Does anyone have any plausible theories on the origins of snoke and maybe a hidden identity?

I’m really just spitballing here, but I think maybe the problem people have with Luke’s actions in TLJ is that there has been this Superman-like mistique set up around him by our culture. People assumed (or inferred), because Return of the Jedi ended on a high note for him, that he essentially could or would become the ST’s Qui-Gon Jinn or Ben Kenobi.

It is because TLJ turned around and said “Nope. Actually, he’s had a severe crisis of faith. Whatever you wanted him to do, he’s having none of it.” And so it’s as if Superman is suddenly not for truth and justice (and the “American way”). He’s not what we expected. He’s Bizzaro-Luke.

Humanizing him in this way cuts people deep, I think, because of how we as a culture built him up as a sort of superhero in the 80’s. Whether or not someone read the EU novels.

You are combining what I see as two different ideas. There is the idea that Luke was set up as a legendary figure like Superman. And there is the idea that he was a good guy who would go on to continue to learn and grow.

I hate the idea that Luke is known far and wide for his various deeds. I like the idea that not many people knew what happened on the second Death Star, don’t know his parentage, and lots of people don’t believe in the Force. If anything, I think Luke would never really receive great recognition.

Seeing him fall is more like seeing your dad after 35 years and he’s kind of a drunk loser. He wasn’t one before and maybe you idolized him a bit, but c’mon.

I think most people experience a discovery that their parents are more human than they knew as children. That has nothing to do with a change in the parents.

Finding out that Luke isn’t a legend and still isn’t perfect is a great way to go about this. Making him a “bizarro Luke” is a different thing.

So for me, it’s far less about idolizing Luke than wanting to see him follow a path of growth and discovery, as I want for any protagonist I like.

Just because a group has been dicking around for 1,000 generations doesn’t mean their view is the be all end all.

Yes, but that entire presumption is arrogance IMO. We’re speaking about a group who have maintained peace and justice for a 1,000 generations. If that’s dicking around, I think I have to come out of the closet.

"The Force is what gives the Jedi its power."
not “The Force is the Jedi’s power.”

As stated by one of those dicks.

Always missing the nuance. Just because the Jedi are good doesn’t mean the Jedi are always right. Just because the Jedi aren’t always right doesn’t mean the Jedi are always wrong.

When Luke says that saying the light belongs to the Jedi is vanity, he’s basically right, but he’s definitely up his own ass about it, butting in with his ideology when Rey is just trying to feel the force. It is a little arrogant of him, and it’s supposed to feel that way.

We shouldn’t blindly accept that the Jedi can do no wrong just because they’ve been around for 1,000 generations (especially when the PT shows they almost caused their own extinction). But just because we should have a critical eye with the Jedi doesn’t mean we should dismiss them outright, and the movie doesn’t do that.

“I will not be the last Jedi.” Don’t forget.

The force does not belong to the Jedi. It never has. The light does not belong to the Jedi, is never has and it never should. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t believe that the Jedi won’t fight for the light as long as they can.

I missed the nuance, because there was none in your OP, my friend. “1,000 generations of dicking around” is not a nuanced statement. Nuanced posts invite nuanced answers. Posts filled with hyperboles don’t.

Dicking around does not mean being dicks. At least I don’t use it that way. (to me it’s basically a synonym for “hanging,” surely I’m not the only one who uses it that way?) It wasn’t meant to be a hyperbolic statement.

Just to prove I’m not crazy…

I think a lot people in the ST universe have stopped believing in the force and the rebellion because the word of the star killer base destruction didn’t seem to get around the universe so people look back at the old rebellion but not to the current one. It could be because TFO seem to be winning the war. Maybe later people will be looking at Finn and Rey as people look at luke and Han.
I think too many people overestimated luke in the TLJ, their had been this whole mission in TFA to find Luke and bring him home to save the rebellion and people seemed to think quick and easy he’ll come home and just destroy the FO but with that in their mind as what they wanted, the change made was lower than their expectancies of him hence the weren’t satisfied.

I caught it in IMAX and there are some shots that are absolutely gorgeous to me like Paige’s death on the bomber and seeing Phasma’s eye out of the cracked helmet.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

What people who don’t like about the canto-bight sequence seemed to be "well I want to see the rebellion and whats happening and stuff with Luke and Rey we don’t want this added part"
Personally I didn’t mind it too much.

yes, there are so many beautiful shots, and IMAX gives the picture room to ‘be’. The bomber scene was absolutely beautiful for sure.

I think IMAX will be my next (4th) go round.

I don’t know if I ever posted this, but number 3 for me was in Dolby Atmos, which I highly recommend.

Stalker!

ok, so my 2nd viewing was RPX/Dolby Atmos, not my third, but 4th was IMAX.

I’ve only seen the film in Dolby Cinema and THAT was pretty gnarly. Even had reclining seats, free drink, inky blacks and Atmos sound… It was pretty cool.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Rian Johnson on Leia in space…

Rian Johnson, the film’s writer and director, said that the idea came from LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, who remembered Luke telling Leia in Return Of The Jedi about her own Force abilities.

“She kept asking, ‘Leia’s a Skywalker, Luke gave her this speech in Jedi and told her basically, ‘You have this potential, too.’,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“It seemed to me it would be a really emotionally impactful thing to see her use it.”

He added: “I liked the idea it would be an instinctual thing. This would be more like stories you hear about parents of toddlers who get caught under cars and they get Hulk strength and lift the car up. It would be something in these final moments to show that she’s not done with the fight. And like a drowning person pulling herself back, that’s how it manifests itself for the first time in her.”

One thing I have to applaud… this set. So good to have the production back at Pinewood building major sets, utilising practical costumes and FX for these new SW flicks. This particular set has a real Flash Gordon emperor Ming vibe. Love it!

Interesting. So that answers one of my questions “Is this her first time doing something like this or not?”. I still wish this was explored more in the film, but I suppose what we got will suffice.

I liked the Leia scene and I read it as intended: Leia instinctually acted to save her life with the latent powers we know her to have. Maybe the moment was too contrived or the execution a little funny, but it worked for me.

It was a bit out of place, she probably would of died in the explosion and would of exploded in space but who cares it was a way they could keep her alive.

It would be nice if they could have built the whole set though, instead of relying so heavily on redscreen.

It’s funny what little things can annoy or be loved, but the red walls bothered me. My brain says, “oh it’s a movie studio.”

I guess it’s nice to know Snoke’s favorite color at least 😉

Yeah that and Crait. The way they filmed both of them were stunning. Despite the skim speeders were pointless and helped nothing, it was still really nice to watch!

Wouldn’t Plo koon be able to do that when he got shot down or would the explosion of killed him?

Every situation is different. Leia avoided pretty much all harm except exposure to space.
