This is a 1992 “navy” boxset of the trilogy. Could someone tell me if it’s anmorphic widescreen?, please, thanks

I'm not sure if they were widescreen or not, kev (I think they were) but 'anamorphic' in the case of video refers to the ability to use more resolution to fill a widescreen monitor space and that's a neww addition to video that DVD brought us.

Not true. There were some anamorphic LDs manufactured in Japan that pre-dated DVD. Japan has had widescreen TVs (and HDTVs) readily available since the early- to mid-1990s, so it made sense to have anamorphic LDs in that market.

DVD definitely brought anamorphic presentation to the masses, though. Especially the laggardly North American market...

I seem to recall T2 being one of those rare LDs.

Pretty sure you're right. 'Cliffhanger' and 'Showgirls' I think were available as squeeze discs, too. These discs were released in about 1996, IIRC. There's a list on the 'Net somewhere...

I wouldn't mind squeezing a showgirl.

No idea if it's anamorphic, but it's definitely widescreen. I owned this at one time and am still kicking myself for not still owning it

I own it it's not anamorphic or real widescreen but letterboxed. Also this set is really bad because Return of the Jedi in this set is misformated, which means it is not centered to the middle frame. The first set to have this corrected is the 1995 VHS widescreen boxset faces edition, or the '93 definitive collection ld or the 1995 faces ld. The hologram packaging is pretty cool though, and it comes with the trilogy version of george lucas creative impluse excerpt. and from star wars to jedi.

The info at davisdvd.com (where the picture is hotlinked from) says it is widescreen.

By widescreen they mean letterboxed w/s, I don't know of any retail VHS which are anamorphic w/s.

Anamorphic VHS is possible, e.g. if you record a 16:9 broadcast off digital cable/satellite TV, I think there's a widescreen signal in one of the video lines in the overscan area of the picture. One of my VCRs will even autoswitch a TV to 16:9 mode when playing back a recording of a 16:9 programme - a feature my DVD recorder is sadly lacking!

There was more than one release.
