Why is this suddenly a big deal? Even Nixon was called Mr. President long after resigning. Simply a sign of respect. I think people are smart enough to know who’s currently in office and who’s not.

It’s big deal because of the argument…

“Obama shouldn’t be doing things that every other President before him has done (To which I had no objection). To be clear, it’s not because he’s black. It’s the same as the birth certificate. Obama needed to produce his, every other President did not. Just to reiterate, it’s not because he is black”

In other news, I saw this on twitter…

…with the quote “When Theresa May met Justin Trudeau”.

I think the reason Zuckerberg could be a candidate despite his being inexperienced like Trump, is that many think that one of Trump’s main problems is that he isn’t smart, whereas Zuckerberg is. At this point, I don’t think people are bemoaning Trump’s lack of experience… that’s the least of his issues.

“A lot of people don’t have principles, but I do. I’m a highly principled person!”

That does sound like something Trump would say.

Just pointing out that those are from over a year ago. Could have sworn I posted one or two of them in here.

Sidenote: This is not to be anti-Google or pro-Apple or pro-/anti-anything. These sorts of ideas exist in many many companies in this country and I’m sure just as many abroad. I am 100% sure that Apple might have these problems in the same amount or maybe even worse. This happens to all corporations. It’s a systemic issue.

Googlers,

I’m Danielle, Google’s brand new VP of Diversity, Integrity & Governance.

I’m not going to link to it here as it’s not a viewpoint that I or this company endorses, promotes or encourages.

I found myself agreeing with one of the guy’s main arguments, which is that there is a specific difference in gender regarding whether a person has an interest in people as opposed to things. See this for why that is, and a fascinating look at just the sort of problem this guy has encountered at Google. In short, there is a huge difference in genders in this specific area, and the cause for this single difference may be more biological than cultural. This in turn could force a company to resort to ever more aggressive policing of microagressions and perceived sexism in an attempt to attract more women to an area of a company that realistically will never reach complete employment equality.

Now, the 10 page ‘screed’ has many other issues and I’m not defending them, but it seems like the response to the essay is as problematic as the essay itself. I’ve found that a good rule of thumb for anyone interested in a serious discussion online is to always assume the best of the person you’re debating, and always seek to de-escalate the conversation in order to avoid ad homninems and other petty attacks. I find it concerning that the comments for this airing of grievances do not attempt this sort of thing, but are exactly the type of virtue-signaling that conservatives hate about liberals.

And yes, I get the issue that a member of a privileged group is complaining that his privilege is under attack, and I have no interest in defending his privileged status. But he clearly thinks there’s a problem, and a whole lot of people who elected our current government feel the same way. At some point it becomes counterproductive to antagonize conservatives for losing the culture wars, and it becomes important to find some common ground. This isn’t a zero sum game.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Medium alert:

(1) Despite speaking very authoritatively, the author does not appear to understand gender.

(2) Perhaps more interestingly, the author does not appear to understand engineering.

(3) And most seriously, the author does not appear to understand the consequences of what he wrote, either for others or himself.

What you just did was incredibly stupid and harmful. You just put out a manifesto inside the company arguing that some large fraction of your colleagues are at root not good enough to do their jobs, and that they’re only being kept in their jobs because of some political ideas. And worse than simply thinking these things or saying them in private, you’ve said them in a way that’s tried to legitimize this kind of thing across the company, causing other people to get up and say “wait, is that right?”

I need to be very clear here: not only was nearly everything you said in that document wrong, the fact that you did that has caused significant harm to people across this company, and to the company’s entire ability to function. And being aware of that kind of consequence is also part of your job, as in fact it would be at pretty much any other job. I am no longer even at the company and I’ve had to spend half of the past day talking to people and cleaning up the mess you’ve made. I can’t even imagine how much time and emotional energy has been sunk into this, not to mention reputational harm more broadly.

You talked about a need for discussion about ideas; you need to learn the difference between “I think we should adopt Go as our primary language” and “I think one-third of my colleagues are either biologically unsuited to do their jobs, or if not are exceptions and should be suspected of such until they can prove otherwise to each and every person’s satisfaction.” Not all ideas are the same, and not all conversations about ideas even have basic legitimacy.

I always appreciate efforts to find common ground with conservatives like myself and think that you eloquently explained why it is so important to try to promote fruitful discussion and civil discourse.

The so-called culture war is fought almost entirely online by the most despicable people on both sides. Average conservatives and liberals in America aren’t engaging in any such battle. The extreme alt-right and SJW types both fail to realize that nobody outside of their insular communities likes them.

Tell that to all the gay people who can now get married.

Or to the women who can now vote.

Or to the black people who can now go to white schools.
