Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 131

Last Christmastime, I sat down and watched the whole Holiday Special with three boys aged 8 to 13 that we were babysitting. An unironic good time was had by all. Everyone was engaged from start to finish, which is a little unusual for them.
The night gave rise to a few in-jokes based off the film and our nonsensical commentary.

10/10, would watch again

My stance on revising fan edits.

I’m shocked that anyone could ever sit through the entire Holiday Special. I think I might have made it through five or ten minutes at the most.

I watch it on YouTube all the time. Bea Arthur is great. It’s definitely better than the prequels and special editions. No, that’s not hyperbole. There is nothing in the Holiday Special worse than jar-jar or that Jedi rocks musical crap.

No, it’s not better than the prequels or SEs.

Art is objective, not subjective.

Okay. The Holiday Special is objectively not art.

Many artisans died to bring us the disturbing Bacca family.

I showed my nephew the Boba Fett short story and he liked it a lot (well, he’s 5 and his favorite SW is the one where we can see the most troopers as possible… so it’s AotC 😦 )

(if I’m not mistaken, TSWHS is non canon but the Boba Fett animated short was on the bluray set and then is canon ?)

Am I the only one with ROTS in dead last?

Nope. I am in the same boat as well. For me the prequels degraded with every new incarnation. I hated a lot in TPM, but at least it retained a filmic look and had some surprises and remnants of some fairy tale vibe. ROTS lost a lot when the Anakin plot went the route that everybody suspected beforehand. We knew too much having seen the OT before.

That was the best thing about TLJ. That it played with our expectations a lot.

Possible ranking:

  1. Empire
  2. Star Wars
  3. The Force awakens
  4. The last Jedi or Return of the Jedi (have to watch TLJ again)
  5. the other one of those
  6. Rogue One
  7. The Phantom Menace
  8. Attack of the Clones
  9. ROTS

I did’t like the casino “cantina“ which did’t feel like Star Wars at all. If that was moved to a Men in Black movie, it wouldn’t feel out of place there. So probably Return of the Jedi will win.

“People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians”

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” --George Lucas on March 3, 1988

I don’t understand all this misguided appreciation for the Holiday Special.

I guess I have finally made up my mind.

  1. Star Wars
  2. Empire
  3. The Last Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Return of the Jedi
  6. Rogue One
  7. TPM
  8. AOTC
  9. ROTS

TLJ is the first Star Wars movie since Empire, where I wouldn’t change a single thing. Not because I love every single scene, but rather because I love where these scenes lead to and I have no idea how to get there, when I were to change them.
I was a bit torn whether to put RO above or below ROTJ, but overall, I think Jedi’s highs compensate its lows enough to put it above RO, which has neither very strong highs nor lows.

Ceci n’est pas une signature.

Me neither, it’s not so bad it’s good, it’s not charming, it’s not harmless fun, it’s definitely not better than the prequels. It’s just awful.

Not enough people read the EU.

I thought it was pretty funny when I watched it.

I agree the Bea Arthur is good in it. I like the cartoon and Jefferson Starship too. I probably like it better than AOTC and ROTS though they are hard to compare. I do think TPM is better than the Holiday Special, but that’s because Holiday Special is so bad no because TPM is good.

Okay, I’ve finally exited the honeymoon phase from TLJ and am prepared to give my rankings. The last time I saw them is listed:

  1. A New Hope (2015)
  2. Return of the Jedi (2015)
  3. The Empire Strikes Back (2015)
  4. Rogue One (2017)
  5. The Phantom Menace (2014)
  6. The Force Awakens (2015)
  7. Revenge of the Sith (2014, 2018 fanedited)
  8. The Last Jedi (2017)

As far as AOTC goes, I disliked it so much that I wouldn’t even rewatch it. I last saw it 2013ish.

Pretty close to Frank’s list:

  1. Star Wars
  2. Empire

  4. The Last Jedi
  5. Return of the Jedi
  6. Rogue One
  7. TPM
  8. ROTS
  9. AOTC

  7. TPM

  9. ROTS

Flip the ST movies and this is exactly my list. I think TLJ is probably the better/greater/more accomplished film, but I’ve got TFA above it for the purely sentimental reason that I don’t think I’ll ever have a more joyous theater experience than TFA on opening night. It gives me the warm-and-fuzzies like nothing else outside of the first two films.

EDIT: Sir Ridley gets it too.

The Bea Arthur scene was directed by a different director than most of the other stuff. He was a schoolmate of Lucas, who he picked to do it. After he did that segment there was issues with the “writers” and he was let go.

I love the Boba Fett cartoon and its in my canon.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Updated ranking:

  1. A New Hope (1977)
  2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  3. Return of the Jedi (1983)
  4. Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  5. The Phantom Menace (1999)
  6. The Last Jedi (2017)
  7. Attack of the Clones (2002)
  8. The Force Awakens (2015)
  9. Rogue One (2016)

I should probably put 5 and 6 as equals… or switch them… not sure… the fact is: I kinda like TLJ. Johnson failed many things but his entry has a soul and a heart that are worthy of the best (and the worst !) of Lucas era. And it looks GORGEOUS ! (seriously, it doesn’t look cheap like TFA, it’s beautifuly crafted and epic). And in a way TLJ is more a sequel to ROTS than a sequel to TFA.

edit: since I’m not a troll, I won’t put the Holiday special or the Ewok tvmovies in the list (let’s be serious: ranking them higher than the entire PT is pure trolling guys…), and The Clone Wars 2008 movie is not a real movie but more a tvseries pilot, so it doesn’t appear in my ranking as well. Had it been a movie, I would have put Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars between ROTJ and ROTS (or even higher, because it’s a masterpiece).

The Holiday Special, with the exception of a total of maybe 40 seconds, isn’t funny or interesting.

But it is 15-20 minutes shorter than each PT movie, so it’s got that going for it.
