Video Games - a general discussion thread — Page 357

Hey all,

After a decade plus of not keeping up with video games, I bought a used PS4 on a whim when I went to pick up my comics yesterday. I grabbed Battlefront when I got the thing because Star Wars, but I’m looking to snag another game or two on my way home from work tonight to start filling out my library (everything I’m interested in seems to cost a hell of a lot more on Sony’s app store than a physical copy would, so I’m shooting for stuff I can easily find at Target or Best Buy). I’ve got the BioShock trilogy, which I used to noodle around with on my college roommate’s PS3, on order at Amazon, but it’s not expected to ship for at least a month. I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for immersive adventure games and/or shooters, maybe something a little older so it won’t be that expensive. I tend to skew scifi/fantasy with these things; I don’t at all care for the Modern Warfare flavor of shooter, but I can also get into something historical like Battlefield 1 (which I’m going to wait for the price to come down on before getting). Right now I’m leaning toward Skyrim, but I’m open to suggestion.

There are actually a few older PS2 Star Wars titles available in the PS Store that can be played on the PS4. Been a while since I looked but I believe they have Star Wars Bounty Hunter, Racer’s Revenge and Jedi Starfighter. Of those, I highly recommend Bounty Hunter!

I remember Bounty Hunter well, I played it on GameCube when it came out. I’ll definitely be revisiting it at some point.

Some PS4 games I’ve enjoyed:

  • The Last of Us
  • Alien Isolation
  • Uncharted (all the four games)
  • The Last Guardian
  • Prey

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I picked up The Last Guardian, Skyrim, and Battlefield 1 yesterday. I’m definitely going to savor The Last Guardian; Shadow of the Colossus was one of my favorites from back in the day and I want this to last a while. I was also absolutely delighted to find that Battlefield 1 has a Lawrence of Arabia campaign.

A group of people have created ‘Mega Maker’ game for the PC. You can now design your very own Megaman levels. It works like Mario Maker, where you can upload/download levels from the community. People have already made Kaizo style levels.

Speaking of such things, there’s been a flash sequel to the mega man a series in development for a while now that looks to have gone back to the super Nintendo roots. Can’t wait for it to be released.

Cool, sounds interesting.

Okay, I’ve played plenty of Breath of the Wild by now and…wait for it… I can’t say it’s my favorite Zelda game.

It’s sooo different from the other games. I know people who complain about previous 3D Zeldas being too formulaic, but because this Zelda game so different in style, scope, and difficulty, et al., that comparing Breath of the Wild to Twilight Princess or Wind Waker is almost completely unfair. It’s almost a completely different genre of game.

I’ve been playing this game for several dozen hours now. I don’t recall how many. So much so that I’m addicted to it.

I love this game. It’s fantastic. But the catch is I’ve played several other open world games before, and so certain aspects feel derivative. Yes, the towers in BOTW are better than those in Assassin’s Creed. Yes, the open world action swordplay is better than in Shadow of Mordor. Yes, this game takes solid gamplay mechanics, improves them, adds fantastic story and dialogue, and rolls them into one amazing experience. But sometimes I’m playing the game and I feel like I’ve done these things in other games, even though this does it better.

This is in contrast to other Zelda games, where no one else does it quite like Zelda. If any other game copies Zelda gameplay, it’s them copying it–not it copying them. It’s as though Zelda basically wrote the book on action adventure games. But Breath of the Wild is largely consolidating and improving on existing mechanics from other properties. There are movies that I love that do this–like Star Wars. I love Star Wars. But I haven’t seen the films and serials from which it was derived, and so I don’t compare it to them.

So that’s why I’m perplexed about where Breath of the Wild sits on my personal list of favorite Zelda games. It’s wonderful, but it’s derivative; while the other 3D games are original but formulaic. And I don’t mind the formula because it just works.

Sure looks that way. I wonder what sucker gave him $5.

By the way, that game is taking all of my free time right now, so I’m going to start a GoFundMe so I can quit my job and spend more time on my edit.

Yeah I see local people on my own Facebook page sharing their own gofundmes for medical expenses all the time. Probably shouldn’t take this discussion further in this thread though.

Been waiting till I can pick u a Switch to get Breath of the Wild… Well, that’s just not gonna happen anytime soon, so I just ordered it for the Wii U.
It’s arriving Monday and I’m pretty damn excited.

Can you not order one through GameStop? I wasn’t able to find one locally available when I went shopping around for it, but my local GameStop did have Switches available to order and have it shipped to me.

Is Star Trek Online fun? I’m a huge Trek fan and it’s the only Trek game I’m aware of that people have good things to say about.

I didn’t get into it, but you can’t argue with free. You can at least give it a shot.

I can argue with anything.

In this specific case, time = money so nothing is free.

Availability isn’t the issue. It’s a 400$ console (!) with only one game that I wanna play and no other desirable use. After seeing that the only real difference between the two versions of BOTW is the draw distance, getting the U version was a no-brainer.
By the time the Switch has an exclusive Zelda title, I’ll be able to buy a used Switch for a low price.

I got to start LOZ:BOTW today. I really love it so far.

I always stay a generation behind on game consoles for cost. I’ve only had my wiiu less than a year and I love it. I’ve only even played two games for it so far tho, the twilight princess remake and super Mario 3d world. Have loved both. But I’ve played alot of wii and GameCube (via nintendont) games on it and I just enjoy it. The only thing I really don’t like is that the only surround it offers is 5.1 lpcm surround which my receiver can’t handle. I wish it at least offer dolby surround/pro logic surround line the regular wii did, but for some reason it doesn’t and just putting it to stereo doesn’t give any surround effects besides just ambiance that pro logic pipes back there naturally. I mean even the Nintendo 64 had games with dolby surround (both Zelda titles sound beautiful on it) but with the wiiu you’re stuck with simple stereo unless your receiver takes lpcm 5.1.

The Nintendo Switch is the first early-adopter console purchase I’ve made in a LONG time (if July is “early adopter” since it was released in March). I’ve had several other consoles, but they were either purchased well into the life of the console or else bought second-hand (or both). The last console I bought at or near launch was the Sega Dreamcast.

I did not have a Wii U. I would only have considered buying one if it had an exclusive Zelda and/or Metroid title.

Twilight princess (and wind waker for that matter) in hd are wonderful though, at least for me.
