How to refer to Star Wars? — Page 2

I always call it A New Hope because people get confused when I just say Star Wars or Episode IV (because they don’t know if I mean chronologically or by release date).

Not enough people read the EU.

Star Wars

Attack of The Clones
Revenge of The Sith
The Force Awakens

That’s a bingo.

I’m a little upset that now I have to specify which ‘Jedi’ movie I’m referring to now.

Although I’ve always been against shortening the titles (if they’re too long, the episode numbers certainly aren’t; you can say 6 instead of Jedi), but I’m still annoyed they reused a noun in a SW title. It feels wrong somehow.

When I talk to my 14yo nephew about the Star Wars movies, he’s not really that big a fan and has a hard time remembering which Episode number goes by which subtitle. At one point, he asked me why I don’t just call them by their episode numbers, and I said that it wasn’t until the prequels came out that their numbers even were on the box or that Star Wars was marketed as A New Hope.

Then I showed him images of OT posters and VHS boxes to prove my point.

God those were awful posters.

My point with the SE VHS boxes was that, even with the SEs, Episode IV was still only called “Star Wars”. It was when Episode I came out, as late as 1999, that “Star Wars” was referred to as Episode IV: A New Hope.

The “pile of dramatic heads” look was old before it was born. I would have been perfectly satisfied if the poster of each SW film consisted of…

A deep space background behind a blazing star. The jet black silhouette of a major character in an action pose is cut out of the star, with the lowest point of the character’s silhouette (their toe or something) just barely touching the bottom edge of the foreground star’s circumference.

And below that reads the title, STAR WARS EPISODE (number): (title).

Does anyone else see the picture I am trying to draw with words? I am not much good with photoshop and I am on a phone.

They’re my favorites. I love the way they all connect with stars coming out from the middle, and not repeating the same characters (though I wouldn’t’ve shoved all the protagonists into ANH’s poster, as it leaves it little for the others; Chewbacca and Jabba? That’s all we’ve got for 6?). I’m using it as the inspiration for my custom covers, using roughly (though not exactly) the same style. It shows consistency between movies, which I’ve learned on OT.com is generally tossed out the window in favor of nostalgia (just look at the topic of this thread). The original posters are not the greatest. The first one has our protagonists idealized (buff Luke, sexy Leia) in a way that seems totally at odds with the film itself. The ESB poster, is okay, I have no major gripes with it, but it could use more Lando. The RotJ poster really should’ve used a different shot of Luke. The one picked just looks…odd.

If you have a gripe with people who are nostalgic for the films they are trying desperately to preserve, why are you here??

For the fanedits. Where else is there a thriving fanedit community, let alone a SW-centric one?

I was referring to those films specifically. The DVD covers were so much worse, and the Blu-rays either had Jake Lloyd or were really lazy.

I don’t know about you guys but I loved the 2006 GOUT covers when I first saw them. When I come down to it I really dont know what is my preferred artwork since I have mixed feelings on all of them. I like original posters but buff Luke and sexy Leia strides too far from what I feel Star Wars should be summed up in one image. The Faces covers are kinda mehh. The faces themselves are neat but the covers as whole are only so so. The SE covers are nice looking but the incorrect depiction of characters (ESB Leia on ANH cover, ROTJ Emperor on ESB cover*, ESB Luke and Vader on ROTJ cover) kinda throws it off for me. In the end I don’t really have a favorite poster/cover design but there’s definitely ones I like for different reasons.

*Yes I know this kinda fits with how the movie is now but to be fair aside from the digital release there’s been no video release of ESB with that artwork with the Ian Emperor change.

Oh, in that case I very definitely agree.

I don’t understand why those were changed on DVD with those really bad theatrical recreations, to match the prequels on DVD… which had also lost their theatrical artwork. Do they think it won’t sell without photoshopped crap on?

😕 I thought they were some of the nicest work Drew Struzan did for the OT. I think the SW poster was especially beautiful. The posters were the best thing about the SEs, IMO.

On topic: lately, I’ve been calling it “SW 77” to avoid confusion (referring to the 77 original, of course and not the 97 SE abomination). The SEs soured me on calling it ANH years ago.

Star Wars’s is certainly the least offensive. But it’s still just a stack of disembodied heads. The original Star Wars artwork was gorgeous (both theatrical posters). The colors on the ROTJ SE poster are downright gross. The Emperor looks like shit on the TESB poster.

I have the SW one framed (I think the faces were very well done), though I agree that the composition wasn’t as interesting as some of his other posters. I don’t care for the other 2 as much, but I like how the three posters “connect” when they’re displayed in a row, and how the luke/vader portion of the rotj poster is kind of a nod to his original “red” rotj poster (which was a great poster).

The '78 “circus” poster is still my all-time favorite, though.

They aren’t the best, but they are better than the later releases. I don’t get why they all have images from the wrong movie though, like the Emperor. Three parts of one poster?

Three parts of one poster?

Indeed. Still doesn’t excuse mismatching the characters, but would you rather they put RotS Palpatine on the poster for TESB?, because that’s the one that’s in the film.
