Honestly, I am surprised it crossed $100m.

Yeah. It’s full of actors nobody likes or has even heard of and the premise doesn’t sound like anything that’s been successful before.
It’s really baffling.

Exactly, a full of stars, can’t miss release just like most Hollywood bombs, especially those from this year…Baywatch, Ghost in the Shell, etc. Which is why I am surprised that this film is as successful as it is…it went up against a new Star Wars release, had quite a bit of controversy regarding it’s seemingly overt sexualization of one of its stars and is another big studio psuedo sequel to a movie from another century that during its own box office run was not super successful, barely cracking $100m in its domestic run. So yeah, it is a surprise, as was the notion of finding a Jumanji apologist on a Star Wars forum…crazy.

Who thought those were “Can’t Miss”? Baywatch was a joke and not many people are into GitS.

Wasn’t Jumanji one of those films that made more moolah on home video, like Austin Powers? The original had enough clout Sony hyped Zathura in 2005 as a sort of sequel, which it wasn’t really.

You also can’t discount people who saw the original film as kids and are taking their families to see this one. Not much else in family fare out right now. Coco has been out for over a month, and nobody apparently cares about Ferdinand as it’s not Pixar or Disney.

Yeah, lots of people love Jumanji, which shouldn’t make the new movie’s success a surprise. I mean, I don’t get why they like Jumanji, but I get that they like it.

Argh, I keep confusing this with Jenga for some stupid reason (I guess because I’ve never seen Jumanji) so I’m all like why would they make a movie in a jungle about that block game?

Dammit, Frink! Now they’ll make a Jenga movie! 😛

Don’t forget the mouthbreathers have to find some way to entertain their screw-trophies so they take them to garbage like Jumanji.*

Like my terrible cousin who got knocked up at 19 and had a shotgun wedding but still preaches how holy she is and won’t say a word to me because I’m tainted with the gay. Not anyone else’s family.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Patrick Stewart should have to forfeit his knighthood or something just for doing a voice in that.

And don’t forget Angry Birds. 😉

Starting the year on the wrong foot there, don’t you think?

When there was the “Oscars so white” controversy and Will Smith not getting nominated came up: I was telling people that Wild Wild West and the movie he did with his kid was the reason he never deserves one. Some things are unforgivable.

Exactly. The film did not do as well as expected in its box office run, even with the late great Robin Williams as the lead. IIRC, at the time people didn’t know what to make of it and thought it was a little too dark/intense for little kids, plus the studio spent a bunch of money on the film, $65m which at the time for a ‘kid’s’ movie was rare, so it wasn’t until it hit the home video market that it really took off and turned a real profit.

TLJ is over 1.2B. Which does not include numbers from opening this weekend in China.

I think Jumanji surpassed TLJ in the US. Sorry if it’s old news/Ric material.

It was #1 this weekend. It’s far behind in total though.

After comparing pretty well earlier in the week, TLJ dropped off significantly from TFA’s weekened performance this weekend, roughly 23.5m versus 42m.

And apparently that 1.2b total did include China, the foreign chart just hadn’t been updated yet.
