I can tell you as a fan that doesn’t like the prequels, but rather as a fan that loves the prequels, I hate it when people give me hyperbolic, pre-packaged criticisms of the films that address a tiny speck of “sand”-sized flaw in one of the most imaginative series to be released from 1999-2005. As films of their day, they’re brilliant, fun, and entirely unique. I can think of another franchise or two from the era that are often heralded as “great movies” but I sincerely don’t think they hold up or look as good or timeless as the last three films George Lucas directed.

Q) When Did The Star Wars Prequels Become Cool?
A) Never.

It’s a very stupid article. It basically talks about how Millennials love the prequels and how the previous generation is blinded by their hate for the prequels.

Also, this filled my screen while reading the article:

which did not do any favors for me.

Wait, people are mad at a WatchMojo video? WatchMojo, who churns out deliberately bland, innocuous content like an assembly line just for clicks and ad revenue? Lol!

I think that describes Reddit right there.

Q) When Did The Star Wars Prequels Become Cool?

A) To process the harsh events/problems of the actual real-world, worried people tend to need a higher dose of escapism in these days. As a result of this, former logical & comprehensible criticism of weak movies, is subliminal anulled so that even those movies can contribute to the growing maelstrom of escapism.

Many prequel characters are seen at the theme parks. Watto has a store named for him in Orlando. But you don’t see Mr. Binks anywhere.

I rest my case.

I grew up with the prequels. I like them. Are they great, no. Are they the best movies of all time, not by a long shot. But they were mine. I’ve grown up with a generation above me that hates something that I love so passionately that growing up I was inclined to believe them. But as I got older my love for my childhood consisted of the horrible lines in TPM and the ridiculous fight from AOTC.

I understand from a completely objective viewpoint that the prequels pail in comparison to the OT, especially the UOT. But the thing is I grew up with those too. I had the UOT on VHS and watched them as often as I was able. I spent hours and hours pouring over the OT and memorizing its lines and complexities. The OT is vastly superior to the PT. But that’s not what this is about…

I’m beginning to see that there are a generation like me who just don’t like it when the things we love are bashed upon. That’s why it took me so long to join this forum. I have great respect for the OT and I love them to death. I’ve created my Despecialized boxset by hand (Based on ron’s). I’ve participated in the hype for revisited. I’ve watched some of Hal 9000’s prequel edits. I get it.

But… I like Jar Jar, he’s stupid but I like him. Anakin duel wielding was dumb and looked terrible, but I used to draw that seen as a child. Anakin’s turn to the dark side was too fast, but it still made me feel terrible loss and pain.

I want to be a part of this forum more, I love the OT, and I wish that they would come back. I love the way the OT was made with the models and the rubber suits and the lived in look. I remember the watching from Star Wars to Jedi, I remember the Empire of Dreams. I remember the original Star Wars toys from 78 that my friend had. The nostalgia is real. Yet it feels like somehow my nostalgia for the PT is not respected the same way as your nostalgia for the OT. And if I’m honest, it sometimes turns me off to being apart of this community that was done so much for Star Wars.

I hope this made sense, I tried to be sensible. No one in their right mind can say the PT is better than the OT. But honestly, there are people like me who are just so tired of getting hated on just for loving those movies.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I grew up with the PT, I was even introduced to SW via TPM in 1999, however as an adult I really can’t stand them. I find them nostalgic, yes, but it does in no way stop me from criticising or disliking them.

I’m actually quite surprised at how many people my age defend the PT online nowadays, as everyone I know personally that’s my age more-or-less share my opinion. Heck, even friends of mine that enjoy silly films like the Transformers films will rip into the PT the second they’re mentioned.

I suspect that a lot of it is just people being loud on the internet, I don’t think it’s too common an attitude. I also think that a lot of people, like dgraham414 suggested, are merely being defensive. It’s not like OT fans are immune to hyperbole.

If you like the prequels, that’s cool. It can be a little awkward on a site devoted to the original films, but no worse than being in a sports bar devoted to the team you’re not pulling for.
There are parts of Episode III that I enjoy. I saw the darn thing three times in theaters. 😉

There have to be some prequel fans who liked the original theatrical versions who feel our pain these days.

I’m actually watching TPM right now and I assure you, it’s still uncool. I regret paying 50 cents for this tape.

I’m livetweeting the experience though, if anyone cares.

I just finished watching a fanedit of EP2 and the non-edited parts are dreadful.

I have attemped to watch quite a few PT edits and as soon as I hear Jar Jar, it’s over. With his original dialog and voice, they are unwatchable for me.

The millennials who grew up on crap like Twilight and Harry Potter moved into other fandoms. Since they are easy to please the creators have little incentive to make good stuff when they can half ass any old garbage and make the bucks. They ruined Doctor Who and they tried to ruin Star Wars.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Why ? Without the OT there can be no PT (and most PT fans I know are just SW fans, they love every single movie… but they still think the OT to be superior 😃).

(and the most interesting subforum of this site is the one devoted to fanedits, especially PT fanedits)
