Wonder Woman (2017)- Who would have suspected that DC would finally get it right with their fourth movie? Great stuff here - a charismatic leading lady, a colorful supporting cast, a touching love story, and a well-developed screenplay with gasp clear structure and actual set-ups and pay-offs despite the occasional cringey dialogue.

It was also not to see a superhero film, which isn’t Disney-fied (read: everyone joking all the time, faceless bad guys, endless actions, no real developed dialogue scenes, and characters with love interests but no sexuality). Here’s a movie instead in the tradition of Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films, Iron Man, Batman Begins, Logan, and, perhaps most pertinently, Superman '78.

I think it’s the best superhero film in recent memory and keep in mind, I walked in expecting that I’d probably hate it. Go check it out (for the record, my critique of this being an excellent movie has nothing to do with it ALSO being the first female superhero film, directed by a female).

Double feature? 😋

Double feature of movie titles starting with “Sha”.

why not match all the common letters? ^ fixed

Oops, missed that. Or, better yet, Double feature of movie titles starting with a “shau/w sound”.

Absolutely good to hear! I hope I’ll get to see it this weekend.

I saw Alien: Covenant, which was much better than I was expecting. While it definitely has some idiot plot elements, it does a great job with its atmosphere. All of my complaints are with the story decisions made; the film-making was rather excellent.

Also, just a heads up, The Godfather will be in theaters in the USA on Sunday and Wednesday for its 45th anniversary. I’m sure it will be the Coppola Restoration master, and I’m excited to see the film on the big screen for my first time.

Passengers (2016)

A really enjoyable two-thirds of a movie, until all the predictable conflicts begin and the movie devolves into a real disappointment. Nice to look at though.

The FBI Story (1959) 3/5
I watched this for Jimmy Stewart, but got weird quasi-documentary quasi-propaganda instead. It would have been better suited for TV, and I wasn’t surprised to learn it was a fairly successful TV show later on.

I think I’ve only seen that movie once, in the theater. I agree with what you said. I too thought it was a good movie, back then.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

I really liked the first half of the film, give or take twenty minutes. Then Lovecraftian beasties from beyond the universe must’ve broke through and started eating reality, 'cause this movie just went batshit insane, and not in a good way. On the lighter side of things, I haven’t read the book(s) this is based on; if I had, I’d probably have come away hating this movie rather than just bewildered by it.

Wonder Woman - 7.5 out of 10

I probably never would have seen this but heard good early Impressions and my brother-in-law had an extra ticket today. I was pleasantly surprised by it. There are too many superhero movies these days but this one was enjoyable.

Wonder Woman

All superhero movies are cancelled. All the hero-movie-universe movie stuff was created to bring this movie, they no longer need to exist, this will never be topped by Marvel Studios or DC or anyone. This is second only to Superman (1978) in terms of hero-comic movies. I love this movie.

I swore I’d never touch anything of the DCEU with a 100-kilometre-long pole, and here you guys are, making me consider reneging on that oath.

Damn you all. Damn you all to hell.

Doctor Strange (2016)

CONS

  • Too much humour in unnecessary places. Strange has never been a humourous superhero; I don’t see why so many gags and slapslick had be incorporated into the plot.
  • Too much Kung Fu.
  • Not enough emphasis placed on Strange being an uncaring asshole prior to his accident.
  • Dormammu’s atrocious design. Give me the featureless, flaming head from the comics any day.
  • The eye makeup of Hannibal & co. It didn’t make them look creepy or sinister; it make them look like a troupe of emos with running mascara.
  • Tilda Swinton.

PROS

  • Everything else.

Trust me, I was the same way, but my mom wanted to see it because she grew up with the old TV show, so the whole family went with her.

I’m probably still going to skip the JL movie though, and any other DCEU movie without Patty Jenkins’ name on it 😛

Count me in as yet another, overall satisfied, viewer of Wonder Woman!

THIS is how the DC line up of movies should had been, as we lead up to Justice League. I really felt that there was an emotional core to this film not really ever expressed in Man of Steel or Batman vs Superman. God, I really never bought the chemistry between Superman and Louis here at all; it was more like, “Hey this is Superman, and this Louis. Remember how they’re supposed to be together? Well, they just are!” In Wonder Woman, I was WAY more invested in the chemistry between Diana and Steve here. They’re talking to each other, working together, FIGHTING together, or DOING WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE!
Was this film flawless? No, not really. It could do less with some annoying slow-mo scenes (just let the scene play out in real time for crying out loud), or how underwhelming certain villains were (the fight at the end is rather cheesy, but I’ll take it over the mess in Man of Steel where CITY DESTRUCTION porn is everywhere or in BvS where it’s CITY DESTRUCTION AND BIG CGI MONSTER FIGHT). But what saves this movie, is that emotional draw to it. I was so worried that Wonder Woman would be too perfect and that nothing really horrible would happen to her here, but I’m pleased to say that there was enough that happens where you can see the shift in character development take form. It isn’t super AMAZING, but it’s sufficient to where there was investment in the character.

7/10.

Yeah, all things considered, I’m not really psyched for Justice League either. Gleaning from the trailers, it looks like more or less the same of what we’ve seen in Man of Steel or Batman vs Superman; just your typical and goofy action popcorn flick. Wonder Woman works so well because it’s a lot more personal and doesn’t rely on symbols to sell the heroes; the actions and values of Wonder Woman were far more convincing to me without it feeling ham-fisted with “THIS IS OUR SAVIOR CAUSE HE HAS A HOPE SYMBOL” schlock.

Wonder Woman (2017):

I can’t wait for the inevitable complaints about this somehow being “feminist propaganda” like what happened to TFA. Overall, it was good enough for me, but I could’ve done without the whole Wonder Woman vs British-guy-who-builds-his-own-armour-out-of-runway-wreckage fight scene at the end (I’m assuming that’s some DC villain from the comics I haven’t heard of). I’m just goddamn tired of these superhero movies ending with a blue laser being fired.

The Thing (1982):

Hard to believe this actually received so many negative reviews at the time.

I haven’t liked a lot of the recent DC hero movies, but I’ll probably watch the Wonder Woman movie.
