We’re not here at all to discuss capitalism, but criticizing the greedy and opulent rich people is essentially what led to the french revolution that installed and legitimized the burgeois class in continental Europe…

There’s no conflict between criticizing those above you and capitalism, exactly because capitalism is based on the idea that if you do things right, you should be granted the right to escalate in the social pyramid

Well we disagree a bit there, the implication is that these people have escalated to the top of the social pyramid because of the immoral things they’ve done. But obviously it’s open to interpretation and apparently completely beside the point in terms of your analysis (as much as our perspectives on SW diverge, I can’t say I don’t find your takes interesting).

Nope, nothing wrong with being nice to animals. Only that it is a thing or a theme from OUR era. Not something that fits the era Star Wars is set in. From that point of view yes, it is political.

Once the USSR government made a El Quijote movie, refreshed with marxist themes. At some point it ceased to be El Quijote and was just an open alegory of those day’s debate. And then it just wasn’t a movie about a spanish hero anymore.

And you might ask me what era is star wars set in since it is basically escapism.

And that falls on everyone’s personal perspective. But as I said, to me SW is a fairy tale, a mostly traditional fairy tale. No one cared about animal’s rights back then.

It just felt off to me, just as the Ewoks, or the Opera scene in ROTS.

Well, we didn’t see anybody whipping the Taun Tauns in ESB either. 😛

Arguably, the casino was the place I would have expected to see breasts in this movie. 😉

I think Mithrandir might have looked a bit too much into it, in his own way.

I found the dark side cave scene interesting. It was a very different experience for Rey than what Luke had on Dagobah.
And if what Kylo said about Rey’s parents is actually true, what do we make of her childhood memory in TFA of looking up at a departing ship? Did Unkarr Plutt lie about what happened to them?

Also, it’s funny as heck that a Jedi who grew up on Tatooine regards Jakku as an even more desolate hole.

I’m freaking whipped, y’all. I love that movie. The grand, mythic scope, the intensity, two and a half hours and I still didn’t want it to end.

Also, I didn’t read hardly any posts before writing this, so I can’t wait to see how contrarian my opinion is. 😛

One of my favorite parts of the movie, Hamill nailed it.

This and tickling Rey with the reed were two of my favorite Luke moments.

I’m still trying to figure out why I’d want to watch episode IX.

Good to hear about another person who loved the film! What was the sequence that stuck with you the most? Considering how many amazing ones there are 😃

I do despite how unsure I am about TLJ because I seriously have no fucking idea what IX is going to be. I had a feeling for the trajectory of VIII after TFA (even though I was only, like, 30% right), but after TLJ I seriously have no clue where IX is going to go.

Also so I can figure out how I want to edit the sequel trilogy as a cohesive whole. Some things I’d like to change about TLJ might not be doable depending on where they take IX.

Im almost sure when I do my edit of The Last Jedi (which is already being planned in detail) that I will make it the last episode of the saga. I think it works beautifully as such.

The real question for IX is what kind of bling will Supreme Leader Kylo be wearing

Because a movie theater is a great place to hide from murderous replicants? 😉

Just got back from seeing this.

My overriding thought from beginning to end: This is an absolutely Exquisite Corpse.

Rian takes JJ’s entry, laughs at it, and savagely ends the two most useless characters while finishing the trilogy in one movie, giving Abrams nowhere to go if he attempts to make a ROTJ lookalike.

Sure, I could pick apart the logical gaps in the spaceship pursuit and the Godspeed Maneuver™, but that’s for a future fanedit.

This movie is multiple main course meals, and for that alone it’s worth putting up there with the Original Trilogy.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

So many, man. Snoke’s throne room, Luke and Yoda, Luke’s binary sunset death, so much of it was phenomenal.

YES! When the humor is well done it’s brilliant.

I don’t see why people are constantly complaining about TLJ like “it breaks what TFA set up!” or some such. That’s what I liked about it—the plot twists.

You think Snoke is going to be the next Palpatine (ie. big bad who dies at the end of the third film), but he’s not.

You think Luke is going to mentor Rey but he doesn’t.

You think Leia is dead but she’s not.

You think someone or something on the Light Side is connecting Rey and Ren, but it’s Snoke, but it’s again not really.

You think Finn is going to destroy the tracker but he doesn’t and gets caught. You think there’s no way out except then BB-8 shows up in a chicken walker.

You think Poe is going to save the cruiser but he doesn’t.

You think it’s the Vice Admiral coming through the door but it isn’t.

You think Luke is on the planet fighting Ren but he’s not.

You think Ren is going to kill Rey but he doesn’t—he does exactly what Vader wanted to do in ESB but couldn’t.

It’s the best thing about the film. It keeps throwing curve balls.

Oh, and that business about Rey’s family being nobodies from nowheresville, Ren told her that. There is no guarantee that he was not lying. But even if he wasn’t, I like the idea that not the whole of the The Force hinges directly on descendants of the House of Skywalker (as many people speculated that she was a daughter of Luke or Leia).

The one real negative of the film is… Yoda. They got the Yoda voice actor from The Clone Wars (whom I hate), and used either another Creepy Puppet Yoda or a CGI adaption of it.

Just came back from my second viewing and my thoughts have cleared up. I LOVE IT! I might post a review and analysis later.

I’m pretty sure I hated this movie. I was beyond confused with some of the ideas that went into the plot.

The humor was a huge issue in this movie for me and it was obnoxious from the very first moment it appeared (the prank call that helped defeat the Dreadnought). It really did nothing but detract from the movie for me. Like what was I supposed to get out of the “Luke milking a giant aliens breasts in front of Rey and then sloppily drinking the milk so it runs down his chin” scene? That was bizarre as hell.

Then there’s just bizarre moments in the story. One had me laughing more than any of the comedy scenes and I think it should be obvious which scene that is. “Super Leia” killed me. At first I was stunned. We see Kylo Ren hesitate to kill is mother and then his wingmen gun her down and she gets sucked out into space. Wow, great stuff! And to make it better awhile after she’s been dead the camera focuses on her body out in space. Looked really haunting. Then her hand twitched and confusion set in. When she started flying my brain started melting.
Honorable mentions for bizarre plot lines include that Finn/Rose adventure that I’m still confused whether it accomplished absolutely anything at ALL and the Holdo withholding the plans from everyone because plot reasons(?) and then jumping to hyperspace in Snoke’s ships and annihilating it completely (with Finn and Rose conveniently surviving everything while the ship around them and the dozens of troopers and Phasma herself just disappeared from that execution party they were having because…plot?).

Wasted potential with Snoke too. I was interested in learning who he was and then they just kill him. Who taught him the ways of the dark side? How was he influencing Kylo Ren? How did they know he was influencing Kylo Ren? How did he become leader of the First Order if he’s a nobody? Why did the director decide that having a terrible shot of Snoke dead and sticking out his tongue with a goofy expression on his face was necessary and did anything aside from detract from how threatening Snoke was in the previous scenes?

Why did Luke also try to murder Kylo in his sleep? He put the Rebellion at risk and his own personal safety at risk in Return of the Jedi in order to save Darth Vader. But his nephew is being turned to the darkness and the first thing to come to his mind is loom over him with a turned on lightsaber in his sleep and contemplate murdering him? What? Why did Luke become so disillusioned with the Jedi when arguably he was the one that pushed Ben over the edge? Why did Kylo collapse the house on both of them and how did Kylo escape fine but Luke was trapped there while his temple burned? Instead of taking responsibility for his actions, why did he run away and leave his friends alone and weaker against this rising new threat? Why did the writers use Luke Skywalker as a foil to the ideas of BOTH the Jedi and Sith instead of Kylo Ren who was set up to have actual issues with both and ended up rejecting both in the end anyways?

And I’m looking over all I’ve written about this movie and realizing…yeah I did hate this flick. It was pretty terrible.

Wait, they did? Why? Oz came back for Rebels, why not an actual film? Sounded like Oz to me…
