This one has color correction but no foley for the Resistance base shot, just like the full quality version.

Isn’t the bearded pilot, in the beginning, the actor who played the cop in the original Heroes TV show?

He cut to much too my taste but I love the way he managed to logically keep the “Sergio Leone” shots during Obi vs Grievous scene (losing the cool exterior shot), as well as a few other things he’s the only one - as far as I know - to have altered that certain way (though I still don’t know why so many faneditors have cut “This is where the fun begins” line 😃).

Greg Grunberg is his name. He is Abrams’ childhood friend which is probably why you see him in most of his projects… The Force Awakens, (reboot) Star Trek etc. That’s pretty cool… not leaving your friend hanging.

I also like the Starkiller Edition, however I’d suggest something more in line with your Prequel Trilogy titles. What that would be, I have no idea.

HAL already said he’s not retiring retitling the movie like his PT edits.

Though if he were, I’d suggest Shadow[s] of the Empire, to keep the theme of using Legends novel titles. And the fact that it was the working title of Episode VII for a long time (the singular variation), according to (I think) Pablo Hidalgo.

JEDIT: damn autocorrect…

Well, even though the title isn’t going to be changed, if I were to do the other four saga films so far with EU-lifted titles, we’d have:

Rebel Dawn
Shadows of the Empire
Heir to the Jedi
The Force Unleashed

But, I think ‘The Force Awakens: Starkiller Edition’ works well for what this is. I don’t consider it an extension of the Hal9000 prequel edits, just manifesting an elegant idea from multiple places on the internet after the movie came out.

My stance on revising fan edits.

That’s fair enough Hal. Though you are missing out on some great titles mentioned here! 😉

Looking forward to the complete edit, V1 has a great flow to it with that change.

There is a minor thing I noticed which may or may not be a big deal.

So, now that we see the First Order essentially straight above instead of that … rem,“space time disruption”… Here is what I noticed

After that, there is that visually neat scene with the TIES coming in at the semi sunset background. So two things. One, they are coming from a distance … but the scene earlier shows the Star Destroyers and TIES straight above. Two, that scene in general, though cool looking, seem’s to be from a different time of the day, closer to sunset when prior, during and after is more like the middle of the day.

I just thought about it and am curious if others have noticed that?

It’s weird from a continuity perspective, which JJ notes in the commentary track.
For my part, it’s a “Deliberate Creative Decision” which doesn’t interact with the goals of this edit.

I am going to mess around with ya a bit more Hal … 😉

But since the movie has been restructured that the ships are now over head, the scene shows them now flying towards Maz’s place from the horizon and not straight down as the new scene applies.

Progress! Here’s the latest version of the Maz’s castle sequence. Thoughts?

https://youtu.be/TqZeT7FN0c0

Watching this again, I realize what I disliked from this sequence in the original film.

In the original and in this edit, Rey runs away and intends to keep running…into the forest? Forever? I understand that having a Force vision can be traumatic and everything, but it doesn’t seem in character for her to suddenly run away from both her destiny and a way back to Jakku. She’s too competent for this sort of thing. What would make more sense is if she ran outside to get some air and deal with the traumatic Force vision, with the intention of returning once she’d recovered.

So for this sequence, remove ‘I’m leaving…no, you can’t. They’ll help you’.
Then we’re left with 'What are you doing? BB-8, you have to go back. You’re too important.'
This makes it sound like she’s still dedicated to BB-8’s mission even if she doesn’t want anything to do with the Force vision.

I also think the scene would flow better if Rey stopped running before Finn sees the Finalizer, but there’s probably not enough footage to make that seem natural.

JEDIT: What might be more effective was if all she says is ‘We have to go back’, and then it cuts to Finn and Maz in the basement. This way Rey makes the decision to return without seeing the First Order ships, and only sees the attack when she gets back to the castle. It also shortens the time between Finn seeing the Finalizer and the inevitable attack.

I think she just runs because she’s overwhelmed and needs to be alone for a moment, and when she calms down she can think of an actual plan for leaving. With this in mind I think the scene works as it is. When she stops in the forest she doesn’t have a clear plan, just a feeling that she wants to get away. Before she has a chance to think any further BB-8 shows up, and she tells him she’s leaving. Then when she sees the attack she realizes she can’t leave her friends behind.

Your idea removes the “leaving” part, which I guess might make it easier to accept that she then goes back with BB-8 without much motivation (before she knows about the attack), but I feel like the point of her running into the forest in the first place was to show her strong urge to leave. So if we remove the idea of “leaving” the running away might seem even more random.

I agree with Ridley on this one, I don’t think it needs changing. Something like that is probably outside the scope of Restructured anyway.

It’s not a big deal either way - I love the edit regardless - but I had just realized why that scene never really worked for me. It’s one thing to want some space after a troubling revelation (and being a scavenger in a desolate wasteland, it makes sense to retreat to nature), but it’s quite another to abandon your current mission and call to adventure before thinking better of it less than a minute later. I understand the reasoning to reject the call, since Luke does the same thing in ANH, and if there were more time it would work better. But without the Starkiller firing to act as the ‘burning homestead’ moment for the audience, it may cause a bit of whiplash.

I think the reordering into a continuous action scene calls for more action and less indecision, but if it’s beyond the scope of this edit, I’ll put it down as another change in the Starlight Project 😉

Yeah, I see your point. It’s probably worth a try, to see how it works in practice.

That being said, where are you with the shots that you were working on? There hasn’t been an update on this edit in a while

Here’s a mockup of the scene without Rey’s running away lines:

I tried to do something different with the cuts and music before her lines, but Ridley’s version is better in that regard. I think the line omissions could work though.

One thing I thought of after uploading - The shot where Rey sees the attack force is worse than superfluous, now that we see the Finalizer. It also makes no tactical sense for Rey to go back to the castle since she has no hope of outrunning fighters that are already overhead, and indeed we see the results of her tactical error directly afterward.

Instead, she could look up into a deceptively clear sky, alerted by the sound of distant TIE fighters. This would also be a callback to the similar situation on Jakku - an organic form of character growth. The Apocalypse Now TIES would tie (sorry) into this idea, and it would make sense to seek shelter in the castle.

It’s funny, how many problems (and solutions) can cascade from a gentle restructure.
