Why not, it’s not like the anthem can be upset about it. Who is it hurting?

What’s the difference? Protest is protest.

Yes, sitting down for the national anthem is just as horrible as claiming gay people are subhuman.

This conversation won’t go anywhere if we keep getting to dead ends like this.

Then what were you trying to say? That protesting the anthem is an ‘ignoble’ protest of some sort? Because you’re gonna have to convince me.
You think whatever you want. If you don’t already know why protesting the national anthem is wrong, I can’t help you.

What, no “soldiers DIED for that flag!” or anything?
I love this thread. I’ve said that before, right? 'Cause I do – I really, really, really do. With sugar and spice and everything nice on it.

no.
I’d really like to hear why you think it’s wrong to protest the National Anthem. So far all I see is you saying “It’s wrong because it’s wrong,” with no reasoning as to why it’s wrong.
Because it stands for things that he’s decided it stands for, mainly it being a sacred song that cannot be protested under any circumstance.

Where were you in '77?
The national anthem didn’t even become the official anthem until 1931. It’s hard for me to get too worked up about it… frankly it’s not even a very good song. I wish “America the Beautiful” were our anthem - it’s a better tune and a better message. The anthem is mainly that we’re great because we win wars. America the Beautiful describes a place anyone would want to live.

It’s got a bitchin’ tune, though (which makes sense).
If they played the Team America theme song at a game I think people would dance in the bleachers.

Agreed.

Also agreed.
I don’t blame them for kneeling for the anthem because I think it’s a ridiculous and inappropriate ritual for a sporting event. You don’t play the national anthem before a rock concert. I still hate them because I hate it when rich people complain about how bad they have it while simultaneously doing absolutely nothing other than a publicity stunt to combat the problem they’re pretending to care about, but I don’t hate them for kneeling during the anthem.
The Person in Question

100% agree.

I answered this last year in the original politics thread. Here is what I said:
I’ll tell you why it upsets me. When the National Anthem is played, it is not a time to make a political statement, it is a time to show respect for the country. There are 1001 ways Kaepernick could protest but no, he has to pick this one. He has to turn the playing of the National Anthem into a time to make political statements and protests. This won’t be only protest during the National Anthem, this has started a trend and now everyone will jump on the band wagon. Don’t like the President? protest the Anthem. Don’t like the current foreign and/or domestic of this country? protest the Anthem. Don’t like a certain law? protest the Anthem. You don’t like Congress? protest the Anthem. Want to save the spotted owl? protest the Anthem. That is what this will turn into. In my opinion, the Anthem should be above the politics of the day. The Anthem and flag aren’t about what is going with current politics. They aren’t about Obama or the Democrats or the Republicans or the current policy of the day. They symbolize America. Freedom, justice, rights, equality. They symbolize the ideal, not necessary what the current politicians are doing. And yes, they symbolize all the sacrificing and fighting and dying done to make this country and to preserve it. To me, when you protest the National Anthem, you are not protesting the bad cops and racists and whatnot, you are protesting the idea of America. You are protesting what makes this nation great. You protesting those that sacrificed to make this nation great. Finally to me, it is just an unwritten rule that years ago, no one would have thought of breaking: You don’t protest things like the flag or the Nation Anthem. You just don’t do it. It classless.
