Star Wars references in other movies

Got me thinking: what other movies feature Star Wars references? There must be hundreds. So, as an exercise to demonstrate how much Star Wars has influenced popular culture (and because I'm feeling a bit geeky today) here's a few I can think of:

Spaceballs
Obvious one; the whole movie is a Star Wars spoof.

Chicken Run
When Rocky sees the pie-making machine for the first time, he exclaims "look at the size of that thing!"

Toy Story
Buzz makes reference to a weapon poised at the edge of the galaxy, with the destructive capacity to destroy an entire planet.

Toy Story 2
Emporer Zurg delivers the line "no, I am your father" Darth Vader style to Buzz.
Also several of the sound effects in the opening computer game sequence are lifted out of the Star Wars movies.

Back to the Future
When Marty dresses up as an alien to convince George to ask Lorraine out, he says his name is Darth Vader.

Gremlins
Some gremlins are seen playing the Atari Star Wars arcade game in the bar scene.

E.T.
Elliot shows ET his collection of Star Wars figures. Elsewhere in the film Michael imitates Yoda's voice.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Not an obvious one, but apparently Artoo and Threepio are depicted in some of the heirogliphics on the walls of the map room. (?)

Space Camp
That annoying little kid wanted to go into space because of the Star Wars movies.

Clerks
That famous dialogue where Randal explains to Dante how he didn't like the fact that all the innocent contractors working on Death Star 2 were killed when Lando destroyed it.

Reign of Fire
In the post-apocalyptic future world dominated by dragons, there are no cinemas or TV, so the elders entertain the children by acting out a scene from TESB.

The X Files Movie
One of the locations in the movie is Tatouine, Tunisia - which of course was the location used for filming the scenes on the planet Tatooine.

Nothing to add yet as its very comprehensive, but here's a detail from the Raiders reference:

Ok, not a movie it is, but in the game "World of warcraft" some obivious references to Star Wars are too.

Chasing Amy (another Kevin smith movie....actually, every KS film is loaded with SW stuff)
There's a part in the beginning where Hooper-X is doing a discussion panel at a comic convention. Then Ben Affleck heckles him from the audience..."That's a bunch of horseshit....Lando Calrissian was a black guy and he got to fly the Millennium Falcon!!!"

What follows is the absolutely funniest Star Wars references I have ever heard.....

"What's a nubian?"

Explorers (another 80s sci-fi kid movie)
One of the kids put on this mask that makes him look a little like Vader and he uses his flashlight like a lightsaber.

Absolutely great scene... made even more funny when you consider GL later decided that people/things from the planet Naboo- instead of being 'Nabooian' or 'Nabian'- were instead 'nubian'! Adds a whole new dimension!

Just remembered another:

Austin Powers 2
Dr. Evil builds a giant laser on the moon to turn it into what he calls "a Death Star". Scott sniggers and makes "Darth" and "rip-off" comments.

I saw Chasing Amy after I had seen Episode 1, but when I heard it in Amy, it clicked right away. So GL must be a KS fan of sorts....

I just hope the rumors are false about KS working on the SW TV Show. KS is good in his own genre, but he sucks when he tried to write comics.

Not to digress on KS too much, but I find him a really odd nut- the dialogue in his films wavers from brilliant and hilarious to mediocre and several articles on a variety of subject that he's written have been very good as well. BUT, that said, I've heard mixed reviews for his comics work (I've never read any of his) and it seems if he strays too far from 'genre' he created in his firest few films his work gets worse.

If you've ever seen the 'Evening With Kevin Smith' DVD though you might agree with me that he's an extremely engaging speaker on a variety of subjects.

Well....an example of his comic book writing is the Green Arrow series he did. I'm not a fan of Green Arrow and don't know much about GA, so I can't judge on how the character should have been written. But the series did have appearences by a whole host of other DC Comics characters.....one was Batman. And believe me....I KNOW Batman......my closet is filled to the ceiling with Batman comics. Star Wars and Batman have been my two great interests. And I have to say that KS wrote the most abysmal Batman you could ever read in your life. He had Batman sounding like Mr. Spock!!! I remember one scene goes something like this....

One character: How long did it take you to figure that one out, Bats?
Batman: It took me exactly 1.35 seconds.

I read that and said WTF!!!!!!!
Batman does not talk like that and NEVER talked like that.

So, if he writes anything for the SW TV show....consider yourselves warned!!!

He has yet to do a film that is outside of his genre.....which is these quirky kind of dialogue driven comedies.

Thanks for the heads-up on the comics- it does sound a bit odd...

I didn't see KS's latest film, 'Jersey Girl' (did anyone? lol), but didn't think it was part of the whole 'Jay and Silent Bob' set of films and style.

i actually saw part of 'Jersey Girl' maybe the first 15-20 minutes...minus maybe 5 minutes in the beginning. From what i saw it looked like the overall plot of the story was pretty good, cant really speak for its execution as all i really saw was really the start of the character development and all that fun stuff.

I def wouldnt put it in the Jay & Silent Bob set of films and style though.

I haven't seen it yet, but it is the same style of comedies as he normally does....but it did not have Jay and Silent Bob in it, so it is not a part of the previous 5 movies.

Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy are known as the Jersey Trilogy among KS fans. Dogma and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back are sort of tie-ins to the trilogy. Dogma and JASBSB are sort of continuations of what happens to J & SB after their appearence in Chasing Amy.

All five films are considered part of the View Askew-niverse, which all share characters and situations, a la comic book stuff like Marvel and DC (Spidey and the X-Men are part of the Marvel Universe while Batman and Supes are part of the DC Universe....that sort of thing).

Jersey Girl is outside of all this. I heard it was pretty good, but all that Bennifer bullshit did it in....not to mention Gigli.

The recent "Team America" has several SW references in it.
By the way, the old Kenner playset of Raider's "Well of Souls" has not only Artoo and Threepio in the heiroglyphics, but Vader as well!

pretty sure Men in Black has one. When Agent K is saying his line about how there is always some threat to the galaxy one of the threats he mentions is a Correllian Death Ray.

its on tv right now and im 99% sure thats what he said.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. They dress up in armor and get these swords and pretend to have a lightsaber fight, and they say a few lines like "I'm Darth Ted!" and "I am your father!"

I know there was an episode of Animaniacs that made fun of Star Wars.

That 70's Show. One of the guy characters in the show likes Star Wars. He was quizzing his dad on Star Wars characters using his collection of action figures. I just saw it recently, but it might have been a re-run, I don't really watch the show.

Also, isn't the kid from The OC always talking about Star Wars and comic books? At least that's the justification my girlfriend uses to try and get me to watch that show.

Scream 2:
- "Oh please! By definition alone, sequels are inferior films!"
- "How about Empire Strikes Back. Improved graphics. Better storyline."
- "Not a sequel, part of a trilogy, completely planned."

Scream 3:
During Randy's taped message to Sydney, Dewey and Gale, he refers to the Star Wars trilogy. Carrie Fisher has a cameo in the movie as Bianca, the studio archive keeper.
