Hehe, that's the front, hence the different collars. The right one would have been quite uncomfortable!

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.

You know that DVDs can be encoded with markers, so that DVD players can do pan&scan on the fly?

Well, a TBC is really mainly required for VHS/SVHS and so on, most laserdisc players have a competent TBC (Time Base Corrector) built in.
I'm not sure what is available at the budget end of the spectrum. I remember building one when I was a kid (though it was a line TBC, that newfangled frame stuff didn't exist then)

A lot of TBCs out there can mess with the video in different ways, so it pays to do your research and decide what features you want.
A TBC won't fix problems recording into the tape, but it really makes it a lot easier to get a rock solid capture every time.
I'd go over to doom9 or somewhere similar and ask guys what they are using and why.

Thanks again Laserman. I'll check the site that Doctor M (thank you as well) posted. I'm only capturing the video from Laserdisc, so I may not need a TBC if I can use the filters of VirtualDub effectively. The two or three major obstacles I have are: I only have the DC LD's (Leia footage intact), NTSC, and I'm capturing with a DV capture device (Canopus ADVC-100). I also have a WinFast TV2000 Expert Card, so I may try to do some comparison. I really like the ADVC-100 because I don't have to worry about the audio being out of sync. I just wished it captured in raw AVI instead of just DV.

The only VHS I plan on capturing is just the missing sound effects of the snowspeeder spinning out of control and exploding in ESB. Sorry, I know I have mentioned that one a lot. Those sound effects are unfortunately missing on every THX source that I have seen. I don't have the Faces LD's, but I do have the Faces Widescreen VHS and the aforementioned DC LD's and those sounds are missing on both. I have the widescreen SE VHS set, so I will grab those sounds from that.

You're wrong (or maybe your dvd player). When encoding a dvd you can set markers where the dvd player has to zoom in if the 4:3 pan&scan option is activated. You can even define how much the dvd player will zoom into the picture.

While this is technically true, there is only one commercial DVD that I know of that uses this function. Apparently, the motion isn't very smooth.

Furthermore, I'd like to know if you know of a video editor that incorporates these commands into the video.

I found some interesting information at this link concerning TBC's. Most of the article deals with standalone DVD Recorders, but there is some good information. On page 5, there is a split screen example produced by the Elite Video BVP-4. That Vidicraft III unit described also sounds very interesting.

I got bored...!

One of a few T-shirt variants I just whipped up. If anyone likes it (with or without changes) it can be my donation to the project.

Hey,
How did you know that 'Prince' was the last member of the team!?!

Is the X0 project going to be a straight transfer with only some color correction? Also, which LD set are you using? The "faces" or the Definitive Collection. I heard that the ANH transfer of the "faces" set has less "noise reduction" so that means it looks better.

Just wanted to say the new site looks fantastic. Great work everyone! It impressed me so much I felt I had to make another donation, so I did. Not to sound like a repeating S.O.B. but I can't wait, the releases based on this project are going to blow everyone away and make Lucas realize what sort of market he missed out on by not releasing these to us in the first place. Dummy.

I hope it's okay to put this here. . .

I was so impressed with the sample screenshot from the X0 project (when compared to the TR47 laserdisc-to-DVD transfer), that I decided to add another point of comparison. . . the official DVD.

Here's the three side-by-side. Look at how the X0 project is nearly as clear! And, indeed, seems clearer in some respects. And, of course, the colors of the X0 project are much closer to how we all remember the scene:

If for some reason, the X0 team objects to my posting this image, please let me know. I'll delete it immediately.

Thanks!

Would you believe I just updated my .sig in regards to this scene?

the logical reason arguing for this would be that the last time anakin had a regular body he was in his twenties.

Pre-Dooku duel. Otherwise he's still missing an arm. But maybe as a spirit he doesn't care.

For some reason I keep hearing the Jake Lloyd-Anakin pleading with the Force, "You HAVE to let me become One with you! It wasn't me who did all those evil things. It was the one-armed man!"
- post on Starwars.com

Oh, and by all means, keep the pic up. Look at all the blue push in the official DVD! Sad, sad, sad.....

Wow, those comparaisons are AMAZING!

The DVD seems just an edge bit sharper, but if you zoom in, you'll notice digital artifacts around Shaw's head in the DVD pic...this is absent from the laserdisc picture. Of course, the x0 dvds will have these artifacts once they're compressed...But still, the eyebrows and the correct color already blows GL's "official" version out the water.

You guys are truly awesome. Thank you.

You should at least write the name of the project correct. It's X0 (zero) not O.

I often find myself pronouncing it XO as well - it's shorter.

Wow, I'm pretty happy with my TR47 set, but that pic comparison above really looks great. I may have to get this set when it comes out. Nice work guys, I'll have to read up on this thread.

Pronounce? I'm not sure I've ever opened my mouth and actually said "The X0 Project"! But I always think "ex-zero".

Other things I don't think I've ever pronounced:

Sebastian Shaw
YUV colourspace
OT.com
MeBeJedi

It's not that I don't know how to pronounce them; it's just who would I pronounce them to?
