I’m just curious, other than not being Trump, what qualifications does Oprah have for being President?

Being Oprah.

I agree with Jeebus and CatBus but I think this is a good answer.

What qualifications does Warbler have for being President?

Being Warbler.

What qualifications does Frink have for being President?

Being Frink.

What qualifications does Mrebo have for being President?

Being Mrebo.

😦

I’m pretty sure both yhwx and Mrebo were joking, though.

Yhwx

It’s lowercase.

The rules grammar indicate that the first letter of someone’s name be capitalized.

It’s not a proper first name. It’s an online username.

It still seems like it should be capitalized, to me.

NO, HE LIKES TO BE KNOWN AS YHWX THE LESSER.

His “name” is yhwx. It doesn’t get capitalized just because it’s the first word in the sentence. Doing so is kinda like kneeling when saying his name, it’s very disrespectful.

I will have to do some research on this Kamala Harris.

I think the road for her was (ominously) mapped out by Al Gore and Hillary Clinton. She is on many occasions doomed to be the smartest person in the room. Gore tripped over that by seeming too eager to crush his neophyte opponent in a debate. Clinton (I felt) successfully managed to walk the line between being strong and knowledgeable without showing any drive to kneecap her opponent just because he didn’t know how to defend himself, preferring to let him hang himself instead.

That’s the trap of an Oprah candidacy IMO. If Kamala does anything that seems mean to Oprah, it’s over. She’s got to get that tough but fair balance just right.

If Kamala is the smartest person in the room, I view that as a big plus. I want the President to be the smartest in the room.

Depends who else is in the room.

“Depending on the room.”

Back in '99, Trump floated the idea of running for president… with Oprah as his VP.

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1999/10/08/trump.transcript/

KING: We’re back with Donald Trump. We’re going to be all over the board tonight talking about lots of issues as he announces the formation of exploratory committee to possibly seek the candidacy of the Reform Party.

Do have a vice presidential candidate in mind?

TRUMP: Well, I really haven’t gotten quite there yet.

KING: It’s just, you know…

TRUMP: Oprah, I love Oprah. Oprah would always be my first choice.

KING: Oprah?

TRUMP: Oprah. Your competitor, right?

KING: No. Oprah is a competitor to no one.

TRUMP: You know what? I tell you, she’s really a great woman, though. She is a terrific woman. She is somebody that is very special.

EDIT: Here’s video of the interview.

It is not an answer at all.

No it’s not. It’s a joke.

But seriously, why are we actually discussing Oprah being elected? Why is anyone anywhere discussing it? It makes no sense for her to run, and there’s no possible way she could ever win.

Of course it is possible she could win. Look at who she’d be running against.

Trump doesn’t seem all that evangelical if you ask me.

The bar is lower today than ever before. Trump may be our first atheist President – but he’s a self-righteous, bigoted, ignorant, loudmouthed atheist, and apparently in some circles that makes you an honorary evangelical.

She would also have to win the Democratic Primary. There’s no way.

I get that. Nevertheless, there are other – and unfortunately, larger – circles.

Hahahahaha

Trump was the perceived underdog vote. He was the protest vote; the vote against the status quo; the vote to “drain the swamp”. Oprah is not going to hit that same nerve with Democrats.

To say she can win because he did overlooks the reasons why he did.

To say she can’t possibly win is silly. Anyone with 100% name recognition and tons of money has the possibility to win. I wouldn’t think she’s the favorite but of course she’d have a chance.

On 538’s podcast yesterday they reranked their likely Dem nominees for 2020 based on this Orpah “news.” Nate Silver placed her 5th, ahead of Doug Jones and Bernie Sanders.

Sorry but I trust Nate Silver more than you.

5th likeliest is not the same as winning.

And last I checked, no one thought Trump would actually win against Hillary, even the day of the election. Not even 538. So I’ll take those predictions with a large grain of salt.

All this business about Oprah is just sensationalist hype. Nothing will pan out from it. Even if she runs, she doesn’t stand a chance.

That’s quite a generalization.

Exit polling wouldn’t work if you couldn’t take a statistical sample and generalize to the larger population.

Well yeah Ric, but 5th likeliest is also not the same as 5th place. Irrelevant point.

They gave Trump a 35-40% chance of winning. Most other places (NYT inlcuded) gave him <10% chance. And they were pretty much right on the national vote. They did a lot better than most.

I don’t think that Trump’s negatives are of any importance to those who voted for him. The perception among his supporters is that he is doing exactly what he said he would do. He’s making government smaller (closing or downsizing a bunch of agencies), removing regulations, kicking out furiners, undoing things Obama did (esp. Obamacare), backing out of international agreements, lowering taxes (at least for some people), is very pro-Israel / anti-Palestine, and reducing environmental programs. His supporters have every reason to vote for him again, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he won even more comfortably next time. The democrats will need to run a very appealing candidate.

My point is Oprah running is irrelevant. It’s inconsequential. Just something new for the media to talk about.
