Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 104

Interestingly, people have been talking at length about what Mark Hamill thinks of TLJ, but no one mentions George Lucas. When TFA came out, people were all about discussing what George’s opinion of TFA was, but with this film it seems he’s almost no longer relevant.

I’m glad, mind you, because of how badly George has been responding to desire for the OUT and dissent of the PT. He should be non-relevant. But I’m just somewhat surprised that his opinion is not even a topic for discussion.

I’m surprised he managed to stay quiet, after selling up so he could move on he couldn’t stop talking about it.

i think its pretty simple, people pick the narrative that fits with their point of view.

But his original vision! All mapped out in 1973!

Wasn’t he quoted as liking TLJ though?

he did, which is why it hasn’t picked up in the ‘news’.

I think what George said specifically is that it was “beautifully made”, which could easily be a backhanded dig at the writing depending on how salty you think he is.

Never lick movie directors to determine their salt content. At least not without permission.

I appreciate the idea behind this exchange, but it’s another instance where JJ dropped the ball in TFA. Poe is the one who rushes Finn from the Falcon while Rey watches, and they’re both standing in the group of people watching the map being reassembled. I assumed that they had met during these scenes. The meaningful encounter should have been with Rose.

Now you’ve made me put my fanfiction hat on.

So what if after the speeder run, Rose had said:
"This is how we win. Not by fighting what we hate…"
Then she loses consciousness.

Then during the final scene on the Falcon, she comes to and Finn rushes over to her, followed by Rey.
Finn: "Are you okay?"
Rose: "Of course."
Finn: "Oh, Rose, this is…"
Rey: "Rey."
Rose: "I know. You saved each other."
Finn and Rey exchange looks. Finn looks back to Rose.
Finn: "You were trying to tell me something, after the crash."
Rose: (waving away his prompt) "I thought I was dying."
Finn: (insistent) "You said that this was how we would win, not by fighting what we hate…"
Rose: (gazing at Finn) "…but by saving what we love."
She looks to Rey.
“You’re a lucky guy, Finn.”

Cutting through the misunderstanding, Finn kisses Rose with a moderate amount of passion.

Rey is extremely glad about it, and goes to hang out with Chewie and the Porgs.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Oh man am I glad that didn’t happen it would have been so cringeworthy.

Not enough people read the EU.

I’ll put this here because it deals with pretty spoiler-y TLJ stuff, but it’s got quite a bit to do with TFA as well. It looks like Pablo Hidalgo went into a little more detail about what’s been carried over from George’s original ST outline. Link:
https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2018/01/pablo-hidalgo-sheds-more-light-on-george-lucass-influence-on-the-sequel-trilogy.html

If this is to be believed, it seems like a lot of the Rey/Kylo/Han/Luke plot points actually come from George. Han’s death at the hands of his son, Luke’s self-imposed exile after that son’s fall, Rey (then still called Kira) having to snap Luke out of his funk . . . a lot of the DNA from Lucas’s ST is still there, just shuffled around a bit.

That’s interesting. I figured a lot more of Lucas’ ideas were in the ST than most assumed.

Two great takes on Luke Skywalker here:

and a cool article on the score:

Good articles, and particularly the last one in illuminating one of the reasons Rian chose to portray Luke wielding his blue lightsaber in the confrontation instead of his green one.

In regards to the debate about how Luke died: On second viewing, it stood out that, during their first telepathy session, Ren says to Ray something along the lines of, “you’re obviously not doing this; the effort would kill you.”

Yes, but I still don’t get it. He doesn’t like the Resistance or the First Order… so his nickname is “Don’t Join”?
