1997 Star Wars Special Edition 35mm Project (a WIP) — Page 6

There is a certain level of detail naturally present in the SE prints that I just can’t find in some of the greatest of IB tech scans. I wouldn’t mind a ‘Cinema Despecialized’ edition that uses mostly SE 35mm footage, plugging in 77 35mm footage whenever necessary. Or if some technical genius could digitally average the two together, that would be fantastic.

It’s amazing how much the CGI additions stick out.

It’s actually a puppet poorly matted in.

They turned the head around, put a hat on it, and then used it as yet another new alien inserted into the Cantina shots.

Where were you in '77?

When scanning, you have so many things to take into consideration, one of them is whether to scan into a log or linear based file.

Attached is the same file as a linear TIFF and a log DPX.

If you are using a log based system such as Nucoda, you will probably get better results with the DPX file, if you are using something less high end, you might get better results with the TIFF.

I’ll be interested to see how people go with this.

Interesting, I thought they made it then scanned and animated it.

I know little about the SE, thanks for the info. It is mainly the lighting that is way off, I guess it’s more accurate to say the SE additions stand out like a sore thumb.

I already thought about doing this but since the original is being worked on in another project, I think it would be best to do the SE version first and then do a combined SE/IB Tech version.

That’s an interesting opinion because all the Tech prints I’ve seen have been relatively sharp and this SE print looks quite grainy and soft. Do you have any side by side examples that led you to this opinion?

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Yeah, so far this print looks softer than the IB, but some scenes are more ‘clear’ due to better composites, like the sabre training scene.

Dre, is that from the TIFF or the DPX?

Of course; that is to be expected since all of the special-effects shots were recomposited digitally.

Very impressive! You have a knack for making these prints shine.

Here’s another based on the DPX:

Here’s another version with the same grade applied to both the TIFF (top) and DPX (bottom) with a bit more shadow detail:

Overall the one based on the DPX looks better to me, but this is probably logical considering it’s a shadowy scene. The TIFF might take the edge for the brighter scenes outside.

If you can, can you make a video demonstration? I’m not trying to beg, it’s just that these scans look amazing on their own, and I’d love to see them in motion.

I feel like that’s probably a ways off, the scanning process itself only just began.

Annoyingly, a hair got into the gate of the scanner on Reel3, and I have to rescan the entire reel.

Part of the downside of working remotely.

sigh

Anyway, here is a 720P sample, complete with dancing hair, nothing done other than a very quick levels setting, thought people might want to see it in motion.

https://we.tl/zp0MntsHeh

Note the Technicolor-style cue-dots/reel markers at the end. It’s about 200MB in size, I tried to make the file size small enough for anyone to get a look at it.

A higher bitrate and bit-depth version is uploading now for those who want something bigger.

EDIT: It’s up. 1.5GB. https://we.tl/SxaAFMqUAg

Yeah, the color correction is all over the place. With your permission, when all the reels are scanned, I would like to perform a proper color correction. I will upload a sample tonight.

For comparison I did some regrades of the bluray based on NeverarGreat’s technicolor recreation:

Here’s what that frame from my project looks like:
Recreation
And here’s the SE scan corrected and luminosity matched to the Blu-ray:

You can see in the Blu-ray, there’s a gross blue cast across the chair and all of the highlights, whereas the scan actually has very good color.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

The bluecast can actually be quite easily be removed (and skin tones matched):
