Quick mockup of some of this, what it might look like

Flows way more natural IMO. The only jarring thing now is that you have a wide shot of the damaged oscillator followed by a short cockpit shot followed by essentially the same wide shot again.

Yeah, that oscillator shot is too short, so I did some trickery with lipsync, but it’s still jarring to have that shot

I’d slow down the oscillator shot and remove the pilot shot, just keep his voice.

That’s all I’m gonna be able to do today, but I’m happy with this new take on the X-wing scene.
I’m not optimistic for the Snoke and friends scene, so I invite anyone who is capable to try to weave together something. I wasn’t able to get it sounding anything but awful! But, I might just be out of my element due to being tired at this point; will try again later.

The Ackbar lipsync really is a problem in that version. Maybe it can be fixed by Neverar’s suggestion, otherwise it might be better not to reverse the shot.

The rest of the scene works really well though.

An introduction for Ackbar could maybe make it even better. Something like “All ships…” from ROTJ like in Neverar’s first mockup.

I still think Ackbar’s, and I can’t put enough quotes around what follows, “lip sync” works better without reversing that shot.

It kind of bugs me that it’s the same reaction shot of the female pilot that was used in the firing sequence. Also, I think the Poe looking out the side window shot would work better after Ackbar, though it might be too short.

The reversed shot feels better, the turn to camera makes sense. Actually I think the “lip sync” for the line works well in this case, the odd thing is that his mouth moves a bit before the line. And the pause before he speaks feels like it’s a bit too long, half a second maybe. I feel like it breaks up the rhythm of the conversation, but it’s not a huge problem.

Anyway, the mouth movement before the line could be removed by inserting a still image of his closed mouth on top of the video, since he keeps his head pretty still during that part. I could do that.

Anyone have access to halfway decent and/or isolated 3PO and BB8 gyro/motor sound effects?

I just came across this video, there’s a lot of motor sounds here that could be extracted:

Here too:

And here’s a small pack of C-3PO sounds:

Thanks, Ridley. I’ve got some BB8 motor sounds at present, but we’ll see if these can’t make it better. I think it works well without any 3PO sounds, but I will see what can be done!

Also, minor note: the female pilot reaction shot during the firing sequence has been replaced with a now unused shot of Poe craning his neck to look at something off to one side.

And I invite anyone to try their hand at a scene between Snoke and Hux to depict them planning to rearm and target the Resistance base. I’m afraid my methods yield YouTube Poop levels of sentence mixing. 😛

The version where Hux says ‘The Resistance…it is wreckage’ was the result of taking it into Audacity and manipulating the pitch. It’s a weird sentence structure but it’s the best I can think of using Hux’s limited lines. The problem is that he almost never says anything in the past tense, always ‘we’ll soon have it’, ‘We will destroy the government that supports’, etc. Perhaps this is something that will have to wait until V3 of this project, after The Last Jedi gives us more to work with.

Most of the problems you observe have been addressed in version 2 😃

There is the problem of the Hosnian System falling off the map before it is destroyed, but any mention of it after the briefing scene would have to be completely manufactured. I’ve been thinking about how to make them into a sympathetic party, and the best I can think of is building a scene during the assault with various shots in the Resistance base:

Taslin Brance staring at a computer screen (seen in the deleted scenes)
"General, are you seeing this?"
Newly recorded dialogue of a Republic official saying something like "You have our full financial support, but it will take some time to scramble any ships to help you"
Voice of C-3PO (over Leia looking concerned): “Oh my, without the Republic Fleet we’re doomed!”

What happened to this idea? Or generally speaking to any of the ideas that try to give a hint of why the Republic doesn’t help the Resistance in the battle? I kinda lost track of where these went.

They haven’t been implemented (yet?).

Part of why I tried to extend the Starkiller firing to fit the full cue was in an attempt to make room for a government transmission offering belated assistance. Of course that idea would use some different shots, but in either case the Resistance scene would need to be manufactured. After doing the basic montage, people seemed to like that on its own so I didn’t go further in the idea of the transmission.

Perhaps the transmission could be added by removing the pilot reactions and instead inserting the ‘are you seeing this’ line. I just really like the wordless nature of the montage as it is, and the transmission would have to be quite good to be worth it.

But don’t let that stop anyone from trying this out - the attitude of the Republic is still the most problematic aspect of this edit in my mind, and something should be done to make it more helpful to the Resistance.

Yes, the two biggest missing scenes are Leia trying to warn the Republic during their assault, and the First Order preparing to rearm and target the Resistance base afterward.

Isn’t the edited Snoke and Hux scene “And now… the Republic” going to be implemented in restructured v2 ?

A real attempt at bringing ‘all craft’ in line with the rest of the dialogue:

I figured taking out all the dialogue of the other pilot helps to simplify the scene, and if we can make the Snoke scene fit after the Oscillator breach this scene will fit right back in where it used to be.

I would re-add the “Looks like our friends got in.” line, but otherwise that’s pretty good.
The two Ackbar lines still sound slightly different, but it’s very close by now.

It’s really good!

The only issue I sense is with the music cutting from the space battle to Finn and Rey, since there are two similar chords right next to each other. Even though the music overlaying the distant shot of the Oscillator is correct, it feels off in this short scene and the transition just makes it worse. Would it work to use the music from the Ackbar shot and simply extend that through the rest of the scene? The ‘weapon will fire in 2 minutes’ dialogue is of similar length to what replaces it.
