TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 61

Nah thanks, I don’t have the tools to record properly something and my french accent is terrible (not quite as terrible as the Monty Python’s french accent in Holy Grail but still…). I was thinking about an real english guy actually (tradition of most SW bad guys being english), the only one I “know” around here is Adywan (and likely to have the tools to record something usable), but Sir Ridley would be a very good idea ! I cannot recall where Never is from.

Ah, gotcha. I thought you had a particular guy in mind that I was expected to pick up on. I might try recording lines anyway, channeling all those vaguely European sounding Imperial douchebags.

EDIT: Although I could go for: “Weapon reprimed to shoot them a second time.” (Imagine the most exaggerated stereotypical French accent possible, by John Cleese.)

The 720p encode just finished aaaand… it’s unusable. And, to boot, the encoded DVD video stream just… isn’t anywhere to be found. I exported it to my Desktop as always, and it’s just… not there. I have no answer.

I’m going to reencode the 720p version using Apple’s Compressor in the hopes that it bypasses whatever is causing the problem, since V2.1 will be the permanent one before too long. Would anyone be devastated if I skipped a DVD release for V2.0, given that it would be Monday at the earliest before such a version became available?

I’ll have a look at these things:
• Kylo Ren’s helmet on/off
• 3PO walking sound
• Recolored Leia deleted scene (I am of course partial to my own coloring found here
https://mega.nz/#!nFEw2BxA!ZzTOO__xA5gkVVNoRR70WrNGGbHOMhOhr64j4uZ1h7Q but I’ll send an uncorrected version to Neverar so he can have another go at it)
• Fix shots “after Han is shanked to Leia’s Force reaction”
• Updated Starkiller shot as X-wings arrive (I think I have a version of this)
• Dub tech guy to tell Hux “weapon fully recharged” (maybe)

I would suggest holding off V2.1 until TLJ is released just in case anything needs fixing to make it consistent (not sure what that’d be though) or to see if any material can be used from there, e.g. to have Hux tell Snoke of the Republics destruction.

Apart from that, the one thing I’d like to see changed is to have some more urgency about SKB being almost ready to fire when Han confronts Kylo. Currently you have a scene where it’s stated that it’ll be ready in 15 minutes, then another one where 3PO states that there are only 10 minutes left and then it fires. The problem is that it takes far longer to get from “15 minutes left” to “10 minutes left” than it does from the latter to the actual shot. So to me it felt weird, that SKB was suddenly ready after Hans death. That might be fixable by just having 3PO say “5 minutes left” or by adding another cut to the Resistance being worried inbetween. Maybe the “What do we do? It isn’t working.” scene could be used here already while the “There’s a brand new hole in the oscillator.” part would of course stay where it currently is. That’d also fix that the “What do we do?” sounds like something they’d say while they’re still trying to prevent SKB from firing at all instead of having fired already.

And while I’m at it, I think it’d be nice if it could somehow be shown that the Resistance knows that they’re the next target. No idea how that’d be done though.

Apart from that, the only other tiny issue I had with the edit is Kylos hood in the second Snoke scene. But that shouldn’t even be that hard to fix as it’s mostly seen in the shots from behind and we have a shot from pretty much the same perspective without the hood that could be used to replace Kylo.

Oh, I won’t begin exporting V2.1 until after I’ve seen Episode 8 for certain, even if it were all ready to go.

And… we do see the Sun being drained completely as they are having their conversation, so I don’t think it’s a problem we don’t see the Resistance chiming in about it. I hear what you’re saying, but there’s no obvious solution and I think it’s okay.

Seems like the sort of thing that, if this version were what was released, I would not be surprised to hear, “We filmed a scene that was supposed to go here of the Resistance being worried, but we cut it because it detracted from the unhurried sequence between Solo and Kylo Ren.”

Yeah, it probably flows better this way. Still, maybe having 3PO say that there are 5 minutes left would be possible. And it’d pretty much fix the issue for me.

So I ripped my TPM Blu-Ray, converted the audio to mono WAVs, then downloaded your PCM track and did the same, and threw the center channel of both into Audacity to swap out the opening theme and…

…they’re not in sync. Which I was very much not expecting - I figured all crawls were probably the same length and the music the same tempo and such, so it would be an easy swap. Turns out that’s not the case.

So I don’t have any kind of an ETA on my “fixed” audio track with a less-shitty-sounding opening theme, unfortunately. That’s going to require more fucking around than I expected.

Yeah, Adywan must have prepared it to fit his universal template. When I saw the suggestion about the opening music in the first place, I planned to just generate an alternate audio track while I was at it, but found them not to be in sync.

Author

Possibly. I wasn’t even using Adywan’s audio, I was using audio straight from the TPM Blu-Ray.

Wonder how far out of sync the OT opening themes are, since each of them is a different recording…

Author
Time

They did it with the 1977 pre-ANH version, but I don’t think any other film has the crawl synced to the music that way (paragraph to paragraph). The sync “issues” between films are probably down to variations in crawl length and just natural variances in the recording/conducting of the music.

Also, the PCM file is a WAV larger than 4GB, which I’m honestly not sure how you created as WAV has a 4GB limit.

I converted it to W64 using eac3to, which allows you to mux it into a Blu-Ray folder with tsmuxer. I’m making the disc now so I can’t confirm that it works, but it’s super easy to convert the WAV to W64 for anyone that wants to use the PCM track but can’t get it to work.

Download eac3to and stick it in a folder that has a relatively simple path (mine is D:\Editing\eac3to).

Do the same for the PCM WAV file - it might be a little easier to rename it, too. I renamed it to TFA.wav.

Open up your command prompt and type in the eac3to directory, then the original WAV, then the new .w64, and hit enter and let it run.

For example, here’s what I typed into command prompt:

 D:\Editing\eac3to\eac3to.exe D:\TFA.wav D:\TFA.w64

Basically, the syntax is, first point it to eac3to, then point it to the input file, then designate the output file.

Then you should be able to load the PCM into tsmuxer with no issues.

For some reason, mkvtoolnix can’t see the .w64 and won’t open the .WAV, but you can probably mux it in tsmuxer then remux it back into an MKV with mkvtoolnix once the .w64 is part of an m2ts instead of on its own.

I just watched the original TFA with my 60-year old father (because I haven’t made Finnish subtitles for Restructured yet). After the movie I showed him why this edit was made. He agreed that we will be watching Restructured from now on because it seems to make a bit more sense, haha! I also pointed out to him that Leia ignores Chewie when they return from SKB and he got a little pissed after realizing it (read: cannot unsee). 😄

My only quirks with it that I felt could use a couple changes…

Some of the dialogue is a little quiet with the new music additions. Specifically, I only found two places this was the case:

  1. When Han says, “Where’d you get that?” in Maz’s castle when she hands out the lightsaber.
  2. In the new Snoke scene after Han’s death when he says, “Prepare the weapon.”

Maybe just duck the music down slightly? Other than that, I think this seemed great.

I didn’t find these to be too quiet on my speakers, for what it’s worth (not much).
One place I noticed quiet audio was R2 finishing the search of the backup data. I couldn’t really hear it fade in during Chewie’s shot, and it was pretty quiet in the next one as well.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Awesome. And, again, my hope for this project is to preserve the experience of TFA as much as possible while making this single (or two or three) alterations. I will join you in hating that, though!
And if you end up doing Finnish subtitles, let me know and I’d be happy to include them for V2.1.

I think for the Maz scene it would have let the original music be audible. (I got the audio fully baked from Ridley, but I assumed that was the reason so I did not ask.)
I also got the Snoke audio from Ridley fully prepared, but I believe it would be too jarring to fade the audio in after that point rather than when it begins.

NeverarGreat, I will take a listen to the R2 scene at the end.

I’ll have a look at the sound mix in these spots and see what can be done.
