We don’t see people remotely dressed like this on Taootine in the the original film, let alone the facepaint.

I suppose, but as there are supposed to be only so many pockets of civilization on Tatooine, would there be that many differences? Of course, George may have wanted to dodge the whole Jedi robes look a lot like Tatooine farmer clothing issue. 😉

The crowds may have been fake, but at least it was a practical effect. 😉

Huh, a Prince Xizor figure was in an actual Star Wars movie.

Not enough people read the EU.

Carrying on a bit of tradition as around the time of Raiders and ROTJ, Kenner figures and some SW model kits were being utilized by ILM.

Frink’s version of the Pod Race scene is pretty good.

You’re only saying that because it lasts 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes. 😉

I was sick yesterday, (got my wisdom teeth out), so I watched The Phantom Menace, probably my favourtie of the prequels (not saying much). It was worse than I remember. The whole film lacks energy. It seems bored with itself. The force is bored, Obi-wan is bored, Qui-gon is in the midst of galactic turmoil but doesn’t care, Anakin’s whole life is getting turned around and all he does is shed a few alligator tears for his mom. The nemoidians don’t seem to care much either; I’m not even sure what’s at stake for them. The Jedis seem bored and uninterested as well. Anakin is “dangerous”, whatever that means, but Yoda says “eh, we’ll train him, whatever”.

Jabba the Hutt falling asleep at the podrace is basically an apt metaphor for the whole movie. It’s own characters don’t seem to care about the events taking place.

Anyway, rant over.

There was one thing that Phantom Menace had going for it–the special effects. The practical sets used in the movie look pretty good. Scenes like the podrace, Naboo, all look fantastic.

Too bad George decided to ditch it all and go full on videogame by the time Attack of the Clones rolled around.

As a direct answer to OP, it depends on the film.

I was born in 1999 so I didn’t get to see TPM when it first came out, though I did go see it when the re-released it in 3D and actually got very exited to see the OT 3D and re-release it in theaters. I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed in my life. The main point I’m trying to get across here is that I saw all 3 prequel films in theaters as a kid/early teen and the have a certain level of nostalgia for me. That being said they don’t hold up very well.

TPM to me has always been empty popcorn junk for me. I can sit down and watch the film and not be too terribly bored until they get to Coruscant. Then the movie REALLY slows the f*ck down to the point that it’s actually unbearable. Then picks back up when they finally go back to Naboo. Kiddie Darth Vader always bothered me and Jar-Jar Binks is downright insulting but I find it to be at least watchable. The pod-race is fun and interesting (at least the original version, good god did they butcher the pod-race in the DVD and Blu-Ray).

AOTC is completely insufferable. It’s actually worse than seeing blood in your urine. There is not a single thing to latch onto throughout the whole movie dude. ALL of the characters are terrible, all the dialogue is forced and terrible, the plot is convoluted and it’s just boring to sit through. I feel like I’m torturing myself every time I watch it. I pray to God every time I see it that the government will kidnap me and waterboard me just so I can get my mind off of that stupid movie. It’s that bad.

ROTS is a mixed bag for me. On one hand I really enjoy seeing the Emperor “subtly” (big air quotes on that one) manipulating Anakin. The first 20-30 minutes of that film are awesome. The middle act gets a little shaky and starts to fall apart, but it still kind of works. The last hour/hour and a half of that movie just slip right back into mediocrity. The ending of that movie is awkward, forced and contrived. The entire Obi-Wan Anakin duel is overblown and it feels like I’m watching George Lucas jerk off his digital animators, and the Yoda Emperor duel is so goofy, awkward, terrible kiddie garbage in an otherwise decent dark toned movie about a “good”-guy that turns bad. And don’t get me started on the “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”. Jesus Christ the end of that movie gives me a brain aneurysm.

Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer

I haven’t watched the Prequels in years, since 2011 I think. It was when the Blu-Rays came out and the DVDs went OOP and shot up in price. I sold the PT to some fool for a ton of money and never looked back. I did watch Clone Wars on Netflix when they gave me a free month.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I always liked ROTS in comparison to the other 2, however I do find it to share many of the same flaws. I do think TCW TV series improve the movie quite significantly though.

I was talking about the close-ups with the worse-than-Cantina rubber masks.

Yeah, some of those guys probably should never have been seen in closeup.

The “human” extras bug me a bit.

Dude is sitting next to a squid alien. Plainly an out-of-towner, popping into a seedy locale to see a low class sporting event.

These three films amount to a large pile of steaming-hot excrement. It’s the fans that have to shovel this stuff. Christ, what a mess.

On the shovel … Yes. On the films … No.

Agreed. But why do the fans have to shovel this stuff? I just leave it alone.

Canon-obsessed fans who can’t or won’t leave the PT alone. Trying to make everything fit in with the OT or worse - the other way round.

I don’t have a problem ignoring these films.

Of course they aren’t terrible. They’re just terrible compared to the originals.

Pretty much my opinion. I’ve seen a lot of movies. They aren’t great by any means, but they aren’t that bad either compared to some out there. They are fun to watch, but when you dig below the surface, their failings are easy to see. And what have many Star Wars fans spent decades doing? digging. So we are more painfully aware of the flaws than most people. The casual viewer is not going to see all the flaws we do. All three of the PT were huge blockbusters - record setters in ticket sales. They were hugely popular movies. Bigger in some ways than the OT. They just don’t have the staying power because they are flawed and those who love the OT have various views on the level of bad those flaws drop these films to. They are Lucas at his worst, which I think is better than many other directors at their best.

This is why the term ‘‘fanboy’’ applies more accurately to people who are still complaining about the PT then people who still like them.

I just heard of anti cheese prequels edits, is there anyway to view them since they haver been blocked on utube?
