Many congratulations on getting the Wampa mouth working Ady. I never really doubted that you would, as you have repeatedly proven your great skill and supreme dedication to this project. The results already look excellent, and I can’t wait to see this in action in the final edit. Thank you for sharing this latest update and of course, thank you a thousand times over for creating and sharing these edits in the first place. You are as generous as you are talented!

Excellent job on the wampa Ady!

I think it looks brilliant spot on really but… not trolling at all (no pun intended) Where are his Ears?

Is it that we can’t see them in that video?

It is actually one of the reasons why the special edition Wampa looks wrong.

Also just looking at the Horns on the hand puppet and at your puppet the bottom edge of the horns look like it rests on the middle axis of the mouth. And I don’t know if that is angled down or dropped in height? Because it’s really hard to see them on the Hand Puppet.

They also are not Jet Black but like a white / grey Tusk, But looking at the original hand puppet some more it looks like he had one tusk higher than the other one. wonky tusks if you like. Definitely deformed the tusk on the left is a bit higher up.

Also of note because if that horn on the right which is lower down is correct in that photo above that means the shot of the Wampa hand puppet in the film is perhaps flipped? as in the film the lower protruding horn is on the left. Just saying…

I’m imagining the answer is that since all the face shots are being replaced, that this is what the Revisited Wampa looks like. It doesn’t have ears or wonky tusks.

yeah I figured to get the face looking so spot on that Ady would not forget the ears. So interesting the original Hand puppet is going and we will have a new type of Hybrid in revisited?

I honestly do think the pointy ears go very well with the big fat nose though from the original design and gives it an over the top yet still organic feel.

It is much more Fantasy styled than the Special edition. Just a comparison between the Hand puppet and this new Wampa that was all really. I don’t mind if it is different but I thought you were trying to match it precisely to the Hand puppet?

No, the plan was to create one with the features Ady likes and replace all the shots.

RRRROOOOAAAARRRR!!!

Actually joking aside here but animals always try to make themselves appear bigger when on the attack so take note of the arms being outstretched so as to be more intimidating.

He has ears. I just didn’t make them like the pointed cats ears in the original. I’m not going for an exact match of the original.

The video was shot at a low angle, not just to mimic the first shot of the wampa, but also because its on the mannequin torso which, when on the workbench, its about a foot or two taller than me. . But you can’t see his ears in the low angle shot in the original either.

Thanks for giving us this latest preview adywan, and it’s great to see your WAMPA’s jaw mechanics in action!

I was curious about a few unanswered things back in this post from page 1342 - www.originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1048943/ , but I see from doubleofive’s comments that you’re actually going to replace the original puppet shot too! (I’ve included the shots above for the sake of easy reference for everyone)

I didn’t realise you were intending to do away with the great opening shot of the puppet, with it’s open-wide roar…and just assumed you were trying to get a closer approximation of it to replace the inferior-looking ‘cave’ shot of it lunging towards Luke…so that’s interesting news.

I always thought that original first reveal was terrific, and hopefully your new shot can give it equal justice.

But I still have several queries that your latest clip throws up -

  1. Before you film it, will you be trying to brush the hair on your version’s head in a manner similar to the tousled, mussed-up look of the original one? - I know it can’t be exact, but the original puppet looked excellent in that regard.

  2. And are you still intending to heavily coat the hair with ‘icicles’ like the original has? - that’s one of the best details about that original puppet, I reckon.

  3. And are you going to ‘dirty down’/add a little ‘dried blood’ under it’s bottom lip to your version, as seen in the top 2 shots above? - again, I think that’s a nice additional detail there.

And this is just an additional observation concerning your wampa’s HORNS - seeing as it seems you’re going to replace the puppet which had it’s horns mostly covered in hair, I was kinda hoping that your new ones were going to look a little bigger and more ‘gnarly’ than they currently are.

Personally, I always liked the ‘lop-sided’ ears of the original puppet, and the fact that they’re missing in your clip kinda makes it look like your horns are ‘ears’. Not quite, but almost, if you see what I mean. If you are indeed excluding ‘ears’ on your version altogether (like the SE ‘additional scene’ version does), then fair enough…but I just think that your new horns would look even better if they looked a bit larger and more prominent. And I would have loved to have seen them a little more ‘gnarly’-looking overall, with ‘chunkier’ segments, and with the end of one horn ‘broken off’ like the original has.

By ‘gnarly’-looking, I mean something more akin to how the horns on Luke’s tauntaun appear here -

To be honest, I was always a fan of the size of horns in relation to the wampa’s head…as seen in the original KENNER toy figure, as seen in this article - www.starwars.com/news/wampa-collecting-hoths-horrible-monsters

Either way, I know that your final filmed shots of the wampa are bound to be impressive-looking. Great work!

*(EDIT: Heh, I see the ‘ears’ issue was addressed while I typed all this out!) 😃 - but just to confirm that they ARE briefly seen during the original shot, as can be just made out above in my 3rd pic down.

SUGGESTION

Film a 15 minute side story about two wampas that meet and fall in love and have children. But when the Rebel alliance lands on the planet, the ships accidentally cause ice fragments to impale and kill the little ones, and now we have a better understanding for the motive for them attacking Luke on the Taun-Taun and for why they always seem so angry.

Finally, when the last Rebel ship (the Falcon?) leaves Hoth… show the mom and dad, looking up at the sky with a single tear falling from their eye.

Yeah, the special edition Wampa was one of the few changes I actually really liked. I just wish they would’ve replaced the really bad hand puppet, that looks more like it’s running to hug Luke, instead of eat him. It reminded me of the original Alien, when it’s the full body shot of the alien, and it opens it’s arms to hug:
Hugs
I swear, George replaced good effects, and left the stuff that was even bad when it was new. I’ll never understand that.

^ Are you referring to the first shot we get of the wampa? If so, I completely disagree on both counts. The Wampa puppet and that shot of the alien are both awesome.

Sounds more like he’s talking about the shot actually in the cave.

Yeah, right when Luke grabs the saber, and you see the wampa coming to get a hug. I actually love the look of the wampa that originally attacks Luke.

Ah, yes, I agree that wampa’s pretty bad. It looks like something you’d get from cross breeding the Royale kitten with Fizzgig from The Dark Crystal. It’ll be nice to have a consistent look for the creature in ESB:R.

I like Ady’s a lot. The right lighting, and made consistent, it’s going to be great. Aside from that, it’s the only thing in ESB I was ever bothered by, and that was a minor nitpick.

Well if the wampa don’t work out you could replace it with a xenomorph.
And then have eggs about hatch a face hugger, he gets his lightSaber out just in time to cut a face hugger in half.
Yesssssss… it’s so almost too perfecsst…

Plenty of K Y Jelly either way!

Yes, but you can’t see it under all that fur.

I would look at the puppet and try and get as close to that as possible, like matting the fur down and making it look frozen (hairspray maybe) in some areas.

It is just a movie, maybe we all are taking this a little too serious, I think he did an outstanding job with everything he’s done so far.

It would be cool to see somebody complete a suit for a 8 foot man with 12 inch heel shoes, that would make him 9 feet tall. Get a few fans with some Hoth Rebel clothing and gear, and grab a camera and shoot something with the Wampa chasing them. All you do is add the special effects, some NEW shots of C-3PO and R2-D2, all you need are their costumes, as well as snowtroopers, stormtroopers and Vader.

Then, you can create something that was realized, but ultimately discarded due to it looking too fake, budget restraints and poor animation technology. You have the head of the Wampa now. Somebody make a fan film. I would do it myself, but, as we all know, it costs money, lots of money. I do know how I would shoot the film, and I would make the Wampa scary as hell too.

I’m sorry, but I would love to see a new scene with the Wampa. I know it will never happen, but, I get excited about this kind of thing. I know it can be done. This would be awesome to see.
