Amazing edit but leave in the prequel reference because its great for the prequel fans and it adds backstory to the prequels for the fans who haven’t seen the prequels. And it shows how luke changed

Keep the phasma fight just cut out the bad lines and bb8 killing people just inter cut the hyperspace destroying the ship

Those lucky, lucky people.

Agree but if you watch the clone wars it enhances the prequels

If you watch all three prequels together it enhances the prequels since it takes 1/3 the time to watch the prequels.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

honestly, screw the prequels. I just don’t want Luke Skywalker referring to Darth Sidious. I’d rather have him talk about his legacy of saving his father and that effect on him. Him referring to things that worked well for me emotionally from the OT, and not from the PT, where I saw a bunch of souless monks get offed by troopers when they were meant to be skilled protectors of peace and justice.

Agreed entirely.

I really liked this idea you previously had, darthrush. I think removing canto bight completely might hurt the film.

I’m thinking of doing this idea. What reasons do you have for why removing Canto Bight entirely would have a negative effect on the movie? I’m torn between these two options.

Besides the runtime, it gives a better sense of time and space to the rest of the movie, and develops Rose and her relationship with Finn. Plus just for the fun of it. What really hurt Canto Bight in the final cut is that it kills the pacing and the oversilliness, and if you stick to your original idea, you’d be dealing with both without hurting too much of the movie.

Edit: and the runtime.

Alright. I will be trying both routes and possibly have some test viewings from people willing to do so and see who liked what restructure more.

Too bad because Luke’s behavior against the meaning/purpose of the Jedi Order is fueled by what happened during the PT (events he got to know about between Episode VI and VII). You get rid of every single PT reference, you get rid of a strong part of Luke’s characterization of his ST character. I think it’s totally OK to dislike the PT as movies, but as part of the SW canon I’m not a huge fan of revisionism to erase them. But… it’s your edit, if it works for you it’s 100% your choice 😉

I’ve been playing around with the digital release and exploring ways to alter Canto Bight.

I’m trying out a less aggressive editing path first off which would be going from the prison cell conversation to them in hyperspace. I am curious whether it would be best to cut to a different scene after the prison or one right after the other to make it less confusing.

-Cut from prison cell to hyperspace
-Used The Last Jedi OST to smooth over transition

Both of those work really well. That take on Like dropping the saber should be mandatory for every TLJ edit IMO.

Thanks. I am still pretty iffy on both. I am unsure whether the transition from the cell to hyperspace feels natural enough and I wish there was a shot of the saber by itself on the grass or falling to the grass. That would be the icing on the cake.

That’s great, I’d like to use that. It would be nice to have a shot of the saber landing. Perhaps that could be composited from some other shots, or even filmed by someone with a replica saber.

I think this needs something in between to establish that they get into/are in the ship and/or that the ship leaves Canto Bight.

This. An extra shot of the falling saber (which would also be a nice reference to the PT 😉) would be cherry one the top, but it works fine the way you cut it.

Have you considered simply omitting the lightsaber altogether? Seems like there’s enough footage to be able to do the intro without Rey even reaching into her bag and offering it to Luke. Rey approaches, they stare at each other and Luke walks away.

The issue being:

  • TFA ends with Rey handling the saber to Luke
  • the fact Luke doesn’t want the saber has a value in TLJ

You just need to keep that. Only the quite ridiculous throwing away shot should be removed.

That’s the issue. I can’t find anything as of right now that would serve that purpose well. If I can’t find it then maybe just a trimmed fathier chase is the route. But I’d really like to find a way to get rid of it entirely.

The fathier chase wouldn’t be too bad if it was shortened. As long as the cringy lines and overly comedic shots of the casino being smashed up are gone.

Perhaps but it sucks up so much screentime and brings the pacing to a halt so I’m really set on finding a way to axe it completely.
