The popular vote would mean that smaller states don’t have a voice? Well, the electoral college means that several larger states don’t have a voice. The EC, combined with jerrymandering, has skewed election results more and more with each passing year.

Exactly! And I am conservative! I hate that line of reasoning that the states won’t have a voice. Last I checked, the president represented the people, not the state governments.

Going by the popular vote isn’t going to fix the underlying problems with the first-past-the-post system.

I have argued this before, but I believe it could help with the underlying problem, though not address it completely. A year or so ago, yhwx and I had a little discussion and he shared some interesting videos. I like the idea of runoffs or ordered preference (whatever the official term is for those) elections.

No, but the electoral college is a problem that can be fixed without a constitutional amendment.

Such a fix is a workaround, not the true solution, and I’m not sure I favor workarounds. I’m pretty firm in my conviction that if the Constitution isn’t working in some way, then the Constitution should get fixed instead of finding loopholes. Unfortunetly, the Constitution may be just a tad more difficult than desirable to amend.

Can you point to anything he’s done or said that isn’t just trolling?

Sure. But if your point is that Trump trolls a lot, I don’t disagree.

The President has a lot more important things to do than troll on twitter.

Yes, it’s called instant runoff voting. I think I’m less sold on the idea than I was previously. It definitely can be said that it makes voting more complex, which I don’t think is necessarily a good thing. That may deter people from voting. The choice between having a fairer voting system and having more people being able to vote is a hard one.

In other news, Trunp is not well:

I am not a medical professional, and I will not pretend to know what is truly happening here. It’s become a common conversation topic in Washington to muse on whether the president is suffering from some form of cognitive decline or psychological malady. I don’t think those hypotheses are necessary or meaningful. Whatever the cause, it is plainly obvious from Trump’s words that this is not a man fit to be president, that he is not well or capable in some fundamental way. That is an uncomfortable thing to say, and so many prefer not to say it, but Trump does not occupy a job where such deficiencies can be safely ignored.

This should be true. Though DominicCobb makes a good observation. I really don’t understand the desire by presidents, lawyers, doctors, etc to play golf all the time.

Is it even fun? I’ve only ever done driving ranges and mini-golf. Somehow I doubt I’d enjoy spending every weekend golfing.

I’d probably enjoy it if I didn’t suck at it.

It’s a sport that requires little physical ability and allows time to converse with your other rich friends. Could that be it?

I’ve never played it but I guess it could be fun to do once in awhile - but so is mini golf, bowling, croquet, horseshoes, etc. I don’t have a desire to play them every weekend either.

I have mused about golf never existing and how we would propose a lawyer (because most lawyers seem to golf) to come and hit a ball with a club really far then go find it and keep hitting it until you get it in a little hole. And do it every free chance they get. I hope they would think I’m crazy.

Here’s George Carlin (obviously NSFW) on golf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4w7H48tBS8

if this is true, that is just terrible. what the hell is wrong with people*

*rhetorical question

This is pretty sick. And consider how random for the victim given that “The person who was the target of the swatting gave the other gamer a false address, which sent police to a nearby home instead of his own.”

How is he going to fake his way through the mandatory physical he’s got coming up early next year? He can’t substitute that pseudo hippie personal doctor of his to do it. At least I hope not. If he tries to suppress the results, it will only fuel speculation.

I’m sure historically Presidential health issues have been covered up before, but it was a lot easier to keep a secret back then.

Woodrow Wilson had a stroke in 1919, and became incapacitated due to it. It was covered up for a few months. Some say that Reagan was already suffering from some mental decline in the latter years of his presidency.
