1997 Star Wars Special Edition 35mm Project (a WIP) — Page 9

The audio in the samples is the optical stereo, the DTS CDs we have as well, I am grabbing the optical Stereo so that it is not lost, and people may be interested in hearing it.

These samples have no colour correction, they are not matched to the print, and were scanned in log, so will look low contrast. The print however is greenish whenever there is an optical comp, and the greys are bluish where there is not.
You can see this in the x-wing cockpit shots that are close-up (no-comp, blue-grey) and wider shot (stars comped in, cockpit is greenish-grey).

The grade on all the SE prints of ANH I have seen are really all over the place.
So while these samples are not the grade that you see in the cinema, the differences between each scene are how they are, relative to each other, if you know what I mean. i.e. the inconsistency shot-to-shot is absolutely in the print.

That fighter take-off shot actually looks really natural on the print, despite the low contrast!

For comparison, here’s the blu-ray (and then some of my own adjustments):

This seems like a right time to introduce my new color matching algorithm. It’s based on the machine learning methodology used for the color grading bot, as such henceforth it shall be known as…the color matching bot.

For this entire edit replace the audio so use all of this of course ask for permission
For a new hope ask Harmy if you could use Harmy respecalized audio track
For empire make your own using harmys despecialized 2.0 and the Blu-Ray
For Jedi use Harmy despecialized 2.5 and the Blu-ray

Do it So the audio doesn’t sound bad

Um…no.

First off, Harmy used the theatrical 1977 audio. This is the 1997 Special Edition. They don’t sync.

Second off, Poita is using the theatrical DTS audio - as in, the exact same audio you would have heard in a theater with DTS sound instead of Dolby in 1997 - which is by many accounts the best-sounding mix of Star Wars out there, SE changes notwithstanding.

JEDIT: Just saw that you said “Respecialized.” For that, Harmy used the 1997 Laserdisc Dolby Digital audio. If I’m not mistaken, the DTS discs that Poita is using are higher quality and are already designed to sync to the film reels he’s using. Plus, they’re the same mix as the LD audio Harmy used.

Ok I thought it would sound better so it doesn’t sound like 20 year old film second
I still think he should recreate the audio for empire and Jedi

Why would he need to recreate anything if he has access to A) the optical stereo audio on the film itself and B) the theatrical DTS discs for the movies? And this isn’t about updating it to make it seem like it was just made. It is 20 years old, it should sound like it did 20 years ago, just like any restoration of the 1977 version (Harmy’s included) should sound like it did 40 years ago.

Alright, tried cleaning up and stabilizing the Death Star Alderaan scene poita uploaded a few days ago. It hasn’t been color corrected yet.

Plus the dts tracks are digital and thus haven’t aged. For ANH it’s the best it ever sounded anyway, way better than the newer mixes. Only esb and rotj actually sound better on the blurays than they did in 97.

So in essence recreating the 97 mix using the 2011 mix would actually sound worse.

Recreating the older (77 or he’ll even 93) mixes using the 97 mix as a base on the other hand would sound pretty good but this isn’t the thread for something like that…

Nice Dre!
I’m interested in checking that out, I’d love some more info on how it works too. Colour me intrigued!

Is that hideous saturated mess really how the Blu-ray looks??

How important is it that the frames match precisely? Does a small amount of warp affect things?

Yes, that’s the Blu-ray, though seems like all of the bluray Special Edition shots are even worse than normal in terms of color.

They also always seem to look worse when you take a screenshot of them than they do when you are actually watching the blu Ray. Idk if it’s because of some weird encoding issue or what.

They still look pretty bad tho

As long as the warping is not too extreme, it shouldn’t affect the result significantly.

Yes, blu-ray grabs will look different due to the Rec709 colour space, but still, that is really saturated/
