’ve ever seen.

8/10

.

The Truman Show (1998)

Went in knowing nothing. Left very depressed.

10/10

I haven’t seen Memento in about 12 years. I have no idea whether it’s better than Interstellar or not. I just really love Interstellar.

It’s still good, but it’s not.
