I’m a hundred pages in Aftermath: Life Debt and the author has turned Sinjir into a sassy, whiny, gay stereotype, which is pissing me off. Also, they’ve gone back to using “kriff” as an expletive.

Gotta love a LGBT-friendly culture which still doesn’t know how to write realistic LGBT characters.

I quit reading Life Debt because good god was it bloody awful. I didn’t expect it to make the first book look amazing, but it did.

That stereotype is one for a reason. There are a ton of bitchy queens in the gay world, this is coming from a friend of Dorothy btw.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Reading through Thrawn at the moment, and while I enjoy it a hell of a lot better than Aftermath: Life Debt, I think reading it straight after the Thrawn trilogy was a mistake, because those books are so good, yet this new one is a little sloggish. It also doesn’t help that I have the Dark Tide duology waiting for me, which I read a bit of and was very positive about.

Yeah, Thrawn was cool, but it’s pretty low-key compared to the original books. I wasn’t wild about Dark Tide because I really hate Corran Horn, but it was worthwhile just to get to Luceno’s Han-centric duology immediately after.

Amazon is having a Kindle/Comixology sale on all Marvel trades, if you want to read the comics, they’re like $2 for a trade (which is like 5-6 issues).

Star Wars Ongoing

Darth Vader

Those were the original main two. The rest of them are also out there for cheap. They’re readable on a Kindle app or Comixology.

I just read A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy. An interesting (and decidedly pre-Rogue One) take on Star Wars.

I was delighted how much of Brian Daley’s radio drama she included.

Good news: Han totally shot only. Bad news: The Death Star explosion has rings.

The structure was interesting because putting Luke’s POV last meant there was a lot of the beginning of the movie she doubled back to tell.

Best line never on screen: Ben uses a Force distraction to get Our Heroes from the Falcon to the control room. Han says “How did you do that?” Ben replies, drier than the Dune Sea, “Simple tricks and nonsense.”

I’ve started the Empire book that comes next. I’m not liking it as much.

I began Rebel Rising and it’s just too depressing.

Spent much of this weekend catching up on comics. I don’t understand the big deal people seem to be making over the new Darth Vader series, but I liked the Star Wars/Doctor Aphra crossover arc The Screaming Citadel quite a lot. Aphra has really become one of my favorite characters overall at this point.

Also, two more comics were announced at SDCC: a Mace Windu miniseries (yawn) and an adaptation of Zahn’s Thrawn (which I’m sure will be neat, but I’d rather a new story with Thrawn and Vanto).

The new Vader series is PT era. That’s it. The Tumblr PT Justice Warriors are so thirsty they will accept anything.

I like it! I’ve wondered about that bit of unseen action several times before.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

anyone else pissed that they aren’t bringing back more things from legends?, i appreciate things like thrawn and his body gaurd being brought back but i dont like how they keep making new planets when there are plenty of planets from legends to choose from, i mean did they really need to make jakku and scarrif when they could of just as well used legends planets (i understand disney are trying to make star wars their own thing but as ashoka says “there’s always a bit of truth in legends”)

I dislike that they bringing the wrong things back from Legends. I want characters like Exar Kun and Mara Jade reintroduced, not trivialities like Evazan as a mad scientist.

I wish they’d kind of re-write a lot of the stuff from Legends, instead of either bringing it back or just leaving it alone, such as the first encounter between Obi-Wan and Anakin, and Asajj Ventress. In The Clone Wars, it’s clear they’ve met before, and while back when the show first started the comic where they meet on Ohma-D’un for the first time was still canon, now it isn’t so I would like a book or comic where they meet up for the first time. Anakin could feasibly get his scar in that, since he has that at the start of the show too.

I think they’d have a major success on their hands if they did a side film focusing on Mara Jade. Go with the early stories before she was part of the Luke narrative. Allegiance or Choices Of One. They’d be able to name-check the franchise, have stormtroopers, light sabers usage, new characters, merchandise tie-ins, etc.

Mara Jade* is still in my headcanon unless a future movie reveals a character (like Rey) is the daughter of Luke and Not-Mara-Jade.

Anyway, I don’t care about whether they bring back old Legends stuff. The mental-gymnastics I perform to maintain my own canon are actually kinda fun.

*I’ve not read any material with her outside the original Thrawn Trilogy, which is still mostly in my headcanon aside from the Solo twins. A lot can happen between the time of those books and TFA, including death or disappearance.

It seems given Luke’s status in the ST that if they ever brought back Mara they’d need to scrap everything after they got married at the end of Hand of Thrawn. I think that would be very workable, though. There’s plenty of OT-era stuff before she even met Luke, and they didn’t even become romantically involved until the very end of the Bantam era.

I see we’re all still ignoring Callista.

Actually, “the one where Luke falls in love with a computer” is one of my favorite things to casually reference when talking to friends who weren’t into the EU.

I quite like her introduction in the EU, much more than Mara. Never got around to reading the rest of her books though.

They never went anywhere worthwhile with the character.
