What did you think the Clone Wars were gonna be?

Did'nt know it was a mystery to me as a child but unfortuanatly my imagination of it is ruined by Lucas by subjecting to me the awful Attack of the Clowns.

Now they're "cheap stormtrooper army".
Did you noticed how ROTS finally destroyed the "menacing" image of the droid army? It was already rather weak ("roger, roger" lol) and the AATs were no match to the awe-inspiring Imperial AT-ATs. But the remaining "bad-ass" design, the Battle Droid, are now turned in some silly metal cans. Only the Droideka (Destroyer Droid) retained its coolness.
This was all planned by GL - after all, TPM should not be too "scary" or it would scare away the kids... go figure...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

And the Jedi would lead host of armies from planets from all over the galaxy. Jedi leading wookiees, ithorians, mon calamari and so forth.
When you think about that, that sounds like one kickass idea......and then it makes you wonder why I came up with it and not LucASS!!!!
Fucking dolt!!!

A war in which the Republic/jedis fights rogue sith-influenced system who have a new dangerous technology: clones!
I always dreamed to see the battle between the jedis and the mandalorian warriors ( where Boba Fett gets his armor),space battles with Z95 fighters.
And where Anakin meets OB1 at the end of CloneWars, and is only 5 years younger than him.

I was absolutely pissed when LucASS just glazed over the Mandalorian Warriors. Going into Episode 2, I was hoping he was gonna have a big battle (or at least leave us thinking there would be one) between the Jedi and a whole host of Mandalorian Warriors.
That is the one thing that I was so damn PISSED about!!!! I wanted to see why these dudes were supposed to be so badass!!! I expected armor that was lightsaber resistant and so forth. But all we got was that lame-ass fight between Jango and Obi-Wan.
Oh well....I'm sure to LucASS, it was "good enough."

Sorry for the thread bump, but thought I’d post here rather than start a new thread.
I remember thinking the Clone Wars were fought over the ethical and practical applications of clones. That greedy and slave profiteers like the Clone Masters recruited Mandalorians to fight for them and lead their clone fighters, due to their historical fights and dislike of the Jedi. The Mandalorians were basically mercenaries, and were willing to be cloned by the clone masters in return for money, better weapon technology, and a chance to fight with the Clone Armies at their side vs the Jedi and the smaller force of the Republic military.
Jedi were wandering ronins, going around and righting wrongs and injustice. Like in a Kurosawa film, or like King Arthur’s Knights. Far from what we saw in the PT films with the Jedi hierarchy and being close to the Senate but not with the people in The Republic. No ban on attachments, having families and children and so on.
Anakin never knew or met Yoda, just that Yoda once taught Obi-Wan. I remember guessing that The Emperor could be a fallen Jedi, and maybe that is how he turned Anakin, knowing what heartstrings to pull, the Jedi’s strengths, weaknesses, what to prey on to get him see things from his point of view, and turn him to the dark side.
The whole thing would be more mystical feel than we got later in the PT films. More of a “we can’t solve our differences with a lightsaber, but with our knowledge of the force” with characters like Dooku vs Yoda, and not the other way around like we actually saw in the PT.
That Padme suspected Anakin of beginning to turn to the dark side. Maybe even luring and killing Jedi? Betraying them? She already had Luke and Leia. I think that was based on those mid 90’s paintings for the Topps cards.
The Clone masters, or Mandalorians had secretly managed to somehow learn how reprogram droids in The Republic to rebel and kill their Republic masters. Resulting in millions of deaths before these errant droids on the rampage were somehow stopped. And that is why some people are seen not to trust droids, that droids have restraining bolts, or limits placed on them and what they can do.
Edit: there is more on this, and the pre-PT era lore in general, in this new thread:

“Don’t tell anyone… but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories - let’s call them homages - and you’ve got a series.” - George Lucas

Some of this was hinted at in the Thrawn novels if I remember correctly and books like Children of the Jedi. It would have been a far more interesting and coherent version of the conflict IMO, and it almost seemed like Lucas made the clones warriors of the Republic just to subvert expectations.

I always felt like he chose clones vs robots so that a giant war full of casualties would be family friendly. Actual clone conspiracies or anything too sinister wouldn’t get the merch sales.

There’s that as well, but I’ve always found it a strange and horrifying implication that a clone’s death is more justifiable than the death of a more ‘normal’ person. I’ve even seen people online specifically saying that clones aren’t really people, so it’s okay that they are dying by the thousands.
I honestly would have just preferred it if George had given us a Republic army vs Clones, because at least then there would be no denying that this war was waged at horrible human cost, no matter how a person viewed the clones. As it is, the ‘family friendly’ marketing of droids vs clones implies that clones are less than a true person, and for me is far more ethically insidious than just admitting that war is inseparable from atrocity.

No no no, you don’t get it, it’s to show how the Jedi have lost their touch, how far the Jedi have fallen! (from what? we don’t know)

I thought the clone wars were plural because they were a number of conflicts that all kind of sprang up at once or close together due to cloning being invented or made easier somehow. Any group of systems, warlord or terrorist cell suddenly had the capability to make a clone army, and it destabilized the whole galaxy until cloning was somehow banned or prevented or all the would-be rogue cloners (what the Thrawn books call the Clone Masters) were dealt with. It would have been even more chaotic because you could use clones to impersonate people and sow confusion and paranoia.

Literally any fan speculation about the Clone Wars is likely to be cooler than what Lucas actually came up with in 2002.
Like everyone else, I imagined some awesome galactic conflict with massive clone armies controlled by distant alien factions trying to overthrow the Republic, along with clone-based subterfuge and political intrigue (cloning of Senators or Jedi - with some darker elements like cloned Jedi going insane).
I did not imagine that the clones were boring CGI Stormtroopers created under bullshit circumstances for the Republic to use at the last minute to fight some equally boring CGI robots as part of an under-explained civil war, and that every single clone was actually Boba Fett’s dad.
Anyway, pre-Prequel ideas about the Clone Wars always fascinated me because while many of these ideas are traceable to pre-1999 EU publications, some of these ideas are actually examples of pre-Internet “memes”. These were orally-communicated “memes” whose origin is forever lost to time, yet are somehow consistently known by many people of a certain age group across multiple regions/countries. These memes were spread on playgrounds, fan gatherings, and mail-based fan publications, in a way similar to how stories and myths were spread in pre-literate cultures. Similar to childhood songs that somehow every kid of a certain age knew (“Jingle Bells, Batman Smells”), the idea that Obi Wan Kenobi was actually OB-1 the clone is a pre-Internet meme that was remarkably wide-spread before the Internet, and remains well known to this day. Every Star Wars fan in the 80s and 90s somehow “knew a guy” that told them about this theory. (Of course it turned out to be false, and I’m glad, because it’s stupid.)
