Is it really too far fetched to think that maybe statues of Jefferson and Washington might also have to go?

Yes, it is.

And by the way…

Lori Vermeulen, Stockton’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Thursday in a letter to the campus community that the bust’s removal was temporary, and that there are plans to incorporate it in an exhibit that will show Richard Stockton’s role from a more historical perspective.

If they were just throwing it in the trash, that would bother me. But I’m fine with this.

if you say so. Btw, who are you to judge? You’re white and privileged. Maybe the fate of Jefferson and Washington should be left up to people of color to decide, right? After all, we don’t know how it feels to have monuments to people who enslaved our ancestors.

It is the very same thing they are talking about doing with the Confederate Monuments, putting them in a museum.

My point is, the only reason they are taking this guy’s bust down is because he owned slaves. Therefore owning slaves now enough to justify removing monuments.

I assume you are being sarcastic.

Well, a local college has decided to remove bust of a founding father. The reason? He was slave owner, just like Jefferson and Washington.

What I want to know is why the they are removing the bust, yet keeping the school named after him.

From the article:

I do think they are overreacting. Trumpy will probably unfortunately exploit this. Not that he ever heard of Stockton before.

Hell, I’ve never heard of Stockton before.

I’m pretty sure you’re in the minority there.

Well, I am sure a lot of historians know about him. I guess the first time I ever heard of the guy was from the movie 1776. At the beginning of the movie, everyone in congress wonders where the representatives from New Jersey are. A little bit later, 3 representatives from NJ arrive, announcing that the old delegation was recalled and new one sent in its place. One of the the three was Richard Stockton. The other two were John Witherspoon and Francis Hopkinson. It turned the royal governor of NJ(Ben Franklin’s son) was arrested and the new delegation was instructed to vote in favor of Independence.

Now things are just getting stupid.

For those idiots who’ve never seen the movie, spoiler alert the North wins the Civil War.

Yeah I agree, that’s pretty dumb.

Although, with that said, I’m just guessing because I’ve never actually seen Gone With the Wind.

This is the kind of shit I’m talking about when I say that people who are irrationally offended by things should be ignored and discounted completely. Anyone who believes that a theatre should not screen Gone with the Wind, a nearly 100 year-old classic film, because it depicts the antebellum South should be ignored and mocked for their sheer stupidity. I don’t care if they’re offended because it’s an appallingly idiotic thing to be offended by.

Obviously it’s silly, but let me play devil’s advocate. They played the film this month, and there was a poor response from audiences. Audiences didn’t want to see it next year, so they swapped it out - the reason why is almost secondary.

As to that reason why, ever since I first saw it when I was a kid, the film’s glorification of the antebellum South bothered me. It’s of course a classic, and it needs to be seen, but there are other ways to see it. Let me put it this way: if it played at my local theater, I’d skip it and wait till the next screening.

Was it really from people who saw the movie? Or social media savvy trolls? Because I doubt theater do comment cards in 2017. Fake accounts on twitter are a thing, I imagine facebook has them too.

Who’s to say? Though it’s not hard to imagine people sitting that one out. Why play Gone With the Wind if more people will show up to Lawrence of Arabia?

Why announce a year in advance the movie isn’t coming back? The whole thing smells fishy.

And somebody will get offended by LOA, you can count on it.

One theater chain out here has booked every one of those privately financed “documentaries” chock full of nuttiness about Democrats, Hillary, and Obama in recent years. I don’t have afreaking cow over it. I shrug and go see something else that’s also fictional but much more entertaining. 😉
