Without providing you’re opinion on kubricks films that post means nothing. I know people that love and people that hate them.

For a DC guy like myself, admitting that any Marvel movie is a good movie is a pretty big deal…comic fans tend to be fairly stubborn when it comes to their publisher of choice. Having said that, just because the movie doesn’t hold up that well for me shouldn’t deter anyone else from esteeming it highly.

Spider-man 2 tonight, the best of the bunch in my opinion; we’ll see if the kiddos give it their seal of approval.

Uncle Ben’s death scene is Kubrick level compared to the same scene in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Everything about the original Spider-Man is Kubrick-level* compared to any scene from The Amazing Spider-Man.

*Note that I don’t even like most of Kubrick’s work, but I’d still watch any of his movies over Skater-Emo Spidey vs. Killer Croc with a Tail.

“Predestination” (2013)

I’ve never heard of The Spierig Brothers but they wrote, scored and directed this wonderful film which until last night I never knew existed. If a sci-fi-drama-mystery-noir (in colour) sounds like your sort of thing and you haven’t seen this gem already then drop what you’re doing and watch it immediately. I guarantee* you will thank yourself afterwards.

Everything, absolutely everything, is superb. Ethan Hawke’s performance is deliberately low-key (you’ll see why) and Sarah
Snook (who looks like Jodie Foster and Leonardo Dicaprio’s love child most of the time) acts with so much skill and subtlety she should win an award every year regardless of whether she’s been in anything else.

Sci-Fi. Time travel. A vicious twist in the tale. I can’t say more without spoiling it. Don’t watch the trailer, just watch the movie (and tell your friends to do the same.)

I give it 5 violin cases out of 5 because it’s a masterpiece of its genre.

*guarantee void in Tennessee.

Taken (2008)

If I had watched this twenty years ago I’d give it an 8 or 9 out of 10. But I’ve seen this movie too many times now. The first half is pretty interesting but eventually it just devolves into unbeatable dude punching and shooting bad guys.

6.5/10

Despicable Me 3 (2017) - 80’s references = a win for me!

Captain America: Civil War (2016) - In preparation for Spider-man: Homecoming

Spider-man: Homecoming (2017) - A great Spider-man movie, after the amazing fiasco in Sony’s reboot.

La Grand Illusion (1937) – Pretty great. Not perfect, but very enjoyable, essentially inventing a genre while presenting some interesting ideas far ahead of their time.

Spider-man 2 with the kiddos, still the best of the original bunch. Some questions and plot oddities popped up, like how did Doc Ock know where Peter and Mary Jane were meeting? or Why did Ock’s new limbs care if he remade his fusion reactor? But overall, a quality entry that holds up a bit better than the first installment, even with Ock’s ‘Nooooooooo!!!’. My girls felt that Peter was too much of a push over, but I just chalk that up to his geeky charm. My main issue with the film series is the amount of time it took for Peter and M.J. to finally get together. But this type of love story from afar is hardly new, and unfortunately has popped up in The Flash and Arrow TV series. Super dudes just gotta get better at keeping secrets from the evil dudes.

Spider-man 3…kids bailed at about the 52 minute mark, but I am still hanging in there. So much potential…sigh…

John Wick Point Blank fan edit in black and white. A must see if possible. One of the best fan edits I have been fortunate enough to see; and the black and white is beautifully done.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017)

What a fun movie. There was just about the right amount of everything and it fits right into the greater MCU as if it was all planned from the start - which it most definitely was not! How do Marvel make such different movies simultaneously fit together, stand apart and be connected and not only be coherent but entertaining?

Casting Jennifer Connolly, the real-life-wife of Paul Bettany, as the voice of the suit was a genius move.

A superb restartification for Spidey and I’m eager to see what’s next.

Okay, I’m fangirling and this might change on the next viewing but I can’t help myself - I give it 5 Lego Death Stars out of 5.

But where was Uncle Ben though? (Answer: He’s at home, cooking his rice.)

Finished Spidey 3 today, without the kids and actually I was kinda surprised; with a capable editor, I think you could almost make a good movie out of it–minus the dance moves and Peter’s swag. Anybody ever watched the Editors Cut?

It’s not perfect but I really enjoyed the No Sandman Edition. Without that, all other plot lines came together much better, and the reworked motives for Peter’s embrace of his inner darkness was much more interesting to me.

I barely remember anything from the Sam Raimi Spiderman films, but I remember thinking they were all three about equal in terms of entertainment value.

I only saw part 3 once, in the theater and was pretty pissed at the time, but like I said, it does have potential to be a decent film in the right hands.

Baby Driver…B-A-B-Y? Yup…another quality Edgar Wright effort; makes me want to perpetrate some moving violations, vehicularlly speaking of course.

How much of the MCU must one view before watching Homecoming? I’ve only seen Iron Man, Iron Man 3 and The Avengers.

Probably Captain America:Civil War would be the way to go, which introduces the Tony/Peter dynamic. We are watching the old ones to try an kill some summer time hours while the kids are on vacation and we are waiting for Homecoming…it is a week late in Poland.

Civil War’s really the only one you need to see to understand it (though the MCU movies you need to see to understand Civil War is quite a list…).

You can jump right into Homecoming with the films you have seen. There’ll be some vague references to events outside of it but they don’t affect the plot. If, however, you do want to start with Spider-man’s first appearance. I would highly recommend watching the Captain America trilogy. Some find the first film a little too cheesy (I loved it) but it sets the foundation for Winter Soldier and Civil War which are entirely different beasts and some of the best films in the MCU.

The fact that you would have to have seen a captain America film to fully understand a Spider-Man movie is fucking ridiculous.

As I said, you don’t. The film stands on its own well. They recap his appearance in Civil War at the beginning of Homecoming very well and in quite a fun way.

As long as it’s not 60’s Batman type cheese I can handle it. Also, seeing something so different than what I’m used to can give me a new perspective on Superhero flicks and I’m going to watch it for that reason alone. The only thing that sucks is that I’m running through Breaking Bad again and that’s taking up most of my time outside of work so this is someting I’m going to have to push aside for the time being.

Full Metal Jacket

Probably my favorite Vietnam War movie thus far. But of course it is. It’s a Kubrick.
