Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why? — Page 5

I love when people say something odd and then completely ignore someone else who points out how odd it is despite quoting the very post where it was pointed out to them.

What? It has an old Laserdisc master of the unaltered 1977 cut, but the 1997SE was never released on DVD.

Amazon has a 2006 DVD SE that claims it has the original 1977 theatrical release. Wondering if any has seen this version and cant verify or refute Amazon’s description.

1997 no. 1977 yes. Good quality no. Embarrassing yes.

I think 1997 was probably a typo in his initial post. He’ll have to verify that though.

I call it Star Wars because that was the name of the movie for the first 20 years.

It was called “Star Wars” for only four years. “A New Hope” was added to the crawl in 1981.

It’s hard to say. Yes, “A New Hope” was added to the crawl in 1981, but that didn’t necessarily change the official title of the movie. All movie review publications I saw from back in the day (Leonard Maltin, Roger Ebert, etc…) listed it as just “Star Wars” well into the '90s. All pre-SE home video versions I have on VHS & Laserdisc just call it “Star Wars” on the front and on the spine… which includes the final Faces editions from 1995.

Unfortunately many modern databases refer to it as “A New Hope” though, which adds much confusion as to when the title officially changed, but I strongly feel that it became official with the first DVD releases. I wonder if the national film registry would have any kind of record of when the title changed? Not that I really care personally… I call it Star Wars, but I’m not offended with whatever anyone else wants to call it. 😃

The Faces tape actually did say Star Wars A New Hope on the sides and top flap of the cover and the cassette label.

My apologies for the error. You are correct. “A New Hope” is in small type (while “Empire” and “Jedi” are in the large type on their tapes) on the VHS release. However, the laserdisc release of Faces still just says “Star Wars” on both front and spine (and I just double-checked that to be sure).

So, worst case scenario… It was called just “Star Wars” for the first 18 years.

Nobody called it A New Hope until the 2000s. The episode title was on the crawl and some packaging post-1981 but as far as I’m aware, every television broadcast and every single person out of hundreds of millions who referred to it in popular culture always called it Star Wars.

I switch between ‘Star Wars’ and ‘A New Hope’ all the time.

To me, calling the first installment by the same name as the series as a whole is something that should always be avoided (I even call the original Legend of Zelda by its japanese name The Hyrule Fantasy). Given that we have been provided with an official title, I don’t see any reason not to use it. Not only is calling it Star Wars confusing (though admittedly only to non-fans), it’s awkward. You have Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and then just Star Wars? Or would you prefer Star Wars: Star Wars? Every entry in the saga has a subtitle. It seems counterintuitive for this one not to.

Unless there are people out there who only care about the very first movie (which I highly doubt), the point still applies, regardless whether or not they’re comfortable with the term “saga”.

Or simply call it Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of The Jedi and so on. What’s so hard about that?

My point is that it should be A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of The Jedi and so on. Of course I’m not gonna say Star Wars before every title. What I’m trying to say is that Star Wars should be the all-encompassing title of the series, and each movie should have its own title.

Just because I use words like “should”, doesn’t mean I’ll track down and kill everyone who doesn’t do as I say. It’s just my opinion.

Only a serial killer would say something like this.

I tend to call it A New Hope. Or Ep4 or ANH I never saw it in 77. sorry was not born yet.
I know, lame excuse but it was my parents fault. 😉
I tried just calling it Star Wars at one time but I had some one say. “witch one?”
I say the first one. And they say do you mean Ep1 or E4?
So I save time on witch one. That way if I have to explain why E4 is the first and EPs 1 2 3 were made after Eps 4 5 6 I won’t be so out of breath.

See this is exactly why I’m in favor of calling it ANH. Calling it SW is just plain confusing.
