As I stated before, the torpedo sound in Balance of Terror is missing. Also, the computer voice is missing early into The Menagerie Part 1.

That sounds mix was straight out of the 16mm print of Balance Of Terror, even though the opening credits did not use the original music.

Is there some expert who has an (almost) full list of audio changes in TOS?

Does anybody have access to the “correct” or “original” mono mixes? The DVD set I have is 5.1, and you say that the original mono mixes on the Blu-ray are not original…

Most of the bluray set is correct, but some episodes have 5.1 folddowns to mono by mistake. Someone would have to compile a list of which ones those were (you can easily tell from the recording of the opening theme.) Then they would have to dig out the single episode DVDs or the laserdiscs.

Duel (1971) - The Hybrid Cut
The Phantom of the Opera - 1925 Version Reconstruction - Rare Scores Collection - Roy Budd Score

Okay then. I’m only gonna do it for certain episodes. Thanks! 😃

Here is the list of episodes I’ll be tackling.

Where No Man Has Gone Before
The Naked Time
Balance Of Terror
Arena
The Alternative Factor (One of the worst episodes of Star Trek TOS and the worst of the first season)
For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky

After watching the BD set there did seem to be a handful of moments that felt like folddowns and certainly a few times where the opening theme was replaced by a fold of the new rerecording.

As far as a good mono source the best I can find would likely be the rare Japanese LD box sets which had pcm mono as opposed to the analog only US releases.

An official restoration isn’t happening any time soon, as those early DCAU cartoons were edited on video. It’d take a lot of effort to get it done. Maybe they will sometime, but I don’t think the demand is there.

I wouldn’t mind an upscale project, but the DVDs suit me just fine for now.

You can provide an HD upscale of the DVDs if you want.

Oh, yes. I forgot to mention The Doomsday Machine, which is my second favorite episode of the show.

I have a little “philosophical” question. What would you consider to be “restored original” version?
In other words, what is OK and what isn’t.

  • In the early episodes every episode had different opening credits. This was changed for the syndicated versions, every episode has the same opening credits. These “new” opening credits are on the Blu-ray set, the DVD set has the “old” credits. Is it worth changing?
  • in many, and I mean MANY Enterprise shots thanks to the blue spill problem some parts of the ship get transparent. Should it be fixed (at least in the cases for which we have the original blue screen shots)?
  • some of the wrong effects were fixed in the syndication version - good example is The Naked Time, the shots of the planet. Should it be “fixed” to the “unfixed” version?

I say restore.

Can you not afford the BD sets or a drive?

It’s not that. I do have the Blu-Ray sets on my shelf, but it’s impossible to rip them.
